4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to metal making
I found Metallurgy Fundamentals to be an excellent resource for myself. While not overly technical it covers the basic principles and theory of metal making in clear and straightforward language. I recommend it for persons in drafting, quality, design, or purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Introduction to Metallurgy
This book is a nice introduction to the subject of metallurgy. It's well written and clear.Although it's not an in depth treatement of the subject, it should be a good introductory text for the technologist.

2-0 out of 5 stars Look Elsewhere
Although it is difficult subject matter to address solely with the written word, sharpening skill can be transfered by the visual information provided while watching an experienced hand doing the work. This seems to have been the thesis of the people involved in the production of this tome."Still" pictures, however, do a poor job of relating the ways to control the edge angle (very important to sharpening) as the grinding proceeds, although pictures do reveal a well ground edge. While it is easy to see from the evidence presented here that the man in the pictures is indeed getting very sharp tools as a result of his efforts, the way to arrive at those results yourself is not well illuminated. This is when a few well chosen bits of verbage can make the critical difference in transfering the skill to the student.Written instructions are almost nonexsistent in this book.Overall, I would say that the wrong type of camera was used in this production; had a Video been made instead of a book (allowing for a running commentary, instead of sparse written instructions), I may well have been able to give more stars. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Hardly a shadow of the old Gun Gun Digest
Every year the new owners of Gun Digest put fewer and fewer articles in the book. 2007 seems to be the new low. Mostly it is now just a collection of canned catalog specs with many editing errors. After all, they don't have to pay anyone for that. The articles they do have are major boring. Nothing like the pre-2000 Gun Digest when Ken Warner was still the editor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gun Digest
This book is very informative. Information is easy to find on the subjects. Well worth the time to look it over.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Major Disappointment
As a very long-time GD reader, I have seen good issues and fair issues. This is the first issue that I would consider poor.Editorial content is weak to the extreme, and there is little of interest for the gun enthusiast beyond updates of what's new on the market. The first article is about the .400 Brown Whelan (Why should anyone care?) The second is about modification of a Ruger #1 to .32-40.This is a pure vanity piece, of no interest unless for some strange reason you want to do the same. The third article is entitled "The Automatic Question," which sort of covers the development of semi-automatic sporting arms, touching on the question of advantages over other types of arms over the years. It's only mildly interesting. The next is a long story about the Bowie Knife.Maybe I'm mistaken, but this is not the "Knife Digest."Following is a story about "Premium Bullet Performance."The conclusion is simply that they are all pretty good. Ho-Hum. Next is a long picture piece on engraved weapons.Fine if you like pretty pictures, otherwise, a yawner. Next is a very long article covering the last 60 years of revolver development. It's moderately interesting.I think you get the idea.Anyway, it seems the effort was more on publishing a lot of slick pages in full color than in offering interesting articles that used to be GD's stock in trade. If I could return my copy to Amazon for a refund, I would. My assessment is simple - donate the cost of a copy of GD 2006 to the NRA.Your money will be much better spent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best one yet!
Chuck Hellier has succeeded (with lots of help from other authors, I might add) in presenting the first updated handbook covering most all presently used methods of nondestructive testing (NDT).In one volume, he covers personnel certification issues and programs, discontinuities and their formation in metals, VT, PT, MT, RT, UT, ET, IR, and AE.As a person responsible for NDT training in a large company, I heartily welcome this addition to the body of knowledge for NDT.There are other works that cover theory in more detail, i.e. the ASNT handbook series, but this is the best publication to date giving a good introduction to NDT for aspiring technicians, engineers who might use, specify, or recommend NDT, or others interested in the field.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars All about the author, not much about welding
If you wanted to know all about what a wonderful guy the author is and want to see photos of everything he has ever worked on by all means buy this book. If you want good information and clearly written procedures and saftey practices buy another. Here's one example: In a side note unter TIG welding, the author says "Be very careful when welding magneseum, as it can catch fire and not be extinguished by nornal means. Consult Chapter 12 on saftey for more information"5-0 out of 5 stars Very good over all
Aside from little details, a very practical book. His coverage of aluminum brazing omitted the fact that it has been in use since before WW2, and on many military aircraft. His aluminum welding and brazing references tend to mix, and might create confusion in choosing fluxes and fillers. The dangerous cobalt blue lenses he mentions are 40 yrs old, and have been superceded by TM Technologies' TM2000 lenses 10 yrs ago. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Once again - Bill provides us great humor
I agree with Julian, while this particular book may be a bit more technical than his others, it is certainly worth the money and belongs on every Bryson fan's shelf. The insights into metal are as plentiful as the humor - especially when the author dives into the always hilarious topics of carburization and TTT diagrams.Side splitting!I never knew that working with metals could be so entertaining but I guess I should expect that from Bryson. He can make any topic a joy.1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time for metallurgical information
I am always surprized at the lack of information about the metal heat treating field. This book is definitely included in this.Although many of the processing techniques are good, some make me cringe and want to run for cover. The metallurgical information is remaniscent of Biringuccio or Agricola, both written in the 1500's.If you have enough metallurgical knowledge to know what is correct and what processing techniques are good, then you don't need this book.If you don't have enough knowledge to decipher this, then it is unreliable. On a lighter note, the other sections, not dealing with heat treating, seem good.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is not the same Bill Bryson as you are thinking of.
If you are looking for all the books Bryson has written, look up hisofficial web site or at random house publication's web site. ... Read more
