5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the downward spiral of a once mighty company
I worked for Bethlehem Steel during the latter time period that this book covers and I knew some of the players Strohmeyer mentioned. No one could have better described the times and circumstances that brought down this mammoth company as well this book did.Unfortunately, Strohmeyer died before the bitter end of Bethlehem Steel and so was not able to chronicle it's dying moments. At 99 years old, Bethlehem ceased to exist on December 31, 2003.The company's plants and other assets were either donated to a historical society or purchased at pennnies on the dollar by International Steel Group, a newly formed steel company which successfully revived several bankrupt steel companies and merged them together into a cohesive business.International Steel Group was subsequently purchased by Mittal Steel of the Netherlands and designated Mittal Steel USA. The old Bethlehem plants continue to operate under the new owner. This book is a fascinating, easy to read chronicle of corporate blundering so profound that one wonders how the company lasted for nearly a century.Sadly, even in its last days, Bethlehem managers simply couldn't fathom the drastic changes that were needed to save the company.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sad Story... and a personal one.
Bethlehem Steel is a huge part of my family history. My mother, father and both of their fathers all were employed for many years by this once-great company.Complacency seems too mild a word for what ailed this company. This book documents the fall of Bethlehem Steel [inventor of the H-beam... predecessor to the I-beam necessary for many of the tall buildings and skyscrapers we have today].I really like this book but I am probably biased as I grew up in Baltimore, MD and Bethelehem, PA.Billy Joel even wrote a song about the influence of this company [not a pretty picture] in his song "Allentown".There's a lot of history here and a lot of explanation for why I had to leave all my childhood friends behind when the company started falling apart.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for US Industries - Now We Need an Epilogue
This was a fascinating page-turner, written by someone who was intimately familiar with Bethlehem Steel because he lived in its home town for decades, serving as the editor of the local paper. One of the best non-fiction (I almost didn't qualify this statement with that word) books I've read in a long time. Now that The Steel is gone forever, I'd love to be able to persuade Mr. Strohmeyer to write a companion volume to this one telling us just how the end came, in the same detailed analytic manner. We might be able to learn from others' mistakes. The failure of this once great company is a tragedy and is a sad example of what happens when American labor, management, and government all become too arrogant and complacent. Bye-bye profits. Bye-bye jobs. What's next? Bye-bye national defense? If steel was The Basic Industry, then everyone working in industrial America needs to read this book. Sooner or later, you'll probably deal with some of the issues raised here. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The only rubber molding source
This is the only source I have ever found for non-commercial molding of rubberlike compounds. While this 1986 edition does not address possible new developments in this area (Loctite now sells material which appears to be the same as the Devcon product highlighted in the book), it is the only information I have ever seen on creating rubber parts for the home hobbyist and restorer. The chapter on weights and volumes is valuable, as these materials are rather expensive. The metal casting section is similar to others on the market, and is primarily focused on sand casting of aluminum. This limited focus, skimming over most other methods and materials, limits it to a four star rating. If you want to mold rubber parts though, this is IT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, easy to understand.Good buy for the $11
An amateur can quickly learn casting techniques to make small and simple metal and rubber parts by followingexamples and illustrations in this book. The Make it yourself foundry equipments chapter is helpful forbeginner to start with this hobby without spending too much money. However, the main technique presented is sand casting, there is not enoughexamples or info on other casting techniques. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweeney's Books are the best
Pat Sweeney writes the best overall book for the firearms industry. His attention to detail and articulation is some of the best work when it comes to general firearms knowledge. The only other book that covers the Glock this well is the Ptooma Guide to the Glock. This book in comparison to the Ptooma book, well that is kind of hard. Sweeney writes as a general knowledge book, while the Ptooma book was written by guys that LOVE Glocks. Sweeney is a 1911 and revolver man, But who wouldn't trust the word of someone that took 3rd place in World Shoot XIV in Standard Revolver? I think he knows what he is talking about. You need a Glock book? Look no further. You found it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Author should stick to writing about the 1911
My review on this one is going to be a bit more critical than most. This is probably one of the worst books on Glock pistols that I have read to date. The author is constantly comparing Glocks to 1911's, and other types of pistols. The book is also loaded with plenty of non-Glock images. Mr. Sweeney, I bought this book because I like the Glock, not because I wanted to see plenty of photos of 1911's... ad nauseam. Perhaps Mr. Sweeney should stick to books writing books like his "Gun Digest Book of the 1911", as he has done Glock more than a bit of injustice.
