1-0 out of 5 stars Bloviated
Agonizing drawn out overview, with little depth.
1-0 out of 5 stars An annoying verbiage
I was interesting in buying a professional publication relative to piping engineering and, by chance, I was able to borrow this book from a technical library before doing what can not be undone.2-0 out of 5 stars poor book
I Buy this book because needed references, general conditions and good practice to solve practical problems of pipes. However I meet with a tangled book, of little clarity and that in general it doesn't embrace the practical topics well referring a lot to the existent norms. Anyway it serves like support to the different norms to go developing a project but alone as reference and in any case like a book of easy access to solve problems on site or the day to day problems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Machinery's Handbook (Large Print)
Delivery was fast and arrive in A1 condition. As a design engineer this book is invaluable in day to day operations. Being a bit older the large print is a plus for me. I have older editions of the Machinery's Handbook but periodically it pays to update to the current book. It was also the best price I had seen on the net.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great but not perfect
This book is great, it includes lots of information, many examples and real case studies that show you how these concepts can be applied. There is a ton of information in this book and defiantly a great source to have for reference.I did get a CD in mine, and seems to work just fine.
4-0 out of 5 stars No CD ROM and Nowhere to be Found on Net
Book is worth the price. However, there in NO CD ROM included with the book, and the directions given at the front of the book regarding where to download the software is incorrect.Neither the author's nor the publisher's websites offer the software for anyone except professors adopting the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Design Engineers
This book covers all the fundamental issues related to bolts and bolted joints. It is very easy to read, and does not go too deeply into technical subjects, but gives the reader a full appreciation for the issues involved. As a materials engineer I appreciated the section on bolting materials. Asa design engineer, I found the sections on designing bolted joints veryhelpful. As Plato expressed long ago, the wiser you are, the less yourealize you know. After reading this book, design engineers not familiarwith all the issues will likely not take bolts and bolted joints forgranted. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Very Disappointing Book
This book is a huge disappointment. The cover is modern and promises a high-quality treatment of an interesting subject but the inside is ridiculously simplistic and leaves an awful lot to the reader to figure out on his own.The extremely abbreviated text is arcane and the "pictures" are no more than primitive line drawings. In many cases, this is woefully inadequate to understand what's going on.This 1868 book belongs in the "Antiques" section. It was a huge disappointment and simply annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing!
I work as a Mechanical Designer/Draftsman and a Home machinist. Both of which I have a degree in, This book is worth every penny. It is interesting, detailed, handy! Although small it is packed with interesting sketches. I must warn anyone interested that this book is intended for the heavily mechanically inclined.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book
This book is fascinating! Originally written in 1868 it briefly presents 507 different mechanisms with a graphic for each. When I first received the book my first impression was that it was too small to be much good. Indeed, I think it would benefit from a total reformat devoting more space and detail to each mechanism. However, as I looked further I saw that there is JUST adequate size to see everything. (The formatting has obviously changed since the original which leaves wide spaces above and below each page. It occurs to me that they should be good places for making notes.) The illustrations are numbered and correspond to the text on the facing page. The drawings are simple and beautifully done in the style of the time (nineteenth century). The text is very short and to the point but again just adequate to the job of describing the mechanism.

5-0 out of 5 stars The new, new testament
This book is a must have for anyone in the crane industry, I train crane operators and the information is an invaluable resource which covers all aspects of cranage. It is well set out and concise, it covers everthing from basic safety principles through to complex engineering solutions. Save yourself some money in the long run by owning this book & teaching your operators and planners from the lessons learned by these guys. Your equipment will be preserved & costly mishaps will be avoided.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent-
Good overall technical writting,5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, authoritative text on the subject
Well written, using language easily understood by the average technical reader with an interest in the field ( unlike many engineering tomes in my experience ).Also unlike many texts, proofreading and editing are skilled and thorough.Shapiro ackowledges in the preface to the first edition the roles of his co-author sons as "militant proponents of the clearly expressed thought".The success of that effort is obvious.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An effective guide for new line design
This book gives a new insight about the PROCESS and shows some ways to optimally design it with minimum wastage. The concepts described here is not just limited to the manufacturing process but extends to any other business process. Consideration of the resources in Man , Machine , Workstation and Inventory sets a well-defined boundary of constraint for designing new production line.
