4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I find this book to be a very handy reference.Sometimes the equations get very involved, but I do like the way the material is presented.The font is kinda wierd (newest edition), but thats just a subjective thing for me. I also like the design section in the back, and the depth of information on design considerations is neat.Including this book, Swanson's analysis book is another good addition for joggling your memory on composite analysis that you took in grad school. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not half bad
When I took a composite materials course as a senior at NCSU, the teacher didn't.In a fit of desperation, I went to the bookstore and looked at all (3) composite books.This one used the same symbology as my prof's lecture notes, so I bought it, despite the price.3-0 out of 5 stars composites-trends

4-0 out of 5 stars Boom, Fling, Bang, What fun!
Silly me, I used Ether starting fluid in my first potato cannon. That is downright dangerous. But this was prior to having a nicely written book with several projects that I didn't even think of. I haven't tried any of these projects yet, but they have been carefully thought out with safety in mind. The author also gives interesting backgrounds to the projects. I wouldn't want to be "hoisted with my own petard" as Shakespeare wrote. I'm going to wait till winter with a snow cover before attempting the fire kite. Great stuff! I recommend this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Strength and Applied Elasticity 4th Edition
Many Engineering text books lately do not seem to be written well.I feel that this is not the fault of the authors as much as it is the fault of the editor.This book overall is not in my worst text book list, but can be improved very easily.I have given it a 2 star rating, meaning that it still can be improved upon and until it is improved it is a difficult book to follow.4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect
First few chapters are well treated but advanced topics are not covered in detail.For example, beams on elastic foundation chapter is not covered extensively.To conclude,anyone interested in advanced mechanics of materials should own it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Practical
As an Aerospace Engineer (structures), I found this to be the one book that remains on my shelf. It has valid and accurate ACEDEMIC explanations of structural systems - but it does not lend itself to practical implementation of those methods...and many other books do! If this book is supplementing a curriculum, it will serve its purpose well. However, if you actually plan to use what you've learned - not here.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for mechanical engineering, I recomnend it to my students
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad overview with not much rigor
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics.However, it lacks derivations of the equations, and the illustrations are a very crude.This book is probably appropriate for undergraduate level work, but not for graduate level.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Most Confusing Mechanics Book Around!
This book is awful. The writing style is terrible. I think the author needs to learn how to speak english. Here's a quote from the book:
5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand
This book is very well written, it is easy to follow and each of the examples are explained in good detail. I would say that overall this is one of the better text books that I have used in my academic career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory text for strength of materials
I was surprised at how clear and thorough this book was.I read almost the entire book (left out just a number of sections), and if you're like me and need to know the proofs for the engineering models, then this is great.It explained derivations, equation limitations, and problem-solving methods in a very satisfying way - I can honestly say that, because of this book, I have a better appreciation for how engineering methods are developed.Assuming you've studied differential equations and statics, then this book will be just right for you.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best textbook I've ever had
Simple, concise, great examples, great illustrations, great problems.The style is: present a topic briefly, derive equation(s) quickly, show 3-4 examples of using said equation(s), give a couple dozen problems, and move right on to the next topic.Thanks Mr. Hibbeler, for making engineering students' lives just a bit easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hibbeler - Best man ever
If it wasn't for Hibbeler, and his awesome text books, engineering would be much more difficult. If you take a course that has a Hibbeler text book, you learn more from reading the text than what you do going to class

