5-0 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Knowledge about Sol Gel Science
Perhaps it's trite to say this, but Brinker and Scherer's _Sol Gel Science_ is *the* indispensible desktop reference for the sol-gel chemist.Though now over a decade old, the topics covered (only a smattering of which are mentioned in the editorial review above) are so fundamental that it remains one of the most often cited sol-gel references, both in texts and refereed journal articles. The layout of the book takes the reader through the entire sol-gel formation process, from reaction to casting to drying, curing and other post-modificiations, with a chapter devoted to each step - permitting this book either to be read cover-to-cover (for the interested newcomer or as a text for a course in sol-gel science) or to be referenced as necessary by the more familiar reader.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A complete review of the mechanical behavior of ceramics
Green gives a very thorough and comprehensive introduction to the mechanical behavior, fracture mechanism and structural characterization of ceramics. As an industrial scientist, this book has greatly helped me in understanding the origin of failure in various materials and optimizing themicrostructure of the ceramic to improve its mechanical properties. Figuresand photos are concise and illustrative. The comprehension exercices at theend of the book could be helpful to the student I once was. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pitelka's "Clay:A Studio Handbook"
I have read several books (library) on pottery and technique and THIS book, for all inclusive information, beats them all.One definitely that should be in everyone's studio.Easy to quick reference.Easy to read and understand.I actuallycould visualize making forms as I read the text.It gets right down to the molecular events that happen in the kiln, things I didn't know before.Wonderful work!! Take a class, then read this book. You'll want to play with clay the rest of your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect studio handbook
This book is wonderful. It contains information on everything from properly wedging and centering clay, to how to set up your own studio and select equipment. It's informative without being so academic that it's hard to read.I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to supplement their knowledge of ceramics. I have more hands-on pottery experience than academic, so this answers all the little things I've been wondering about such as "What is the difference between earthenware and stoneware?", "How does a noborigama work?", or "What is the proper way to photograph my work?"This is the perfect studio reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone with a yearning to create three-dimensional art
Vince Pitelka's Clay: A Studio Handbook is a comprehensive, highly detailed manual on all the myriad ways to create and enjoy clay sculpture, from hand-building to potter's wheels to kiln firing and glazes, to exhibiting and marketing finished works. Written in sensible language easily understandable to the lay reader or novice hobbyist, yet covering all the material a professional needs to know, Clay: A Studio Handbook is the perfect guide for anyone with an interest in learning or improving their clay craftsmanship, whether for fun or for profit. Black-and-white photographs and drawings visually model the many styles and techniques presented, making them easy to imitate. Clay: A Studio Handbook is strongly recommended for anyone with a yearning to create three-dimensional art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For cut glass collectors this is essential reading.
Ms. Jane Spillman has done it again with her new book.Collectors of American Brilliant Cut Glass ran the price of her first large book, 'The Complete Cut and Engraved Glass of Corning' up to $500.00 before it was reprinted and this one will go the same way if it is not over printed.Itcontains a wealth of knowledge concerning the cut glass industry and therelationships between Hawkes and his competitors, particularly Dorflingerand J. Hoare. Many pattern illustrations are included, some for the firsttime, and the relationships between Gorham Silver and the Hawkes and J.Hoare firms are detailed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard
There is not a more comprehensive or up to date guide to non gem diamond, actually it could also help you grow gems. There really are some of the best authors in the business in this book. The diamond growth / reactor chapters by Butler and Bachmann justify the purchase alone. Of course, if you are serious in diamond you already have it right?5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive
This book is a great resource for engineers and scientists in the field. I have several other texts on diamond but found this one to be the best. I use it all of the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference
The industrial handbook of diamond and diamond films is the most comprehensive text on the subject of industrial diamond available. I wouldrate it as the finest available and highly recommend it. It is well thoughtout and well written. It is obvious that a great deal of work and care wentinto the preparation of the text. I have used it as a reference textextensively over the past year and it has been outstanding. This text hassaved me hundreds of hours. ... Read more
