1-0 out of 5 stars Big Joke
Beware! This book is no serious science book, it's no more than a paper-incarnation of a big poor joke..
2-0 out of 5 stars The most incomplete engineering book ever.
It's a good book it just askes me as a student to assume too much. Some of the problems at the end of the chapters are incomplete.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for starters in fluid mechanics engineering.
I bought the book by mistake since I was looking for a more physical introduction to fluid mechanics. However, once I started reading, I could not stop. The book is a pleasure to read. Every concept is explained crystal clear. No single step is skipped. Almost every concept is illustrated with one or more very detailed solved examples. It is frequent in most technical books to find how the level of clarity degrades progressively as you approach the end of the book. This is not the case. Every chapter up to the very end is carefully arranged and the level is maintained.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can download the UMAT Example from Oxford University Press website
I do not have this book. However, one effort of this book alone is enough to place it above most others. It includes useful and real examples of UMAT for ABAQUS to demonstrate how one can actually implement the theories. Having been a PhD in solid mechanics, I could have saved months if I had this book when I was in school. Even if you don't buy the book, the programs can be downloaded from publisher's website. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Does the world need yet another carbon nanotube book?
Maybe, but I'm not sure this is it. It comes VERY close though. My complaint (which prevents me from buying my own copy) is that far too many important concepts are mentioned in passing with the reader sent to the literature for the details. For $130, a bit more completeness would be nice. I realize "serious" workers in the field will call me lazy for wanting a $130 book to be as self-contained as possible. So be it... ... Read more

Editorial Review

Like most other human artifacts, the common pencil, made and sold today by the millions, has a long and complex history. Henry Petroski, who combines a talent for fine writing with a deep knowledge of engineering and technological history, examines the story of the pencil, considering it not only as a thing in itself, but also as an exemplar of all things that are designed and manufactured.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much and too little.
This is the only contemporary book on the subject that I have been able to find. For that, I give it points. But, there is too much history, (more than I need or want to know), and not enough present, (which I need more of).
4-0 out of 5 stars Pencils Plus and Minus
I've read Petroski before, so I was prepared for his discursive style, alternately entertaining and annoying.Almost everything you might want to know about the pencil is here somewhere--perhaps just not where you'd expect it to be.Different readers will bring different agenda to this book, and some may revel in the entire volume as written.Personally, I found the book too long, and I eventually began skimming Petroski's meandering commentary on the connections between engineering, technology, craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, which he probably deemed the ground for writing the book in the first place.
2-0 out of 5 stars What I first said about it.."A mark made on all civilisation"

3-0 out of 5 stars Erudite and encyclopedic but extremely expensive
I've used Palik & Ghosh as an occasional reference work for years, because it's very good, and has chapters on most of the materials I've needed to work with--metals, silicon, and oxide dielectrics of one sort or another. Obviously a lot of work went into it, and it's a pretty specialized business, measuring and tabulating optical properties.I'd give it 5 stars for content, no doubt about it--an orchid for the editors: for their part of the deal they deserve our praise and thanks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mechanic Of Materials, 2nd Edition
This book is excellent. I was educated as a nuclear engineer, but seem to constantly be drawn into mechanical problems in the power plant. I bought this book to teach myself mechanics of materials so I could develop a finite element analysis program to analyze turbine generator component stress' and strains.
5-0 out of 5 stars a Structural PE perspective
I became familiar with this outstanding text when my son took a strength of materials course at the University of Texas at Austin. As a Professional Structural Engineer, I understood the importance of this course in the engineering curriculum. Also, I know from experience that many good students have trouble mastering the material. So I bought a copy so I could help my son by telephone. I am familiar with all the major texts in this subject including the classic book by Gere and Timoshenko and the popular text by Beer and Johnston.4-0 out of 5 stars Review by a stress engineer
1. Emphasis on fundamentals - slower-paced in the beginning where engineering books should be. 2. Does not waste space on advanced topics such as thick, curved beams, etc. 3. Exception to 2 (above): Gives a brief introduction to the finite element method which is vital to today's stress engineer. Includes a 4-page insert of photos of FEM models. 4. Does not use complicated matrix and tensor notation. 5. Uses concepts of equilibrium. stress-strain, and geometric compatibility where possible. 6. Provides a systematic, 4-step, problem-solving procedure which includes a review of the solution (something manyengineers don't do enough) 7. Comprehensive discussion of strain. 8. Numerous examples and HW problems. 9. Comes with a CD-ROM containing an award-winning program called MDSolids which has numerous modules for problem solving of beams, trusses, Mohr's circle, properties, etc. It is the most user-friendly software I have ever used, and I have used a lot of software over 30 years. The CD has built-in examples for learning the material, but the modules also allow you to input your own problems. For example, the Beam Module allows you to break up a beam into up to 10 finite elements with generic loads on each element. Output values are tabulated and plotted for shear, moment, slope, and deflection. An added feature is that you can import values from one module into another. For example, you can use the Properties Module to calculate area and moments of inertia, and then import those values into the Beam Module. The CD alone is worth the price of the book. ... Read more
