5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best Reference - From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control

5-0 out of 5 stars InstrumentEngineers Handbook Vol1
Excellent book. I second Mr. Hills comments, although I have recently purchased the books based upon comments Mr.Liptak has made in the control mailing list. It is a very good investment. The book is easy to read/understand, covers the full spectrum of instrumentation, give relative costs and companies manufacturing the items. It is a good first book to turn to, and will save me much research time. I wish I would have known about it earlier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the advanced field technician.
I have used this book for years and it has never failed to provide the information necessary to troubleshoot and repair problems with measurement systems.Liptak does a wonderful job presenting measurement theory and theprinciples of operation of various measurement strategies. The mosthelpful information Liptak includes is the discussion of the limitation ofvarious measurement devices. If you are responsible for the maintenance ofa wide variety of instruments and you desire to know how those instrumentswork, this book is worth every penny. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Compendio completo... tal vez demasiado
Overall, the book is helpful. It starts off discussing the general pavement types, design methods, and roads tests.Included in this section are the results of findings which, although not something I consider in everyday design, are items that are interesting enough to promote thought in my designs. All in all, I found almost all the chapters useful as they cover stresses in flexible and rigid pavements, rigid and flexible pavement design, drainage design, pavement performance, as well as a few other issues.5-0 out of 5 stars pavement analysis and design

5-0 out of 5 stars Only book which consolidates Audio coding & Standards
This book describes the basic details and the Signal Processing behind the Audio compression. It also describes PQMF and MDCT in continuation which is rare in books. Almost all the standard audio codecs are described with comparisons. I am delighted to read the book. At least my search end with this book on this topic. After getting this book, I need not look into IEEE & AES papers. For Audio engineers working on this domain should read this book to have a complete picture and overview of the technology and the domain.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not satisfying for a nerd like myself...
The book gives a good review of the historical development of audio coding standards with emphasis on ISO. Generally speaking it is well written, but the technical details as well as theoretical aspects are frankly, quite superficial; therefore it is not satisfying for a (proud) nerd like myself. If one's goal is to implement a program to handle the MP3 bitstream, for instance, then the book does not help. If one's goal is to design a new filter bank to improve the MP3 coder, then the book does not help either. However, it is recommended for beginners to get a flavor of the audio coding field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching the core mechanisms underlying digital audio codec.
For a long time in my school life and now as a audio engineer I look forward to this kind of book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on Audio System Engineering
This is THE BIBLE on sound system engineering. You'll find no better reference for sound system issues in an easy to understand book. This is not for the novice who knows nothing of sound or physics or math. It's for those that truely understand basic concepts and want to learn "how sound works".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mid level text
We've used this book as both a historical reference to get our folks up to speed, and the material is still pertinent to predictive analysis today.I've been using it since the first edition and find it a useful part of a complete acoustics library.

2-0 out of 5 stars High expectations low return
Very esoteric, helpful if your having and argument about the physics of sound....Old, out of date pictures and test instruments. Some of which haven't been around for ten years. Very little practical information, you read and read and read looking for some practical conclusions.Absolutely FILLED with mathematical calculations. I'm not put off by these but they are out of balance with there usefulness. This books seems like it was written to fulfill someones PHD requirements. There are some useful chapters on electrical or speaker basics but they seem included only to bring this book down from outer space. ... As soon as I received this book, I started realize the price is great compared to what the book is offering. 2-0 out of 5 stars Disservice to students and insult to experts
It's understandable and forgivable when the first or even second-edition of a technical book has some errors. However, when a book has reached its third edition, one should expect a relatively error-free and comprehensive reference. This book is an insult to the scientific method and to the tenets of decent technical writing. Considering only the part of this text that would be covered in a first course in continuum mechanics, even a cursory inspection reveals major theory errors as well as lazy typesetting, grammar, and editing issues that simply aren't acceptable for books in this price range. For instance...5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is the best text that I have found for introducing continnuum mechanics and tensor notation to students. I have used this text in both Continuum Mechanics and Elasticity courses. Very clear explanations andexamples to make the student proficient in conntinuum mechanics. I wouldlove to see it expanded to include metric tensors and Christoffel symbols.

