The absolute, hands down, BEST pottery book on earth.
This is probably... no. ABSOLUTELY the best and most wonderfull book I have ever run across. Obstler does an amazing job of showing (and explaining) the true process of ceramics. This is not a technique or coffee table book although it is easily better at both categories than most books of that sort. This IS a book more about the materials of ceramics than the finished product. Mimi lovingly portrays the full cycle of the process which produces a pot. Something all true potters should know is that the actual end result, the pot, is the smallest and most insignificant part of ceramics. In this book, the reader is introduced to the whole life of the materials which we use. In a mish mash of history, formula, chemistry and geology, Mimi Obstler creates a unique and awe-inspiring story not just of the pot or potter, but of the earth from which both are born. A necessary book for any serious potter.
"Out of the Earth Into the Fire" is a necessary book for any potter, and is especially useful for any potter doing their own glazes.It details in it's four chapters, although very long and comprehensivechapters, all of the glaze and clay making ingredients that you will need.The first chapter deals with the glaze cores. It talks of both thehistorical and the emperical aspects of all the necessary substances inuse. A substance that I can't wait to get my hands on is Rotton Stone. I'lllet you read the book to find out why. The second chapter is about claysand clay bodies.Although most of us buy prepared clay this gives us reasonto make our own. The next chapter concerns auxillary melters.We find hereabout glaze surfaces; how to best utilize a substance to make a glossy, amatt, or an opaque surface. Finally the last chapter reveals all we want toknow about silica and alumina. The appendices are full of useful material.There are even some good pictures in this book. An unexpected surprise. ... Avid blue ridge collector!
I have to disagree with the above review. I found the review to be totally incorrect and unfair. Blue Ridge China Today" is both a beautiful and informative book. What a great introduction to Blue Ridge! My wife and I have been collecting for many years and have been looking for such a complete guide to assist us in our Blue Ridge purchases. The authors are to be commended for their relevant and insightful descriptions of confusing patterns. We found the pictures, descriptions and prices to be very clear; easy on the eye and easy to understand! This book has been very helpful to us in helping us to build our own beautiful and valuable Blue Ridge Collection! In addition, it has encouraged our children to start their own collections! Bravo John and Frances! Well done! When are you going to send us more?

Not recommended!
I waited with anticipation for the delivery of this most recent Blue Ridge book.I was terribly disappointed.....extremely unprofessional in its overall organization, layout and quality of photos.Some pictured itemshave values beneath, some do not. Some are not even identified.If youwere looking to identify something specific, you would nearly have to lookthrough the whole book...I have to say that it seems more like a personalphoto album with collectors holding up their prized pieces, than it seemslike a guide.There is a price guide in the back that seems adequate...butif you don't know what the items look like, you're out of luck...as thereare no pictures with that. I have the Blue Ridge Encyclopedia from 1989 andfind that book infinitely more professional and useful despite the factthat its price list is out of date and collectors have changed some oftheir interests. This book truly is more like a photo album...it showscurio cabinets full of Blue Ridge pieces, often with just one or two piecesin the whole cabinet identified....if you can even see them well enough tomake an identification. Often a caption asks one to "note" thepresence of a certain item, but does nothing to help a newbie understandthe importance of that piece!I can't imagine what the publishers werethinking. If you are a versed BlueRidge collector, you might enjoy thesesnapshots and tours through collectors' display shelves...but if you are abeginner, I recommend you start with a Blue Ridge book by differentauthors.After reading through this book one time, I thought "Well, Idon't know any more about Blue Ridge than when I started." ... Do not be misled by the title. This is more a detailed encyclopedia of glass than a simple dictionary, with many in depth articles covering the history, art and technology of glass working.Read more

Well...I am a little (!) biased at the get-go in writing this review since I know Dr. Shanefield in person (in fact his office is next to mine!). This book aims at providing the reader with a sound backround in ceramic processing, as well as the essential "working tools" needed in real life. It is written rather densely.
