1-0 out of 5 stars 9th edition 2nd printing has many errors
If you are buying this for an Engineering Statics class, I would suggest trying to locate the 9th edition, 1st printing. Although the text portion is identical, the problem sections in the 2nd printing often refer to illustrations that are nonexistant or incorrect. In addition, the many answers have no correlation to the referenced problem at all.Our instructor assigns many problems as homework, and this has caused major headaches for a majority of the class. I have compared the two printings, and the 1st printing does not contain these errors.Otherwise, the book does a very good job in explaining the various concepts.NOTE: The people at Prentice Hall are unsure if new replacements will be available until after this semester (Spring 2003).DO NOT BUY THE 2ND PRINTING IF YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO WORK THE PROBLEMS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Introductory Statics Text
This book is good for the begining Engineering student. It contains good diagrams with clear and concise text.It should be easy to follow for anyone with a basic background in physics. My only complaint is that while it has a great selection of questions (with answers to odd problems in back), it lacked good example problems.I am the type of person who learns primarily from studying examples of solved problems and was disappointed with this deficiency. Still, with the compainon volume on Dynamics it can certainly be used as an effective primary text for first year engineering students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Notes on the 2nd Edition (1978 Edition)
I needed the Chapter on equivalent force systems this weekend at work.It provided a very helpful summary review of the material I needed, but it misled me with two sentences. Here was my task: given a resultant force and torque on a rigid body, both referred to a specific point, I needed to refer them both to a different point. The answer can be phrased as follows: "The same force acts at the new point, along with an R x F torque about the new point, where the R connects the two points, and the F is the given force. The additional torque vector about the new point is equal to the torque vector about the first point."The author misled me with these two sentences (paraphrased), "The resultant force at the new point is independent of location. However, the resultant moment at the new point depends on location, since the moments of the forces are computed using position vectors."I find this subject of great interest, but those two sentences misled me.They are not incorrect, but I hope that the author rephrased them and added more detail in later editions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
As a graduate student attempting to learn density functional theory and its use in computer programmes, I have found this book to be an excellent addition to my library.Well structured and written.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not impressive
Although the topics the book embrasses are current and essential for practising chemists, physisists and materials scientists the pedagogic care with which it explains some of the topics is poor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
This book was recommended to me to help me in my research, and has turned out to be one of the best recommendations I have ever received. This is a great book; by far the best I have come across on the topic of computing the properties of condensed phase materials by quantum mechanical simulations. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not so impressive.
This book is written by various experience P.E. or Professors. It is not emphasis on practical calculation. There are very few example and definitions for formulars and related equation. If reader has no experience before, it would be very difficult to understand. Half of the book is devoted to bridge design, and it dose not provide enough information to design a bridge..5-0 out of 5 stars Designer in structural steel is a complete book , do not buy
Many eng. firm have this book, this is a good reference for manystructural problem, The most difficult for a designer is thesimplify the problem, and create model with the forces on it. Merrits book cover a very large utility of different subjets. And this is not a fist edition, no error a have see on this book. This book is good at the respeact that it has a variety amount of problem of each type that the author WANT students to solve.
3-0 out of 5 stars Alright text
I have to say that this text was a little too verbose. The subject is difficult so text cannot be blamed entirely for it being boring.

Although in my class we did not go through too many of the chapters I found it fairly easy to follow and if you have a strong interest in fluids this would be a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schaum's Outline of Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Schaum's)
It is an excellent condition and delivered on time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good source of solved problems in fluid mechanics
I am not a mechanical engineer. Instead, I am an electrical engineer who took an undergraduate fluid mechanics class last fall to help with some graphical simulation work I was doing. However, I still had to pass the same examinations and do the same homework as the other students who did have a mechanical engineering background, and I found this outline immensely helpful. This book is an excellent source of problem-solving techniques and exercises for anyone who is taking an undergraduate course in fluid mechanics, which is the branch of science concerned with how fluids behave at rest or in motion. This outline assumes that you are already familiar with statics and with calculus, and it makes heavy use of both subjects. There is not a lot of verbal explanation in this outline. Explanation is done mainly through the introduction of some formulas, and then some completely worked out examples using those formulas. It is not at all dry in its presentation, however, and makes heavy and appropriate use of instructive figures and diagrams. Fluid mechanics is about solving problems, and the most difficult part is analyzing the system and reducing it to a series of equations. Once this has been achieved there are a number of standard methods that can be used to solve them. This book gives a good amount of practice at allowing the student to figure out how to approach larger problems in chapters 8 through 10 - "Flow in Closed Conduits", "Complex Pipeline Systems", and "Flow in Open Channels", and also in the final chapter of the outline "Fluid Machinery". This book is a great companion to Munson's "Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics", which is the best textbook on the subject that I have encountered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for Reference/Overview
Like all of the Schaum guides for subjects in Mechanical Engineering, this outline provides a good overview of fluid mechanics, but it doesn't go into a great deal of depth. It's easy to find the equations if you want to usethe book as a reference manual or a study guide, and the problems can serveas a good supplement to an undergraduate class in Fluids. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook from a student's point of view

5-0 out of 5 stars Agreat book by Nozer Singpurwalla
The book by Nozer Singpurwalla provides a clear introduction to the definition of "Probability", and the foundations on which the Probabilistic Framework is built. In almost every facet of today's life, Probability is dominant as a used concept. Although seemingly trivial to define in some simple cases such as cards or flipping a coin, much controversy prevailed over centuries on the topic of what is exactly meant by "Probability". The author Singpurwalla provides an extremely clear and abundant discussion of the subject, that is relevant at the introductory level as well as at the top level of the scientific community. This introduction is done in the context of Reliability and Risk Analysis, which makes it even easier to comprehend than in a more abstract setup. The book is worth buying on the basis of the second chapter alone "The Quantification of Uncertainty".

2-0 out of 5 stars This is an example book.
If you have some basic knowledge of LRFD design and connection. This would be an OK book. It contains so many example in many load cases and connection type. All of them are hot rolled steel or high force connection. In example it dose not tell how to retrive this equation, reference to variables, and how to use this equation.. you only have to guess. If you guess right, then it can be applicable to real construction.

5-0 out of 5 stars For engineers looking to make connections...
Tamboli's connection handbook complements the AISC Connections Manual beautifully. In a clear, easy-to-follow way, it addresses all of the major procedures for connecting structural elements and the philosophy behind them. The handbook uses thoughtful examples and good photos to explain how connections work and are built. The tips it gives, especially for connections to composite members and space trusses, are particularly helpful in practical design. I have never seen a more complete, quality connections manual, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their knowledge of the latest connection techniques.
