4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but Needs More Development
Let me start out by saying that an excellent starter book on FEA has yet to be written. It's a frustrating situation, but we'll have to live with it for now. Cook has the foundation for a really good book here.He does a decent job of explaining element formulations and their limitations without bringing on endless pages of variational calculus that we're all sick of seeing in FEA books. 5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise summary of zillions of theoretical concepts
Every FE analyst NEEDS to know the content in this book, because as the author points out, FE modeling is much more than mere meshing and pre-preprocessing. It's nothing fancy, just a numerical method for thesolution and the rest of the process, knowing the problem theoretically andconceptually is much more important than pretty pictures. A MUST HAVE forevery FE analyst. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Solution Manual???
I like the book so far, but dont like just checking my answers with the back of the book, usually before I check the back im sure of my work and when its wrong i'd like to know what ive done wrong, a solution manual would be quite helpful and I have not been able to find on.If anyone knows of one please e-mail me @ Jburd1183@aol.com and title it solutions manual. Thanks

1-0 out of 5 stars Fa-Hwa 2nd edition
I have used the first edition and was generally pleased. The second edition, however, is unacceptable. The rewrite added a few interesting and a few less useful topics. The problems at the end of each section were changed but the answer key referred, in many cases, to the the first edition.Sometimes the solutions were large deviations from the stated problem. There were occasional proof reading errors, far too many for a major text. The students were frequently frustrated in their efforts to justify the answer to the problem as stated.

2-0 out of 5 stars Price is not the best way to choose a text
As a college instructor, I try to choose texts based on quality, but with consideration of price. I thought this book was a good compromise, but wish I had kept my previous text. This has way too many errors for a 2ndedition, and has received considerable critisism from my students for beinghard to follow. There are better choices out there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference for fabric artists.
The only fabric book comes with real fabric swatches. A great reference for fabric artists. You know how sometimes you want to achieve certain quality but don't know what material to use. The description of each fabric helps me to choose the right material for the right projects and make sure it stays that way forever. I also learn more materials for my fabric sculpture. I finally found this ideal book after so many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars All three books in this series are invaluable!
I love fabric and love to sew, but don't really know much about the fabrics I use. These books are so well-designed and well-written that it is a joy to learn from them. Be sure to buy the versions with the fabricsamples included - that's what makes these books so special! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Photonic Crystals For Beginners
Keeping in mind, I started my research in photonic crystals with my advisor referring me to this book. So, I am speaking as a first-year graduate student with basic physics background.Hopefully, you come in this category of inexperience looking for some advice on approaching a difficult subject to understand. My only suggestion is to ask around your research group for other reading materials and also get to know your library well.In any case, you can also check out my profile which has a listing of optics and photonic crystal books that can help you out as well. So, I just wanted to let you know where I am coming from since other reviewers might be educators who already have a good understanding of photonic crystals. In some ways, it pretty much assumes alot of knowledge like my advisor who assumed me to be much the same which I was not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Introductory Book
"Photonic Crystals" is an excelent startpoint for those who want to understand how we can control and use wisely the light. The book starts with a basic introduction starting from Maxwell equations and develops the whole theory necessary to understand the propagation of light in 1D, 2D and 3D periodic structures. It is not directed for those who want to know what is being done today in the research field but rather it is an excelent introduction for beginners. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text
This is a fish of a good book! The information that has come out in the last ten years about photonic band-gap materiels can be confusing and offputting. This book enables any astute reader a comprehension of the various properties that come into play when dealing with and controlling the propogation of light. I recommend it highly for use in the classroom as well as for the bedstand. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized technical reading...
Although this book has accurate technical content, the organization is ill-thought and amounts to little more than numerous papers stapled together under a pretty cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars PVD from A to Z
If you are new to PVD as I am, you will find this book to be well worth the money. If the book doesn't give you enough details on what you are interested in, it will give you a ton of references to get you in the right direction. As a graduate student working on different PVD techniques including RF Sputtering, Thermal Evaporation, Electron Beam Evaporation, and Arc Deposition I use this book all the time. The only drawback is that it is huge but I liked it so much, I simply bought a copy for the lab and a copy for home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Handbook from a very practical man.
