4-0 out of 5 stars Pedagogical introduction to the physical prop. of crystals
"Tensor Properties of Crystals" introduces gradually the readerto the physical properties of anisotropic crystals. It is a remarkable bookfrom the pedagogical point of view. In contrast with other books in thefield it doesn't require a deep previous knowledge of mathematics andcrystallography. Crystal symmetry and tensors are introduced in a verycomprehensive way in the first two chapters. The remaining chapters aredevoted to the areas of elasticity and electric and optical properties ofanisotropic crystals. Some worked examples are very useful, specially tothose who are begining with tensor manipulation. (These comments refer tothe 1st edition of the book (1989)). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible for liquid crystals!
Like every book by de Gennes, this book is a classic! This latest edition in a "must have" text for everyone even remotely associated with liquid crystals. The text is written in a self contained fashion, but the mathematics and physics is of advanced level, and to fully appreciate the content one must have some grip on statistical mechanics, tensor and vector algebra, electromagnetism and continuum physics. Thus it is ideal for physicists, a rewarding challenge for chemists and starting researchers. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A reader
This book is a good introduction to understanding the mechanical properties of solid polymers from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint. It is suitable for university students with some knowledge ofthe physical properties of polymers but advanced enough to be used in agraduate course. This is book is a much more manageable version of aprevious book by I.M. Ward, "Mechanical Properties of SolidPolymers".It has been useful as basic reference and provides furtherreferences should more details be desired.Highly recommended addition toany persons collection of polymer science and engineering books. The onlydrawback is the cost.It is a bit disappointing to see the price almostdouble in less than 3 years. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Final course in theoretical physics....there is still a solution manuel
Quantum Field Theory is the final course in theoretical physics education. This book contains many typos, which is perhaps inevitable? I am not sure whether is there still student looking for a solution manuel for problems in this book. But there is one! The book title is 'solutions for Problems in Quantum Field Theory' published by 'Scholar Books Publishing' in 2005. Its ISBN is 957-29280-7-4 or 957-29280-2-3. The book is in English, however at such a mathematical level it really does not matter which language does it written in.

2-0 out of 5 stars Much inferior to Ryder for intro QFT
I endorse most of what the reviewer below says except that Jasonc65 from Wilmington has forgotten that the derivative with respect to complex z=x+iy is d/dz=1/2(d/dx - i.d/dy) so that he should have got pi=half[i.phi(star)] by both methods - which is the right answer! Hatfield has simply got it wrong. Similarly,pi(star)=minus half(i.phi). For the correct treatment see Franz Gross "Relativistic Q.M. and Field Theory" chapter 7. And it's not the only error; simply "plugging (2.52) into an equation like (2.47)" clearly does not give (2.50) and (2.51) but gives an imaginary probability density and no i-factor in the spatial components.3-0 out of 5 stars an intriguing book, what should I say?
This book promises to be a nice read for someone with minimal background. And many people with backgrounds in physics say it's an easy read.Maybe it is for them, but not for me.Now, I admit, I am a wannabe physicist. Most of my background is in pure mathematics and computer programming. However, I have recently taken up an interest in physics, and of all the sciences, I find that books in advanced physics are the most difficult to understand, in general. It has taken me many painful hours just to understand the Langrangian and the Hamiltonian, and just last week I finally mastered Noether's theorem. And by page 20 of this book, I'm exposed to the Lagrangian density, kind of a continuous extension of the notion of the Lagrangian.Well, generalizing from finitely many particles to a continuous field is not really that difficult. And I guess that is a very important insight in and of itself. But as I read the next 5 pages, I am absolutely dumbfounded by the stretch of rigor.I can't guess what rule they'll break next, as they assume that every calculation rule will carry over in their transition from one domain to another. In fact, as I write this review, I am still stuck pondering page 25, wondering how they justify every single step.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book
Since the class book I have seems to make you search for the formulas, Ineeded a book that was a quick reference. This book is easy to read. It'smore of a reference book than a teaching book.I like having it to reviewover what the class book doesn't explain to well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book
I needed a quick reference to my Solid States class. This books puts theinformation I need right at my fingertips. While my class book is moredetailed, this book gets to the point and is a great refresher for thoseneeding to remember the points of semiconductors.

5-0 out of 5 stars surely this book is excellent
however, only for real polymer scientists. for layman, I don't think this book is a good choice. For graduate students in polymer science, especially polymer physics, I always have two books to recommend: Polymer Physics by Rubinstein and Colby, and this book by Strobl. If you want to know more about viscoelastic properties of polymers, J. Ferry's classic book will be the no.1 choice and some reviews about Rouse, Zimm, Reptation are very good. Those reviews include Lodge's Adv Phy Chem, Watanabe's Prog Polym Sci, Graessley's Adv Polym Sci, and McLeish's Adv Phys. de Gennes's and Doi and Edward's books are must for serious investigators in polymer physics (I mean, real physics, not characterizations).

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive polymer physics book!
This is a comprehensive polymer physics book, each chapter is well written with adequate depth of coverage. Most definitely the book one must pick to delve into dynamics, thermodynamics, scattering and crystallization, and get to the level of appreciating the complexity and beauty of current research and understanding in the field of polymer physics. Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Decent, Instructive Book for Serious Students
I'm no expert on polymers, but I've been exposed to a little on the subject through my work and classes, so I picked this up on sale. The beginnings of the chapters seem informative for one who wants a soundbite rather than the full meaty treatment. On a handful of occasions I've found a few numbers and figures from the book useful.Read more
