Not at all what I expected
I thought this book would be more technical, with more details about glass itself. It's really just about the Renaissance and Greek revival. I can remember reading many pages without the word 'glass' even being mentioned! If I wanted to discuss the origins of science, I would have read a book titled that, not a book called "Glass". I expected the book to actually be about glass! I'm actually dreading finishing this book.

Spectacles of history
Glass is a wonderful material for making vessels to drink out of, but its real importance is the role that it played in the early industrial revolution.Clear glass made such instruments as the microscope, the telescope, the barometer, and the various forms of chemical laboratory vessels possible and until the invention of transparent synthetic polymers, was just about the only material that could serve. Glass, a necessity!
When I bought the book, I was more or less expecting a history of how glass was made and the development of glass through history. I was mistaken.Read more

The best book on the subject
This is a very good introduction to the existing methods to produce synthetic gemstones. The edition covers a wide range o stones (i.e. emeralds, opals, diamonds, quartz etc) and techniques, and although I think there is too much information on synthetic diamonds (which I am not too interested) the book is still complete enough on the other topics too. Considering that not much has been published on journals about these methods, this books does a good job presenting the information that's around. The references are not very complete and the author could have used more information from patents (although there are none from Chatam and Gilson), but if you are an interested person or someone trying to find some information about synthesis of precious stones (which is very hard to find) this is the source. Kurt Nassau also wrote a second book on the Physics of Color, which is more theorical than this one. ... Read more