1-0 out of 5 stars From a Lean Manufacturing Engineer
This treatment of Lean Manufacturing is written from the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) viewpoint. The center of the manufacturing world for the production control dept. is the MRP software which makes this viewpoint on Lean interesting, especially since two of the major advantages of implementing Lean is to reduce inventories and to eliminate production control department overhead. The only requirements for MRP in a lean environment are long term raw material scheduling and finished product delivery scheduling.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lean Secrets
It is very unusual when a consultant reveals their secrets to implementation concepts. Dennis Hobbs tells how to implement lean on a step by step basis. The secrets of kanban calculation in addition to line balancing are exposed. This book is a critical resource for companies interested in conducting their own lean implementations. Dennis provides detailed explanations and not just lean stories that fail to get to the real issues of how to implement the concepts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book content value
This volume contains the most comprehensive list of mechanicalcomponents and variations on any given theme that I've seen in one place.Additionally there are significant extensions to computation methods and overviews not found elsewhere. It is an extremely high value book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Must
The last few favourable reviews cover my thoughts well, but I would like to add that this large volume far exceeded my expectations in terms of both depth of content and quality. This is an amazing value for anyone who works with mechanical components. While its focus is on illustrations of the components themselves, it also includes detailed explanations with graphs, formulae, etc. So it's also a how-to book of sorts. I also purchased a companion volume "Mechanisms and Mechanical Devices Sourcebook", which I also highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific book
Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components has lots and lots and lots of line drawings of machinery components. The drawings are clear and simple. Each is accompanied by a well written description, usually a few lines but longer if needed. An interesting book for anyone mechanically inclined. For engineers there are tables and formulas where needed.A great book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, easy to read and follow
I have to agree with the other reviewers, this book is very handy, and easy to read.It covers quite a lot of ground for a pocket manual, which is great.5-0 out of 5 stars A classic reborn!
Audel books have been around forever, but I could never find a revision, at least not of this really well-known book for my toolbox. I had an old copy, but it was really out of date. I'm recommending this new one to all the other guys in the shop!

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference source

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs Improving
I used this text in an elective on electrical machines and found the book very difficult to learn from.Readability is not bad.The writing is fine and easy enough to follow but the equations in the text were frequently the wrong equation for the topic.Several tables had eroneous information. While most text books contain some errata, this book contained more than any of the dozens of engineering books in my personal library.None of the end of chapter problems had any answers in order to check work. While only a nuisance, example problems in the text would reference a machine from several chapters back, requiring the reader to flip back and forth to understand the situation of the current example.I did appreciate the fact that the book includes matlab examples and exercises as to aid understanding with simulations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete without being difficult
This book may be considered a reference in the study of electric machines, because it brings the main aspects of electromechanical energy conversion devices without being difficult to understand. Its way for explaining therelations of power/current/torque in induction machines is the best oneI've seen in any book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Electric machinery easy at high level

4-0 out of 5 stars Generally Good Information
As an owner of the second and third editions, I found the second edition's physical qualities (paper, printing quality, etc.) to be better than the third edition's. Mr. Messina is mistaken when he indicates that my previous review was based on the second edition. I had ordered (through Amazon) the book on a waiting list and got it shortly after it was published. It is sitting next to me as I type. The second edition is in my office.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pump Handbook, 3rd Edition review
I can't confess as having read the whole book as it is very extensive, but from what I've read so far I can provide the following review. 5-0 out of 5 stars Pump Handbook
Handbook is a term which implies comprehensive coverage of a given subject, so often a term which is misapplied. Not so in this case however, this book is without a doubt one of the best sources of information on pumps and related system components currently in print. For anyone requiring a comprehensive pump resource, this is it. I would definitely recommend this one for the engineering library. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Machine Shop Trade Secrets
This was not the worst book, and not the greatest either. It has some good hints but no real head slappers. I would have preferred that it went a little more into depth in a smaller number of areas. It scrathed the surface in a wide variety of areas, but did not really cover any of them well. The pictures were very good to help understand the text which if you are not familiar with machine shop lingo was hard to understand some of the time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for thinking out of the square
I'm a consulting R&D engineer and this book is virtually never on the shelf. Someone always has it on their desk, browsing through it, just soaking up ideas.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sclater's v. Parmley's books
I bought the largely similar books on mechanical components by Sclater and Parmley. Both have drawings of similar quality, to the point of having identical drawings in a number of cases (presumably because both authors used the same third-party source for the particular topic). A very few drawings were disappointing, but most were very good indeed -- and even the disappointing drawings probably would be fine for most engineers (I am not one).