3-0 out of 5 stars Informative but lacking
I made the mistake of actually reading the book, rather than skim it or use if for reference. Mr Sweeney is an accomplished gunsmith with years of experience with the 1911 and the Glock. Although he provides a lot of good information on the Glock, it becomes obvious that he truly admires the 1911. Having another, commonly used firearm to use as a reference for comparison is a good thing. But there are many times that the 1911 comes up without benefit to the topic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best in the market
This book provides the reader with a very good, updated and, for most of the topics covered, an in-depth discussion of all subjects associated with work hardening, recovery and recrystallization. Most of the physical metallurgy aspects of metal's deformation and related annealing processes are well presented, including good chapters on textures, hot working and modelling. The authors are well known experts in the field of physical metallurgy and have done a very good job. This is the best book on recrystallization available today, for both undergraduate and graduate levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers it all

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental book discovering new horizons in micromechanics
The micromechanics of random structure heterogeneous materials is a multidisciplinary research area that has experienced a revolutionary renascence at the overlap of various branches of materials science, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, technical physics, geophysics, and biology. The present book is a perfect reflection of this overlapping. It demonstrats intriguing successes of unified rigorous theoretical methods of applied mathematics and statistical physics in material science of microheterogeneous media. The prediction of the behavior of heterogeneous materials by the use of properties of constituents and their microstructure is a central problem of micromechanics. This book is the first one in micromechanics where a successful effort of systematic and fundamental research of the microstructure of the wide class of heterogeneous materials of natural and synthetic nature is attempted. The uniqueness of the book by Torquato consists of the development and expressive representation of statistical methods quantitatively describing random structures (first part of the book) which are at most adopted for the forthcoming evaluation of a wide variety of macroscopic transport, electromagnetic, elastic, and chemical properties of heterogeneous materials (second part of the book). The popular methods in micromechanics that are essentially one particle ones which are invariant with respect to statistical second and higher order quantities examining the association of one particle relative to other particles. The book by Torquato expressively reflects the explosive character of progress of the modern micromechanics caused by the development of image analyses and computer-simulation methods from one side and improved materials processing from the other hand, since processing controls the prescribed microstructure. This progress in micromechanics is based on the methods of allowing for the statistical mechanics of a multi-particle system considering n-point correlation functions and direct multi-particle interaction of inclusions, and the book presents a universally rigorous scheme of both analyses of the microstructures and prediction of macroscopic properties which leaves room for corrections of their individual elements if improved methods are utilized for the analysis of these individual elements. 5-0 out of 5 stars A modern and comprehensive treatise of material properties
I had the opportunity to use this text while taking Prof. Torquato's material science course at Princeton. The classnotes were a condensed version of the book, while the book describes all the concepts in more details. The book presents a unified treatment of the basic equations of continuum mechanics (flow, elasticity, conduction, diffusion) from a statistical mechanical viewpoint (heavy use of probability models is made), in composite materials (for example, a material with 'spherical inclusions' of a different physical electrical conductivity from the surrounding medium are added) characterized by effective properties (conductivity, permeability, stiffness, trapping constant). The effective properties are calculated from first principles via various correlation functions (Section I describes the probability functions required for dealing with random media; Section II deals with actual calculations of effective properties). To my knowledge, it is the first comprehensive book on the subject; other texts deal with smaller subsections. In some cases, these techniques were previously available only in the specialized literature. I found the many examples provided in the text to be very helpful.I also enjoyed the section on variational principles in the second half of the book; it provides further examples of how variational calculus can be applied to solve relevant problems (in this case, dealing with the optimization of material properties). Most of the theorems are proved and the proofs are short and so shouldn't be much of a burden. The chemist should know this is mostly a book on mathematics, and so does not provide numerical examples with numbers and units (however, all one needs to do is plug in numbers in the formulas), and doesn't present too many actual real-life physical examples you are likely to deal with in the laboratory. Prerequisites are simple: a bit of linear algebra, tensor calculus (but only in orthogonal euclidean spaces), familiarity with basics of probability theory (you should know what a probability density is). Knowledge of statistical mechanics is helpful but not required. There is, of course, a section on hard sphere packing for which the author is well-known for. The chapter on homogenization theory is one of the most accessible I've seen (no knowledge of functional analysis is required-- so it is perfect for the beginner). Thisbook does not have exercises or problems for the reader (it is not for the undergraduate student-- but rather for researchers in the cross-disciplinary fields), and so requires a certain degree of maturity to absorb the material. ...
