4-0 out of 5 stars VeryReadable Account
Its a nice little book on phonons and electrons, the chapters are well-laid out,the explanations are good, though some parts like the section on crystal momentum and the associated "normal"and "umklapp" process have been given rather perfunctory physical attributes. At any rate any one looking into transport phenomenon in solids and semiconductors should read it.Chapters 3&4 are the crucial ones of the book. And yes,it provides an excellent launching pad to delve into Ziman's "Electrons and Phonons",this book helped me understand much of Ziman's work as contained in his text and regarded as the one of the best ever on phonons and electrons. The work by Liang-Fu-Lou is certainly worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, excellent introduction to FEM
I was advised to use "Concepts and Applications of Finite Element Analysis, 4th Edition" by Robert D. Cook, David S. Malkus, Michael E. Plesha, Robert J. Witt as my text and reference during my graduate course in FEM. However, using the book left me with millions of unanswered questions-some very fundamental in nature. If you are a student who wants to understand the physical interpretations of the principles of the Finite Element Method beyond the mere mathematical manipulations, this book is for you. This is the most comprehensive text book on this subject. It is also very well written and can be assimilated with some effort. I can't recommend this book enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very good book
I learnt FE from this book. It is clear, coincise, full of well-worked examples. It covers almost all of the aspectes of FE programming. The book contains two educational codes, thought both are FORTRAN77 code, one can easily understand what's going on, so as to rewrite it in C or, say, FORTRAN90.4-0 out of 5 stars It is one of my best list.
Just completing his second and third chapter in FE formulation, you cannot deny Dr.Reddy's ingenius in FE. His solid background in Variational Calculus will enlight you the real nature of Finite Element approximation and bring you understand how can fomulate FE statement from BVP. Don't be bored in his mathematical written styles, because you could not understand FE in other ways.Absolutely, this book is one in my best list of FE textbook. His enlightment could not be found in a plenty of FE textbooks sold in your bookstore. Just read it!!! You may think like me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for learning and reference
As a student in materials science, this is one of best books I have ever read in materials science. The text is kept to a minimum and is easy to read. The figures are large and easy to understand, and the equations are all well explained.Just about every topic in friction and wear is given at least a cursory glance along with listings of more focused literature. This book should be read by all who deal with friction and wear as part of their work or education. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What I needed, when I needed it
I needed to get up to speed on DMA fast and I got what I needed. It didn't provide all the info I required for my specific application (submicron thin films) but it did provide a sound foundation for further investigation. This is truly what it claims to be, a practical introduction, many thanks to the author.

Let's face it, there are not many current Thermal Analysis textbooks for sale. The booksI've seen are too scrambled with no understanding at the end. 3-0 out of 5 stars Textbook
Not great, not written to teach, but with chunks of info stuck together.Way to many equations for anyone to use, but good discussion, diagrams and tables.May be better for theoretical/computational course than extending the basics of material science.I'll still learn a lot and have a good reference book, but there are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
I am a graduate student studying in the field of nanomaterials. I picked up this book upon advice from a professor and i've thumbed through it's pages on numerous occasions on which i've found exactly what I was looking for.I would not pick this book up if you're interested in problem sets, though. There are only a handful at the end of the chapter and some of them are extremely hard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book that combines a lot of information

I am a Grad starting some reaserch in ET field. This book saved me a lot from struggling to understanding basic conceptions, assumptions, models, and theories. It is written so decently and much easier to be understood comparedwith those original papers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tour de force!
When I was asked by JACS to write a review of this book, I expected agood concise overview of Prof. Nitzan's many contributions to the field of quantum chemical dynamics. When I received a >700 page text I knew I had my work as a reviewer cut out for me.This book is a milestone in the field. It lays out the foundations of quantum condensed phase dynamics: quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, liquid theory, condensed matter theory, stochastic processes, and spectroscopy, and then builds upon these to present a clear and precise picture of how chemical physicists

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad text, but...
The approach in this book is a lot different than that which engineering students will learn in their Physics classes. This book uses a lot of calculus once you get past chapter seven, so make sure you have taken at LEAST up to Calculus III before you embark on the wonderous journey of attempting to understand shear and moment diagrams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice written overview of QFT from a stat mech perspective
This book is a lengthy discussion of quantum field theory from the viewpoint of statistical mechanics. The author does a good job in connecting the theory of quantum fields with critical phenomena instatistical mechanics. Path integration is used throughout (more detaileddiscussion could be useful on how one relates the real time formulation fortime independent Hamiltonians to the Euclidean formulation). It is theEuclidean functional integral that is exploited throughout the book to makethe connections between QFT and statistical mechanics. The author shouldhave discussed the issues with analytical continuation between the realtime and imaginary time formulations. The discussion on instantons was veryilluminating. -LC (Global Mathematics, Inc) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference text. Well organized and presented.
This is an excellent text for every electrical engineering student whether graduate or undergraduate. I found the information to be clear and concise which made the concepts easily manageable. The use of mathematical formulas are placed in such a way as to aid with the reading rather than to be overbearing as other solid-state physics texts can be. The author does a great job in sectioning the book into parts, thereby making it easier to focus on a particular area of interest without having to hunt for the deisred information. For practicing engineers, this is a good reference book, especially if you are looking to gain a further understanding of device physics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, concept-oriented treatment of the subject.
The author should be commended for writing a textbook that focuses on the concepts instead of mathematical formulas, making the subject easy to comprehend. At the same time, the formulas are there for more indepthunderstanding.Overall, a good textbook for an undergraduate student ofmaterials science. ...