5-0 out of 5 stars Mechanisms for visual learners
Because I am one of those 'visual learners', this book is ideal for me. The concise text in this book accompanies a very nice graphic or two -- both greyscale and line art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes you remember why you became an engineer in the first place
This is a textbook for mechanical engineering design and also a reference book for practicing mechanical engineers. It is assumed that the reader has had courses in statics, dynamics, strength of materials, and material science. In other words, it is assumed you are the equivalent of at least a junior undergraduate in mechanical engineering.
2-0 out of 5 stars A broad book, but lacking in details
The book covers a broad range of problems in machine design but lacks clear explanations and citations.Often times in sample problems the author's solution skips crucial steps or fails to cite information. The section on fasteners is lacking as well.It neglects to mention counterfeit fasteners and their implications in recent years. It also does not mention AN or NAS fasteners.Too many coeficients are taken blindy from charts which are not cited. This makes the problems in the book little more than blind "plug & chug" type problems. One might expect this from a first or second edition high school book, but not a fourth edition college text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
If you're a mechanical engineer who deals with mechanical assemblies, you must have this book. It was used as a textbook 10 years ago in one of my college classes, and I sold it back, only to re-purchase it later to use for my job. There's really no substitute.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not for study...... maybe good reference
This book has a lot of tables and formulae which can be applied directly to specific engineering design problems, but I have not ever learned mechanical engineering design subject. I need comprehensible and easily viewable explanations and figures to understand the basic concepts. Information in this book looks just a sequence of data with not well-organized instruction. 1-0 out of 5 stars Hope they proof read the 7th edition!
If this book wasn't so full of valuable information, I wouldn't have given it a single star. The proof reader slept through this edition. There are more errors than I could have ever imagined. They sometimes refer to the same variable by different names in succeeding paragraphs! Many times they leave off critical subscript identifiers or don't label important values in the example figures.Small errors crop up all the way through this edition.Hope they fix the Seventh! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mathematics for machine technology review
Temple College in Temple, Texas was awarded a $600K Grant to update theskills of the workers in industry. The math skills of the existing and newemployees are exceptionally low. The difference between normal math as Icall it and the aproach of the "Mathematics for MachineTechnology" is that the students do not know where to apply the maththat they have learned. With Mathematics for Machine Technology the aproachis applied mathmatics. This math is applied every day in the industry andnow the math becomes functional. This is a great teaching aid to use byitself or to complement the math that is now being taugh. I bring measuringinstruments such as verniers, caliphers, micromenters and others into theteaching enviroment to stress where the math is used. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great kinematics, poor everything else
When it came to the other sections of the book, it seemed to lack much information.a prime example is in the gears section.if you did not read the book in chronological order, you would not understand later chapters.example if you were interested in worm gears, and you didn't read the spur gears section you would be completely lost. For this reason i would say it does not make a good book for reference as it may not be clear if you will need to do some hunting later.
5-0 out of 5 stars A classic which a passionate Mechanical Engineer should have
This was my textbook in my undergrad and which I cherish having around me. Gives a comprehensive treatment of kinematics uptill the level demanded for a practising mechanical engineer. ... Read more
