Disappointing
One needs to bring some critical thinking to work as to what one buys and reads.I fully agree with reader Guido.Images are blurred, of extremely poor quality and not truly informative.There is only a small number of examples offered in the book (as if this were an attempt to bring about a touch of reality to a text that would otherwise be even dryer and engineering-oriented).The limited range of materials and processes is not representative of the industrial design practice.Besides, conceptual categories which were employed to organize the book seemed to me quite confusing and not logically classified.The author does show knowledge of the subject.However, his approach is not particularly didactical and complete--and therefore not as useful as it could be.I don't feel this is the right text and the right form for industrial designers.The book, in my opinion, does not live up to the promise of its title and price.

Terrible images: is this a book or a newspaper?! Good as a quick reference
I disagree with the reviewer from TX.The book is written using terminology that any industrial designer should be familiar with.It would make a good textbook for design students because it gives an overview of many materials & processes.It also has charts and diagrams that make the information easy to digest.My criticisms would be that it could use more examples of final products and detailed descriptions of the materials & processes used, ie case studies.For the price, it is a thin book and could easily include a case study section.I would also like more elaboration in the "charateristics, uses and properties" sections for each material with common pitfalls to avoid. ... Only textbook I've read completely twice
I used this textbook (taught by the author) as an undergraduate, and again as a clarifier in graduate school.Not only is Dr. DeHoff's book clear and logical, it dovetails nicely with the highly regarded, and more advanced, materials thermodynamics textbook by Claude Lupis.Perhaps this is because both professors spent time at Carnagie Mellon University. This is a wonderful, well-written text in thermodynamics for undergraduates and graduate students as well.The unique feature of this book is the logical approach utilized for handling equilibrium in systems of varying complexity, which I believe is superior to many of the conventional approaches.Also unique is the procedure developed by the author for deriving relations between state variables.The problem sets are quite useful and should be very helpful in understanding the subject.A solution manual I believe is also available to instructors. What this book lacks for an advanced graduate student in this field, is a comprehensive treatment of solution models and more practical applications using many of the excellent thermodynamic software and databases currently available. I would hope with enough encouragement by readers (and publisher) that these topics will be included in a future, perhaps thicker edition.Many of the non-traditional topics in thermodynamics such as defect chemistry, capillarity, electrochemistry or external fields are also introduced in the text and can be quite useful too. Best undergrad thermo text for materials science
I have been using this text for a solid state thermodynamics class I am teaching. The manner in which it is organized and structured allows one to sequentially build understanding of the complicated concepts of thermodynamics one layer at a time. For example, from the table of contents one can see a progression from the concepts of thermodynamic equilibrium to one component, multiphase systems, to multicomponent, single phase systems, then to multicomponent, multiphase systems, etc. Each chapter builds upon those that preceded it, and then becomes part of the foundation for those that follow. This organization makes it much easier for the instructor to teach this difficult subject, and I think easier for the student to comprehend it. My only objection is how phase diagrams are introduced in chapters 9 and 10. I think the presentation of the "structure of phase diagrams" in chapter 9 is confusing without the material in the first section of chapter 10. All, in all, I think this is the best undergrad text for thermo in materials science. ... Read more

Great book and great educator
i was privileged enough to have dr. kalpakjian as a teacher in college before he retired. we used his 3rd edition as our textbook. now as i start my career in engineering, i am finding that i need to refer to the book! i borrowed the book in college for his class and am now buying a copy for our office.a great reference.very well thought out book with excellent diagrams.worth every penny.

Oversimplified
The emphasis of this book seems to be more on the basic mechanics of the different processes it describes.That's fine, and important to understand manufacturing, but... A great engineering book

Great technical depth and detail, yet very easy and simple t
This was the recommended textbook for my undergraduate program in civil engineering in Pakistan for the course titled, guess what "Properties of Concrete".I am now a practising water and wastewater engineer,and my main focus is not concrete.However, I have very good memories ofthe ease with which I could follow the text even at the undergraduatelevel, and also how the book was comprehensive enough to give almost allthe answers as far as I was concerned.Excellent book, and very wellwritten.

Need to know where stuff comes from...
This book is an absolute mandatory purchase for anybody who needs to know the origin of AISC, AISI, etc, stability design criteria.The references alone are worth the price.

Don't waste your time or money
This book comprises a compendium of monographs on all aspects of coatings technology.Its coverage is admirably broad, and its hefty presence on your bookshelf is sure to impress visitors.Unfortunately, that's where this book will stay, because its information content isn't worth the poor trees that were sacrificed on its behalf. coating

The best introduction to surface science
This is a short, introductory book on surface science literally. It is very much suitable for undergraduate science and engineering students. It may sound too light for graduate students. However, if you are looking for a very simple and fundamental book, this is what you need.