This is a valuable Handbook for people working in related industries, universities and research institutes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thumb up!!!
Hi!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Creates an excellent foundation.
An excellent book for learning about fiberglass/composites. Before reading this book, I had little knowledge about composties, but a desire to learn. The information is presented in a way that anyone can understand it. Aird educates the reader about different fiber types and weaves, resins and resin systems, gel coat, trade tools, safety, and basic lay-up. He also includes information on molds, plugs, and strength/stress -- though I feel these sections make having some hands-on knowledge of composites an asset, which I lack. It is an excellent book that can take you from knowing nothing, to a point where you can talk intelligently about composites with someone in the FRP field. As other reviews have pointed out, this is not a step by step manual; but is probably a prerequisite to actually understanding one. In conclusion: I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about fiberglass and composite systems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the price
I had an interest in getting into Fiberglassing, so i bought this book.As most of the other people who reviewed this book said, it's not a step by step manual, but it offers a very good overview.Good enough that i ended up buying a second copy for a friend. If you have an interest, i would recommend this book. It's worth the price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A good book with practical explanations
This is a good book that provides a simple reference for civil engineering students. You probably need to have some previous knowledge in deformable mechanics to have a comprehensive understanding of the material. This would not be a problem except that many schools (mine in particular) require a CE materials course before taking junior level deformable bodies.Students should not be deterred by this and will have no problem understanding the bulk of the material, as long as the professors using this text are aware of this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Student Review
Civil Engineering Materials,by Shan Somayaji, is an excellent tool for learning the fundamentals of materials used for civil engineering. The book consists of Theoretical material with examples and graphs thatreinforce the concepts covered. The key equations are set in bold, similarto other engineering text books.Unlike other engineering texts, this bookdoes not confuse the reader. This is acomplished by providing only thematerial relevent to the current section. The material included consistsof materials from aggregates to concrete to lumber and its grading.I usedthis book to help me complete a intoductory to engineering materialscourse.I would reccomend this book to people who have completed astrength of materials course and are interested in gaining knowledge of themost common materials used in the civil engineering profession. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The smoking lamp is lit!
As I'm fond of telling whoever will listen, I never touched alcohol until I went to seminary.Cigars are an even more recently acquired vice.My older brother got me into Macanudos, and since then I've enjoyed Avos, Buteras, and Arturo Fuentes.I'm even a regular at a Portland cigar bar, where I unwind after a long workweek with tawny port, long stogie, and a good book.I've learned enough about cigars to be dangerous, so I wanted a more formal knowledge base about them. Therefore, I decided to pick up this guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barsoum's text
Barsoum's text, "Fundamentals of Ceramics", is the best theoretical treatment of materials science that I am familiar with. He provides in-depth coverage of many mat-sci principles and derivations, from the elementary to the advanced. Caveat emptor, however, as there are also many mistakes in this book. Barsoum would do a great service to the mat-sci community by updating this text and publishing a new edition that corrects the mistakes and provides a more thorough explanation of experimental principles to compliment his theoretical information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent broad based intro text
This text is very clearly written, and an absolute must as a reference for the fundamentals of ceramics. The text ties basic priciples of physics to the structure and behavior of ceramics. The text is ideal for late undergrad, early graduate studies - and is also perfect for scientists and engineers without a background in Materials Engineering *because* it draws on basic physics to clearly cover the topic.Especially useful are the numerous examples within the chapters to highlight important ideas, and the last six chapters - which give important infrmation on electrical, optical, and mechanical properties of ceramics.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Books in the Field Compare
Dr. Barsoum has covered all the bases in this well thought out and beautifully organized book! The author makes the field of ceramics interesting even to people new to the field. This book was used in a courseI took, and I will not sell it because it is such an authoritativereference source. There are no other books that compare to Fundamentals ofCeramics. ... Read more
