1-0 out of 5 stars New & Improved? NOT
I have access to Peterson's original book (older than me?) and to the first edition of this one, published in 1974. I recommend buying used copies of the old ones. They contain the same info and are easier to use since the charts are bigger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Stress Risers and Other Structural Phenomena
Absolutely essential book for anybody interested in stresses in notched bodies; structural analysts who like to use the 'back of the envelope', finite element analysts, fracture mechanicists; designers in aerospace, rail, heavy machinery, light machinery, medical devices, almost anything you can name. Book has been updated from the original; even if you have the original edition, this 2nd edition is well worth having for your engineering reference library.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BOOK

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
If you want to learn about the title subject, this is a great intro book. And it's probably the most enjoyable theory book you are likely to own, if you purchase it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forces you know or not????
The above "reviewer" needs to learn the English language!What the hell is that guy trying to tell us?I'm glad the book is useful to the outdoors.5-0 out of 5 stars Forces you know or not
~~~Engineering and Science are different on the point that people are trying to understand the phenomena with little knowledge of the physical background. Especially recently the interdisciplinary stuff are more and more challenging, so that's why engineers must have solid background on science. From my own experience, I do not need to take care the thermodyamics, kinetics in my former major, solidmechanics. Well, it's hard to survive if you only have knowledge on structures of a bridge~~ or a composite plate (this is just my own view, please forgive my ignorance). Nano- and Meso- scale materials are related to some mechanical problems. So I got this book to start my research on this. It is useful not only to experts but also to the outdoors like me.~~~ ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage
I found the coverage excellent. I was originally reading another text, but that book left out critical material that makes its presentation fuzzy (which is why I looked at this book instead). This book is excellent in that it builds up all the necessary machinery from first principles and explains things in a way that someone without any prior knowledge in fluids can understand the material.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a good fluids book
I like this book much more than Fay or White or Batchelor.
3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book, but very sloppy editing with mistakes
This book is very comprehensive and covers all of the major aspects of fluid mechanics. However, there are several mistakes in this book. Some of the problem solutions are wrong, but above all, the equations are often referenced incorrectly. This can make it quite frustrating for students, especially when they haven't figured out that they are being misled. ... Read more
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible textbook
B. D. Cullity has authored or co-authored several textbooks on x-ray diffraction that are commonly used in college classes on diffraction.This version by Addison-Wesley which was first published in the late 1970's is probably the worst one.The text is very difficult to understand, equations are not fully explained, and many terms are used that can be quite unfamiliar to engineers and scientists without prior knowledge of reciprocal space and crystallography.The book attempts to explain the entire concept of diffraction using Bragg's law, without providing the more intuitive view of photons and electrons in the Brillouin Zone.As such, the conceptualization is tricky even though the math is not that difficult.I would not recommend buying, or even using this book, for learning or teaching about diffraction.
1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Edited Edition
Cullity's expostion of x-ray diffraction is excellent, but the third edition, as noted by other reviewers, is missing all chapter specific references. If you're interested in this title, try to find a copy of the second edition.
1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
The 2nd Edition of "Elements of X-ray Diffraction" by B.D. Cullity ranks among the best introductory books ever written on the subject. When I bought this 3rd edition I hoped to obtain a book of similar standards. However, exchanging chapter titles (to less meaningful descriptors) and a mere renumbering of chapters and appendices (leaving nearly the complete body of the 2nd edition unchanged) was far from my expectations. I have sincere doubts, if the few brief sections added in this 3rd edition provide much useful information for a newcomer. Somehow, I feel they destroy the integrity of an old well-written text. Above all the publisher obviously did a poor job: The pages with "Chapter references" were completely lost somehow (they amounted to 9 pages in the 2nd edition) and are dearly missed whenever a reader wants to dwell a little bit deeper into the subject and use the citations provided in the text. If you want to go for a good introductory text on X-ray diffraction then choose the 2nd edition. Although based on knowledge of the sixties, and thus slightly old-fashioned, it still makes the point in a consistent and scholarly way. Lets hope the 2nd edition will be available for some time. ... Read more
4-0 out of 5 stars Teacher & Engineering
It is a very good one. I would recommend to buy if you could afford the price.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great information -- several typos, however
The graphs and data provide a lot of good information but the book has several typos in key areas which lead to many hours of frustration. Also, I wish the book was offered in hardcover.I appreciate the desire to keep the costs low for the students, but a book like this will be life long resource for working engineers and I don't feel that the book will hold up well over the years with a soft cover.
5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable!
As a student in Materials Science and Engineering, this book has again and again been a priceless resource.It contains data and references which are clearly presented and precisely commented, and I often catch myself looking up the graphs or the appendices to find the solution to a particular problem.The Case Studies are very instructive and sometimes even amusing to read; they always reinforce a point previously made and give the reader a sense of history for the object in question (telephone, hair dryer, etc.).But the book doesn't stop at purely functional design; it also covers aesthetic aspects with the motto: "Good design works; excellent design also gives pleasure." This is a pleasing book. ... Read more
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know about the chemistry of nanomaterials
Not for the faint of chemistry, "Nanochemistry: A Chemical Approach to Nanomaterials" by Geoffrey Ozin and Andre Arsenault explains the creation and function of materials with at least one dimension between one and 1000 nanometers.If you seek a light narrative about what nanotechnology will bring our world, Nanochemistry is not your book (and it's too heavy to read in bed anyway).If, on the other hand, you seek the scientific details of how nanomaterials really work, this is your textbook or reference.
2-0 out of 5 stars When Spellcheck Fails
Enjoy the speling errors and, gramatical misstakes on allmost evry, pages.One would suppose after four editions all such errors would have been annihilated.Maybe the mistakes are meant to maintain the reader's vigilance.Perhaps the typos exist so that one day edition 6 might also.
3-0 out of 5 stars only a reference
Do NOT pay more than 75 CENTS for this book.No one wants it because it is outdated and its in one of those book lines that gets completely updated each year.Thus, all previous editions are barely worth the paper and binding.
2-0 out of 5 stars An incomplete volume
This book offers just enough information to cripple a student. Descriptions of lattice structures contained scant information on any structure other than Face-Centered Cubic structures or Base-Centered Cubic structures. The book did not provide adequate reasoning behind the formation of Diamond centered cubic structures, of importance when dealing with ceramic materials. Ambiguous explanation of the Hexagonal close packed structure lead to difficulty understanding what effects stucture causes.
1-0 out of 5 stars Can't review a book I never received
I waited 6 weeks and Amazon never sent the book so I cancelled the order and gave up.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good general overview
This was a great book for an overview but did not go into great depth for some of the topics. The book does have a lot of great picture and I think it is well worth the read.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview for textiles
If one is studying interior design or one wants to learn about textiles, this book is very informative. This was used as a textbook for a textiles class in an interior design program.
