4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read but book compiled with great care and detail
I must agree, it is probabily not the easiest book, you can pick up and read. It is voluminous, information is very dry, might be difficult to 'make notes' from this book. It may not be structured the way, you might normally find in most of the textbook. But having said that the information is compiled with great care and extraordinary detail. It contains the cutting edge information you can find out about biomaterials. For example, each section made up of 10-15 pages is purely written straight out of the latest journal articles.
2-0 out of 5 stars Biomedical Engineering Student
...I was not impressed with the content of this book because of mistakes made in the data it reported ie. that polymers can't form crystalline structures. I also found that the equations presented in the text did not have detailed information and at times the explaination of how to use the equations were slight.5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for beginners and advanced students
This is a well written book with something for just about everyone. There are parts geared directly to engineers, but issues like foreign body response are dealt with rigorously enough for the best bio geek. All classes of implantable devices are covered with a healthy dose of historyto boot! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book
One could read all day out of a book and still not be able to visualize how to identify different fabrics.Texture is so much more important.I don't sew but I do buy vintage clothes for my prop company. This book was very helpful. The only thing I think would be better if all the fabrics except the tweeds, etc. were the same color.

5-0 out of 5 stars all about silk
I bought this book in 1993 because i needed to familiarize myself with the silk fabric.i also bought many other books on the subject.today i was browsing through my bookself and came across my copy of all about silk and i am still amazed by its content.i will now order the other two books which have since been available.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible book
This is an absolutely indispensible book for costume designers andseamstresses alike. It has an incredibly easy format to read loaded withpertinent information about the fabrics as well as the actual fabricsamples.I am studying to become a costume designer and realized that myfabric vocabulary was very limited. I was overjoyed to find this book andam loving it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Inaccessible
Denn's text is much shorter than most introductions to fluid mechanics, but he seems to have left out all of the material that would make the topicinteresting and accessible to the novice. The topics are well-ordered andhave a logical progression, but almost all of the explanatory matter ismissing. It is extremely difficult to get a conceptual understanding offluid dynamics by looking at page after page of variable manipulation.Inaddition, the index is so incomplete as to be useless; most of the termsone would look up are not listed, or point only to the page where it wascursorily defined.4-0 out of 5 stars Pedagogically logical;ordered progression of concepts
Denn's book is an excellent introductory text for chemical engineering fluid mechanics. The book starts off with the basics of dim-analysis and proceeds into macro and then micro problems. This is a very logicalordering and allows the student to see the subject from a broaderperspective instead of getting bogged down in the systematics of theproblems themselves.A careful reading is definitely needed to get themost out of the book, though. And the section on turbulence is a bitunclear.Overall, though, a good book to keep for many years to come as achem eng.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate coverage of chemical engineering fluid mechanics
"Process Fluid Mechanics" is a very satisfactory introductory text on chemical engineering fluid mechanics. Denn shows the basics of fluid mechanics in a concise, mathematical, and theoretical manner. A must-have for any beginning chemcical engineering fluid mechanics class. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to follow and riddled with errors
This book suffers from several major deficiencies. First, it is inherently difficult to follow. The format is designed in such a way that you have to constantly refer back and forth between pages to get all the information you need for an example or derivation. The other thing is the examples are not clear. You find yourself solving the example again because the method isn't clear. In this way, I find the book extremely frustrating. Even after the problems with the contents, the book has errors. Lots and lots of errors. Just look on the inside front cover. "Principal Elastiac Equations"? I checked the dictionary, and I don't know what elastiac is. Or Ch. 12: "Yield and Fructure Criteria"? Is that a new term for the fracture of fructose? Finding all the errors is kind of fun, so if you're into that, get this book. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Badly needs updating, editing, simplifying
This book makes a difficult subject even more difficult. While the definitions and general information are good enough, the derivations seem to be very complicated, esoteric, and confusing. This may be appropriate for graduate level (although many of these techniques are obsolete in view of FE analysis) but this book bills itself, and is used mainly for undergraduate deformable mechanics classes. There seem to be a number of mistakes in the book as well.Professors should probably not use this book for an undergraduate level course--find something newer.Undergrads will probably need to get some sort of supplementary outline material that will simplify things.

1-0 out of 5 stars Riddled with typos
The good: This is a comprehensive book. The bad: It has tons of mistakes. There are typos galore. The most egregious one occurs in the chapter entitled "Yield and Fructure Criteria." That's right, "Fructure." Pray tell, what exactly is "Fructure"? That's what's printed in big letters. The proofreading is very, very, very sloppy. Maybe these mistakes are more a function of editing deadlines rather than with Popov himself, but that doesn't mean that this isn't a bad volume that you shouldn't waste your money on. I used this book as a text and was very disappointed. Save your money and buy Beer and Johnston or Craig instead. Or even Popov's earlier work, Mechanics of Materials, which I liked a lot. Engineering Mechanics of Solids is just horrible in its mistakes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Book Available on the Subject
The advent of fire arms spelt the end of the armored knight of old. Until very recently the soldier on the battlefield had no protection from being shot. The problem is that the only materials that would offer suitable protection was steel, and steel is so heavy that it is impractical to protect more than a small part of the body. Usually only the head was protected using helmets that offered some protection from the fragments of shrapnel of grenades and exploding artillery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Top of the class
This 4-volume set of paperback books provides a thorough and readable introduction to the science and practice of TEM (transmission electron microscopy). The text is divided into short, digestable sections, each accompanied by figures, graphs and plots. The equations are numerous, but well explained and presented with minimal derivations but full explanations. The books are divided into concise sections making it easy for the reader to find what he/she needs.Overall, a perfect textbook to learn about TEM, and as a reference for those more experienced in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seems like the best TEM book
Good for both beginners and advanced users. Easy to read and well organized. It looks like there are some mistakes in some equations but it is the best TEM book available.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.
The Williams and Carter book is considered the "standard" in introductory TEM but that does not mean the book is any good.In fact, the writing and explanation is so disjointed in some chapters that our own instructor told us to skip those sections. There are also numerous incorrect figures that will really throw a curve to someone learning TEM for the first time.Buy the book if absolutely necessary but first go to the library and find one of the older texts from 30-50 years ago where they take the time to explain things correctly. ...
