5-0 out of 5 stars Without parallel in Materials Science literature
This book has no parallel in the literature of theoretical materials science. The information contained in the book allows first principle calculations of properties of important technological materials like perovskite oxides, semiconductors, etc. I would suggest the reader to consult the papers by R. Haydock and others in Solid State Physics, vol.35 of 1980 to5-0 out of 5 stars Essential book for condensed matter physicists
If you are studying the solid state physics, it is a necessary book for you. It covers various properties of almost all kinds of solid state materials and shows pretty new experimental data from reliable sources. This book also starts with a clear introduction in each chapter so thateven for a beginner, it is easy to read. This book will be a good referencebook for you to find out the definition of terminologies in this field.Personally, I use this book as a referece frequently. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Must-to-be-read"
If you were studying NMR, you need to read this. This is one of the best NMR texts ever existed. Importants physical aspects of NMR are well written in this text. This text also provides us with explanations about ESR, MRI. Simply, read this and keep it on your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars book is by excellent teacher
This is a comprehensive treatment of NMR for both graduate students in physics and researchers by someone who is clearly a master teacher.Attention is given to NMR in liquids (important for biologists) as well assolids.Schlichter is generous with details and is unfailingly aware ofthe needs of readers desiring more detailed explanations of the physics indifficult situations. He does not shirk the hard points and there is nohand-waving of difficulties. The selection of topics is excellent and theAppendices are detailed and helpful.4-0 out of 5 stars The solid-state physicists NMR bible
Go for this book when you need a rather complete introduction into the field of solid-state physics NMR and at the same time want to invest into a book that will provide you over the years of your work with more and moredetailed information. Slichter gives a thorough mathematical background aswell as a discussion of most modern NMR pulse techniques. You may want toaccompany this book in the long run with some other that tells you moreabout designing pulse techniques and/or is more visiual in this aspect.Students will find the book as a whole quite difficult to read, but it isvery worthwhile to invest your time into the introductory chapters and thenjump into the area of application that you have to become familiar with.Later you will appreciate your investment fully because this is one of thebooks from which you continue to learn till your retirement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One indispensable volume for a thin film maker
Almost all knowledges about the manufacturing of an optical thin film are coverd.Especially bibliograpy is substantial.Although most required things have gathered, they are good.About the theoretical portion of the characteristic of a thin film, explanation is by for beginners a little.Although there is nothing, since there are some which explained it mostly, they do not become a problem.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern overview that emphasizes the physics
Quantum field theory has been applied to many different areas of physics, and has done a fairly good job of explaining the phenomena in these areas. When applying quantum field theory to a physical problem one usually takes a pragmatic attitude, and ignores the many existing difficulties in its formalism. Quantum field theory has yet to be put on a rigorous mathematical foundation, but this has not deterred its use in a myriad of applications, with condensed matter physics, the subject of this book, being one of them. The author has done a superb job here, since he emphasizes the physics behind quantum field theory, and not just the formalism. Anyone interested in quantum field theory, and especially those outside the "oral tradition", will definitely benefit from its perusal. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Introduction to CFT for CMT
This book gives a fairly comprehensive and very comprehendible introduction to conformal field theory as seen from a condensed-matter theorist's point of view. The review of the book from Book News givenabove actually describes it very well. The only things that could be addedare a warning that there are typos in the text and a praise to the authorfor the superb (as always) illustrations, which he drew himself.5-0 out of 5 stars physical review

3-0 out of 5 stars Utility depends on need
This book reflects the research interests of the author, who is a genius, and should not be considered introductory, even at the graduate level.I do not find this book useful for learning anything for the first time. However, it provides an interesting perspective on many classic topics in many-body theory.Unlike the previous reviewer, I found the grandious statements a wonderful feature since most textbooks lack any of the author's voice.Reading this book is closer to attending a lecture than any text of it's kind I've read.I get this book from the library and I wouldn't pay $100 for it especially since the author posts his lectures notes on his website and much of the later material can be obtained from PROLA.

2-0 out of 5 stars mixed
The first half or so of the book is standard many body theory with a twist. While I like the twist I find that Wen omits details that should be relevant in a textbook, so to the beginning student I highly recommend going elsewhere first. To the expert (not me) it's interesting to see wen's touches. The second part of the book is just the work the author has done, which seems self serving. ...on a side note, there are a lot of very grandiose statements which can be kind of obnoxious. ... This book takes you from beginning to end for the fundamental design of sailplanes of any class, although there is much extra information for high performance craft. It shows you how to read polars and graphs such that your aircraft behaves the way you want it to.However, this is not a mechanical design book, and has no information regarding actual construction of the aircraft.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely solid for self-teaching
This book is an ideal introduction to quantum field theory for a graduate student. Assuming a strong background in basic quantum mechanics and classical mechanics, Huang develops quantum field in a methodical fashion. In contrast to other popular quantum field theory books (such as Peskin) Huang doesn't leave out important details, especially with regard to the mathematics behind spinor fields. Plus the book is very readable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the physics behind renormalization
A very good introduction to QFT. It starts with a rather classical account of QED, then develops renormalization and applies it mainly to statistical physics. So the text does not cover non-abelian gauge theories, and is notsufficient for readers who learn QFT for particle physics applications. Butthe exposition of renormalization is really excellent and complete. I likedthe exceptional clarity and lucidity of most calculations, and theexcellent set of problems. Solving them all extends the book's scope farbeyond the table of contents. ... Read more