4-0 out of 5 stars a first course in mechanics
Hibbeler offers an undergraduate text for the mechanical engineering student. The materials studied are solids, not fluids. The discussion starts with the simplest case of treating the bodies as totally rigid. Then we see a development of Newtonian mechanics, commencing with statics. No net velocities, in some obvious reference frame.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but so much money
This book is massive and covers a huge spectrum of material.Probably not cost effective in comparison to Fetter and Walecka unless you get it for under eighty bucks.I enjoyed it quite a bit until the Postal Service stole it from me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Containing too many misprints.
Unfortunately, the 3rd edition of Mahan's book contains enormous number of misprints. Sometimes, it is impossible to understand what is meant by the author without consulting the previous edition. For example, in Sec. 4.1.5. the author refers in the text to the equation which apparently should be between Eqs. (4.126) and (4.127) but which had been omitted. At the same time, some evident drawbacks of the previous edition have not been corrected. For example, the definition of the thermodynamic average used in Sec. 3.6 is different from that used in the previous sections, although it is not mentioned in the text. Despite the book is an excellent introduction into the field of Many-Particle Physics, I would recommend to the customer to either buy the previous edition or to wait for a new one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bien detaille, comprehensible.
... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Im a little worried
I just finished reading chapter one.I know it is quite early to make judgements, but already I'm starting to feel uneasy. As someone who has always enjoyed physics and math(and done well) I feel a little more insight into what is trying to be explained would be great.Im a student at the authors institution so I think thats why we have to use this book.I agree with others that there is a lot of waisted commentary so far, but it may prove to be usefull later.It just seems like a lot is thrown into one chapter and doesn't really mix well.More time, or more explanation about what is trying to be explained would greatly benefit the first chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Overall
I'm an undergrad physics/engineering student.I thought this book was reasonably well written and clear.It could benefit from more example problems, and some solution techniques.
3-0 out of 5 stars Wordy, some explanations are not clear, can be better.
I finished chapter 7. The authors do not show each step how to get the equations. Instead, a lot of math steps are missing. Unless you are good at math and recall all the fundamental physics equations, you will spend a lot of time to derive the equations by yourself. Without derive the equations, you can only accept the results without any insight. This book tries to cover introduction materials and more advanced materials.

3-0 out of 5 stars Erudite and encyclopedic but extremely expensive
I've used Palik & Ghosh as an occasional reference work for years, because it's very good, and has chapters on most of the materials I've needed to work with--metals, silicon, and oxide dielectrics of one sort or another. Obviously a lot of work went into it, and it's a pretty specialized business, measuring and tabulating optical properties.I'd give it 5 stars for content, no doubt about it--an orchid for the editors: for their part of the deal they deserve our praise and thanks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to nanotechnology
I started reading this book trying to get a good initial grip on the notions and progress made in nanotechnology. This book helped me exactly as I wanted. Very clearly written it takes you through a wide range of topics and in the end one manages to form a pretty good idea about development in one area or another of this very multiform field and, more importantly, gives a sense of where to go and what to expect from a certain branch.
1-0 out of 5 stars Presents abridged versions of other reviews
This book merely presents abridged versions of other reviews on nanotechnology. For example, the chapter on self-assembly misses most if not all if the initial discoveries and describes second and third generation reports that merely duplicate the concepts with new chemical building blocks. If one reads the reviews cited at the end of the chapters one will get a better view of the respective topics. ... Read more

~~~Engineering and Science are different on the point that people are trying to understand the phenomena with little knowledge of the physical background. Especially recently the interdisciplinary stuff are more and more challenging, so that's why engineers must have solid background on science. From my own experience, I do not need to take care the thermodyamics, kinetics in my former major, solidmechanics. Well, it's hard to survive if you only have knowledge on structures of a bridge~~ or a composite plate (this is just my own view, please forgive my ignorance). Nano- and Meso- scale materials are related to some mechanical problems. So I got this book to start my research on this. It is useful not only to experts but also to the outdoors like me.~~~ ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good book ; bad translation
this is a classic book. however, the new 8th edition is not translated very well. i have an older english version (6th edition, 1968) that is translated much better. even where the content is the same between the two editions, the "updated" translation is worse that in the original version.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my teaching for ever
After teaching for 22 years as a special ed. teacher, I read Sharon's book. It changed how I teach forever. Using Sharon's ideas, I decreased the amount of talking I do, increased the amount of reading my students do and saw tremendous change in even my most disabled students.One 4th grade student made 4 years growth in the first six months after I began to use Sharon's strategies and returned to her regular class. All students made significant improvements.I highly recommend her book and her ideas to every teacher of young children.You won't be sorry.
