3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Physicists
The book covers alot of material, but often repeats itself in later chapters.
5-0 out of 5 stars Test and Measurement Bible
This books stands heads and shoulders above anything else written so far on the test and measurement of fiber optic systems and components. The other reviewers have given details about the books content, so I'll say why I liked the book.5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Test and Measurement Book
This text is essential for anyone who wishes to test or measure optical sub-components, components, systems, or devices. Dennis lays out the fundamentals of each measurement in an easy to understand format. This is especially useful because this field is growing tremendously and often utilizes people from other fields who lack familiarity with these measurements. This book provides as easy to understand tutorial for people who need to learn these techniques. If you can't measure what you have very well, you don't know what you sent to your customer; and if they can't measure what you sent them, they don't know what they have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall this is an excellent book
St. John, Poole, and Sims are internationally known experts in concrete petrography and their book brings together information from a wide range of sources. The primary focus of this book is the use of the petrological polarizing microscope for the study of concrete and related materials. Petrographic methods used for many years in geology are also valuable in the study of concrete. The book assumes a working knowledge of the petrographic techniques. Chapter two includes a brief description of petrographic examination techniques and chapter three discusses sample preparation. The main body of the work provides a detailed discussion of the use of petrographic microscopy to study the composition, appearance, and texture of concrete and related materials. A chapter on the examination of deteriorated and damaged concrete, also, is included. Color photomicrographs included throughout the book enhance its value. The detailed index makes locating specific information relatively easy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommend it
Okay we followed this book for our lecture in thin films given by the first author of the book LB Freund, one of the best instructors i ever had. i will try not to be biased by his teaching skills while writing this review. i would say that its a must reference who are working in thin film area be it experimental or modeling. but i believe that you need to have a sound background atleast in continuum mechanics and elasticity to fully follow the mechanics (of deformation) part of the thin film on your own. the best thing i liked about this book is its methodical structure for e.g. deriving the basic Stoney's relation by minimizing the energy, then talk about its assumption in detail and then removing those assumptions one by one to make the relation more realistic (and offcourse more complicated). there are other things like material properties of common thin film materials used in microelectronics, topics on surface morphology etc. his writing style is very clear... again not for someone who doesnt have necessary background.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente referencia.....

Editorial Review

The title of this book could not be more explicit or apt. With 40 actual wood specimens in popular use, descriptions of grain, color and texture, how to identify trees by their leaves, fruit, and bark, and much more, this is a small encyclopedia for woodworkers, carpenters, hobbyists, dealers, architects, craftsmen, nature lovers, teachers, or anyone with the urge to learn about wood. With small, aromatic samples of 40 varieties of wood, from afrormosia to zebrawood, this book even smells good! --Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Focus On European Not USA Species
This book is of little value for the woodworker trying to identify woods commonly used on the American continent. When the species are described (with wood samples provided) the European varieties are given to the exclusion of woods from this continent.Species vary enough from the Euopean continent to make the book of very little use in identifying American woods and can even be misleading. The grain pattern on Birch is a classic example and Birch is used a great deal on funiture.4-0 out of 5 stars Quiet and straightforward
This is a very friendly and straightforward book. It starts with veneer samples (quite small, but big enough) of 40 woods and finishes with descriptions of the trees that yield these 40 woods.5-0 out of 5 stars Great samples. Great book.
If your working on a project involving exotic woods, then this book should be added to your library. The REAL wood samples are great. The book also has very useful information about many types of wood. I find this book tobe a handy reference tool and am glad to have added it to my collection. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Has some good info, but unorganized
The book is somewhat helpful, but if you don't remember exactly where something is, the index will pretty much be useless. The book is also kind of hard to read/follow... I definitely wouldn't recommend this book unless you absolutely have to buy it for a class.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well-written elementary text on Phase Transformations

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for the uninitiated
I have been using this book for my research for the past year.Over all the this design guide by Ashby is excellent. It is well written for those who do not have any background in design using metal and polymer foams. The chapters are short and concise. If, after reading this book, you want to dig deeper in the world of foam, then read Cellular Solids by Lorna Gibson.

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's get foaming!
Ashby et al have made a timely and very useful contribution to the literature of metal foams. The book will provide an essential resource to designers, developers and researchers in this exciting emerging field. The coverage is very thorough with material on manufacturing methods, design, economics and current applications. The section on web resources is very topical. ... Read more

The book isn't overall bad, but the explanations assume a strong comprehension of the subject. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the main references for modern Fatigue Analysis
Very good book. It tackles all the main aspects of modern Fatigue Analysis. The atentive reader, following the text with a paper and pencil besdies, will extract valuable ideas for procedures. I am looking forward for books written in the same style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview with engineering data!
If there is a single book on *just* metal fatigue for your shelf, this is it. The treatment of material is rigorous without being too terse or long-winded. There's an enjoyable amount of real-world experience mixed in with the text: bits of highly relevant distilled information. Plus, there is data in the appendix that is difficult to find elsewhere (aluminum, etc).

4-0 out of 5 stars An Overview Sort of Text
There are a number of texts in this field. This one is by authors whose professional reputations are top notch. However, this book's strengths lie in their qualitative approach. It is a very good book for a short course, and introduction or overview, but for a graduate text I feel it falls short in that it is lacking in mathematics and too qualitative. That said, the illustrations of specificRead more

2-0 out of 5 stars preview other M.o.M. books before buying this one
This book was written for seasoned professionals.I am a engineering student, and I depend on this book to help me understand mechanics of materials, but it simply doesn't do this. The authors of the book assume that all readers already know the material. It is extremely frustrating to read this book. The example problems are ambigous. The reading simplydoes not prepare the reader for the problems at the end of each chapter. The only reason why I give this book two stars is because they have verygood visual illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and well written
I bought this book as a supplementary reference for mechanics of materials, which I do at my job. The book is well written, with plenty of example problems sprinkled throughout. I also found this book to be verycomprehensive. For example, I found material on the mechanics of shrinkwrapping, which I don't see in many other books on strength of materials. The only thing I would fault is that some of the chapters are too long andwould have been better from a pedogical standpoint if they'd been broken upinto smaller chapters. In particular, Chapter 7 on beam stresses could havebeen divided into separate chapters concentrating on pure bending andtransverse loading. That way, a discussion of pure bending leads naturallyinto transverse loading. Instead, these topics are sort of thrown togetherinto one big chapter, overwhelming the student. But overall, it's anexcellent volume. Given a choice, I'd recommend Beer and Johnston, but youwon't go wrong with Riley et al. either. ... Read more
