Virgina Locksmith
I have several editions of "the Complete Book of Locks and Locksmithing."They're all good.I've learned a lot from them.But the sixth edition is by far the best.I especially like the sections on lock picking, impressioning, and selling safes.

Far from a complete guide
I wasn't terribly impressed by this book - it was missing a great deal of basic information, had very incompletely coverage about such traditional skills such as picking locks, manually cutting keys, etc. Instead the author emphasises circumventing locks through alternative methods (for example by shearing off retaining bolts/screws and pulling a core). I found the coverage of large number of locks helpful for locks that I have not come in contact with, but overall I was not very impressed by this book.

Not for beginners or the curious
I'm not sure just how this book earned such high praise from supposedly learned people.Or perhaps that's the problem: they already know enough about locks and locksmithing to have no need for the basic information that is so severely lacking in this volume.Read more

Mechanic Of Materials, 2nd Edition
This book is excellent. I was educated as a nuclear engineer, but seem to constantly be drawn into mechanical problems in the power plant. I bought this book to teach myself mechanics of materials so I could develop a finite element analysis program to analyze turbine generator component stress' and strains.
a Structural PE perspective
I became familiar with this outstanding text when my son took a strength of materials course at the University of Texas at Austin. As a Professional Structural Engineer, I understood the importance of this course in the engineering curriculum. Also, I know from experience that many good students have trouble mastering the material. So I bought a copy so I could help my son by telephone. I am familiar with all the major texts in this subject including the classic book by Gere and Timoshenko and the popular text by Beer and Johnston. Review by a stress engineer
1. Emphasis on fundamentals - slower-paced in the beginning where engineering books should be. 2. Does not waste space on advanced topics such as thick,curved beams, etc. 3. Exception to 2 (above): Gives a brief introduction to the finite element method which is vital to today's stress engineer. Includes a 4-page insert of photos of FEM models. 4. Does not use complicated matrix and tensor notation. 5. Uses concepts of equilibrium. stress-strain, and geometric compatibility where possible. 6. Provides a systematic, 4-step, problem-solving procedure which includes a review of the solution (something manyengineers don't do enough) 7. Comprehensive discussion of strain. 8. Numerous examples and HW problems. 9. Comes with a CD-ROM containing an award-winning program called MDSolids which has numerous modules for problem solving of beams, trusses, Mohr's circle, properties, etc. It is the most user-friendly software I have ever used, and I have used a lot of software over 30 years. The CD has built-in examples for learning the material, but the modules also allow you to input your own problems. For example, the Beam Module allows you to break up a beam into up to 10 finite elements with generic loads on each element. Output values are tabulated and plotted for shear, moment, slope, and deflection.An added feature is that you can import values from one module into another. There are better books out there.
The book is more of a sales catalog then a handloading digest. A lot of the information is from the product sheets you would receive if you purchased the products. Little is provided on actual reloading technique. It would be better to borrow a copy or find one at a library. After you peruse it once you will not need it again.

Good for Beginners
This is a good introduction to the world of reloading.Being new, I can't tell what other important facts it's missing yet, but it is a good introduction to the basic concepts.I can't picture myself referring back to this book very often, so it might be better to look to your local library or find a friend that has one lying around.The authors gives a lot of historical data of how reloading progressed, which is unnecessary, but could be interesting to some. ... Has some good info, but unorganized
The book is somewhat helpful, but if you don't remember exactly where something is, the index will pretty much be useless. The book is also kind of hard to read/follow... I definitely wouldn't recommend this book unless you absolutely have to buy it for a class.

Help for the uninitiated
I have been using this book for my research for the past year.Over all the this design guide by Ashby is excellent.It is well written for those who do not have any background in design using metal and polymer foams.The chapters are short and concise.If, after reading this book, you want to dig deeper in the world of foam, then read Cellular Solids by Lorna Gibson.

Mediocraty at it's finest
The book isn't overall bad, but the explanations assume a strong comprehension of the subject. As for statics and mechanics, it is merely a few select cases, and fails to actually help.Several vital steps are omitted outright, so you'd be better off skipping this book, and searching for a question and answer bank. ... One of the main references for modern Fatigue Analysis
Very good book. It tackles all the main aspects of modern Fatigue Analysis. The atentive reader, following the text with a paper and pencil besdies, will extract valuable ideas for procedures. I am looking forward for books written in the same style.

Great overview with engineering data!
If there is a single book on *just* metal fatigue for your shelf, this is it. The treatment of material is rigorous without being too terse or long-winded. There's an enjoyable amount of real-world experience mixed in with the text: bits of highly relevant distilled information. Plus, there is data in the appendix that is difficult to find elsewhere (aluminum, etc).

An Overview Sort of Text

Thorough!
This book is a great place to learn the basics of Gallium Nitride and related semiconductors. I have been looking around for awhile for such a book and I thought I would never find such a book! Superb for Metalurgists...
However, it is not the best source book for mechanical design.(This refers to the seventh edition)As a design engineer, I find it most useful when finding information on CTE's and other thermal properties, and also to get a good basic understanding of a class of materials.For straight forward stress analysis, resources like MIL-HDBK-5 and the ASM References often prove more useful.If you are doing a lot of thermal analysis, or are often looking to apply exotic materials to design problems, you'll find yourself reaching for Smithells on a regular basis. ... Welding Basics
This book covers the very low level basics and should be used by people who can not tell the difference between a straight blade screwdriver and a phillips screwdriver.

Very good description about cartridges and some other important information about this topic. This book changes the way to analyze basics about Ammo.

A Very Good Reference Book
This book is a useful addition to any firearms enthusiast's library. It covers a wide range of pistol, rifle and shotgun cartridges, both modern and obsolete. The only thing that would make this book better is dimensioned illustrations of all the cartridges listed.
