The standard reference on gear engineering
One of my two favorite gear books (the other being Drago's Fubdamentals of Gear Design). The 1983 edition is thorough, comprehensive and very readable for a reference book. Surprisingly for an American book of that time, it covers the metric system and standards (ISO, etc.) used in Europe and elsewhere. While the technical standards used in the book have been updated/replaced, it is still current in many areas and lays a solid conceptual basis for gear design.
Great book at its time
This book was probably the best you could buy for introducing gear technology in 1983 (and probably still is). The only problem is that it is scanned pages from the original so all pictures are poor, especially pictures of gear failures cant be copied. At some pages there are also small white dots that covers the text but they are not so many that you get disturbed by them.

High School shop class.
Possibly a mandatory text for class, all information inside can be found elsewhere in more detail at a better price.Simple explanations.

Very Solid Basics
Very basic knowledge in this book is presented in the most adequate manner: simple, authoritative, enriched with most common useful tips. Comprises most areas of industrial mechanics' real life. Any mechanical shop could benefit having one copy of this book. Very valuable for novices and very useful even for experienced craftsmen - one allways need to recall either some safety procedure or basic working rules for area in which was not working for a while. ... Machining Fundamentals
Excellent textbook.This book has great illustrations and detailed instructions on how to do many of the setups for basic machining.Also, each section has the particular safety issues highlighted in red.Several references regarding cutting feeds and speeds to hardness conversions are found in the back.The workbook is also great for reinforcing the topics.So far the best text I have used. ... The book they forgot to proof!
This is one of those books that spends more time telling you what you will learn from a chapter than what is actually presented in the material. It also asks review questions at the end of chapters that isn't explaineduntil further in the book, if at all. Misprints are numerous and in somecases the material is just plain wrong, such as paragraph 1 on page 137which claims that figure 23-1 can be locked off for safety reasons. Even iflocked the start button would cause the motor to run if held in the onposition. Hardly a 'safe' circuit. Our school required this book as part ofits motors control course and every single student in our class is totallyfed up with the errors and mistakes as well as the brevity of explanations. ... Great Audel book, exactly what I needed
This book was a pleasure to find on Amazon.The authors cover all of the essential parts of a machine shop in a way that's really easy to read and understand.The book is an excellent reference. Great revision-must have for the toolbox!

Not Great
Let me say that the book is okay, nothing wrong with the book. But here is my question: What is the purpose of the book, the exact purpose?? I work around tools and shops so when I see a book for $110. I think it must have something new. It does not, and it is at a level where it does not really have enough information to help. It is sort of am overview with pictures and some drawings. Coffee table book on machines - so to speak.
excellent book for beginners and novices
I have the older version of this book, which was supplied to me when I took a machinist pre-apprenticeship course, and I am about to buy this newer version. Read this book in CNC Technical College

Acrobat 7 is supported; patch required
Industrial Press has a notice on their website that Acrobat 7 will now work as long as it is patched to version 7.0.5. Just an update from the earlier review which states that Acrobat 7 is not supported at all, which it probably wasn't when it was written.

the MH cd and adobe
The book is of course excellent. However the cd is anoying because the authors somehow did not make it upwardly compatable with the newest version of adobe reader (7.x). Therefore one needs to remove the latest version of adobe reader and install version 6.x . The two versions of adobe reader are not allowed to exist on a windows system at the same time.

Machinery's Handbook Edition 27
This book is the industry standard for engineering and manufacturing data and calculations. The included CD allows the entire book (plus extras not in the book) to be viewed with Adobe Acrobat from a computer. Unfortunately, it can only be run from one computer at a time due to the online registration process. They were kind enough to give me another code so I could also run it from my laptop. Definately a must for geeky mechanical engineers and the like. ... Read more

Not enough examples
I am a an engineering student with a gpa of 3.93 (73 hours). I have found this to be one of the least helpfull books I have ever used. The examples worked are at such a low complexity level, that they do almost no good for solving the problems at the end of the chapters. There are entire concepts that are missing explanation and you can only hope that you will have a good enough proffesor to explain during lecture. I do not have that luxury, mine will only go over the illustrated examples in the book.