5-0 out of 5 stars A recording studio masterpiece
OK, so this does not cover ALL acoustincs. If one is interested in recording or playback acoustics, this is THE BEST. As an engineer and producer who has been involved in the construction of a dozen studios, I have the clients and architects read this before we start hard design parameters. For lay listeners, the chances are good your audio budget is better spent on acoustic treatment rather than a more exotic cable. For all of the above, this book will explain the what, why and how to get results. For professionals, it explains how to obtain designable results. I find it an easy read, and I refer to it occasionally, particularly when discussing room acoustics with neophyte "sound men" and audio engineers. I'd read it if I were you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Have you got time?
Despite its title, this book should better be called Master Handbook of Room Acoustics, as it is primarily and almost solely dedicated to the acoustics of enclosed rooms. With its over 600 pages you will need a large hand, and plenty of time to read. But the information you gather when reading the main text, could have been presented in less than half the number of pages. Despite - or is it because - the abundance of words and excursions into anecdotes, the explanations are sometimes missing the clue. The last few chapters have been written by others authors, and are more to the point. Besides, these co-authors use the SI system, while the main text is using American units. A bit out of time, I would say.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clear explanations
I agree with all reviewers about this very comprehensible book. I do not agree with the title. The introduction to acoustics is general, but the applications only deals with musical aspects. This restriction is of course valid but should be reflected in the title which now suggests, in by perception, to cover a very wide scope. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely delightful reading!
Highly informative. A few aspects need to be updated, though. I'd buy a second edition without any hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
I bought this book at the Kennedy Space Center Space Store and at first thought the cover and title looked sort of juvenile. However, once I started reading it I couldn't put it down! Mullane answers so many questions I didn't even think to ask and answered questions I had in my mind while touring NASA. This book enriched my NASA experience and I feel so much more knowledgeable about what astronauts experience. His writing style is as lighthearted and accessible as it is thorough. From explaining how astronauts have to work the toilet system on shuttles to how they are chosen to be an astronauts to facts about the Challenger tragedy, the simple question/answer format makes it fast reading and easy to go back and peruse. Published in 1997, I wish Mullane would update it and add more, but this is such a good introduction to the whole shuttle experience, I won't complain. In fact, this book has given me a better understanding of the current spacewalks on the space station and the Cassini spacecraft that just reached Saturn's orbit. I can easily see how this book could be very inspirational for a wanna-be or don't-yet-know-they-wanna-be astronaut, as well.5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, informative, easy-to-read, candid, and detailed
People who read FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions, a common format to provide information on Usenet and the web) will find the style of this book familiar and accessible. And so, I think, will a lot of people. One of the best things about this book, besides the amount of ground it covers, is its suitability for a wide audience. Its simple language covering a wide range of subjects will appeal to everyone from children to adults, from people with a cursory interest in space travel to people obsessed with it.The book comes with recommendations from Neil Armstrong and James Lovell, as well as several less famous (but not necessarily less experienced) space professionals.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical
Working your way through the more theoretical books on explosives by, say, Cooper or Zukas and Walters, is fine, but you will be left wanting for a simple, practical guy's knowledge of explosives technolgoy.Cooper's Intro book is the book for you.You might even want to start with this book before going off to the more advanced books. If the math is lacking, the essence of the theory is fairly well captured by Cooper's exposition, and there are plenty of photographs, figures and tables to help you get the ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating Systems Safety Overview
In this book, Nicholas Bahr has taken the complex discipline of systems safety and made it accessible in a logical, useful format. The book is clear and well illustrated (although a couple of the charts are a bit cumbersome and unwieldy), and calls upon numerous case studies to illustrate key points. There are separate chapters of Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Safety Analysis in Engineering, and Safety Management. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for the student and the experienced professional
I used this book to teach system safety engineering to graduate students. The author provides the reader a background into system safety that lays the ground work for a functional and proactive system safety process.Thisbook provided workable examples to the student for comprehension of thematerial.Students as well as the instructor had a better understanding ofsystem safety and the integrationof the processes into general industrialand avaition safety programs/processes. I wish I had this book when I wastrying to explain to my management what system safety engineering was andhow it benefits the engineering department. ... Read more
