2-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing AutoCad LDD
I did not care for the book. I did not feel it was written very well. It does not "read" well and is difficult to understand and follow the examples. I suppose, it is better than nothing and I keep it around as a reference only. Also, hardly and time is spent on the survey module only 1 example is given on runnning traverses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fully Comprehensive and an excellent reference.
I have more than five years using third party Acad applications for land development and I found this material systematic, well organized and easy to follow. The examples provided ( CD included) are sequential to the lectures which makes it an excellent didactic tool.On the other hand, the text does not cover the possible, or most common, types of reports that can be generated with the program in its differents applications.3-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing Autodesk LDDT2i
The overall organization is quite good..., however, if you have been using LDD for a while and have accessed the online help to learn the program, you may find much similarity in syntax. If you are new to using LDD, then it is worth the price of the book. Keep in mind though, if you need to pick up the overall working mechanism of this LDD software and civil design in general in a rather short period of time, you best bet may be going to an authorized learning center.(No, I don't work for anyone of them.) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I will read this again.
Just finished Tertzakian's book... its quite good, just a bit `engineerish' though definitely a company man's view. Especially sobering is the chart half way through showing the effect of a 5% world oil production decline (depletion) coupled with rising world demand; satisfying both will be difficult.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well-researched, topical history of the world's oil dilemma
So many books lately have touted the looming energy crisis that a new book on the topic bears a fairly heavy burden. It must demonstrate a firm grasp of prior scholarship, yet be innovative enough to serve a distinct purpose amid similar tomes. In this regard, author Peter Tertzakian achieves the first objective nicely and comes close on the second. He shares his keen sense of how the impact of energy sources has rippled across history and altered its course. He discusses the concepts of "energy cycles" and "energy break points" to explain how inherent mismatches between dwindling supply and growing demand lead to crises that can be resolved only by innovation and "rebalancing solutions." Upon closer examination, though, the "break point" seems referential to the familiar notion of a "paradigm shift." And, alas, the author's menu of alternate energy choices is no more satisfactory than anyone else's. Given his historical acumen, however, we find that this book is a useful addition to the expert chorus warning the global citizenry to wake up and smell the petroleum.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wide Ranging Overview of Energy
Tertzakian provides a useful, historical, and wide ranging look at all the world's energy sources. He starts with the stories of how 'rock oil' replaced whale oil for lighting and why Churchill converted the Britsh navy from coal to oil even though Britian had lots of coal and no oil. In a graph of US oil comsumption plotted against real GDP he shows the dramatic and permanent impact the 70's oil price increases had. After a chapter on the search for oil and the implications of dwindling new finds of oil, he speculates on how the world's energy mix will need to adjust to the upcoming peaking of 'light sweet crude' by the development of "alternate energy supply chains" like liquified natural gas and the Canadian oil sands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, sophisticated, unconventional classic
George E.P. Box, the senior author of this magnificent example of great teaching for adults, is one of the great statisticians of modern times. He is a master at teaching those with experience, especially industrial experience, but not necessarily the most advanced mathematical training. My own background in econometrics and decades of work experience left me in a position of having too little knowledge to apply sophisitcated statistical methods to experiments and too much knowledge to settle for the exposition of statistics in many experimental design texts, especially those for behavioral scientists.I had read some of Mr. Box's "Evolutionary Operation" [with Norman Draper] ("EvOp") (also outstanding, practical, and unusual) and looked at "Bayesian Inference in Statistical Analysis" [with George Tiao] ("BISA") and hoped the book was as practical as EvOp rather than as mathematical as BISA.It has turned out to be so without being unsophisticated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book, but you should buy the newer edition, not this version
All of the reviews on this book are generally consistent in their praise for the book and the authors. I do not have any points to add to the discussion other than this:
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the 2nd edition of this over Montgommery's Book
I used the Montgomery DOE book as an undergrad...but chatting with a Stat prof freind of mine..she recommened Box Hunter & Hunter over this.I had never covered the entire book..& was reading up on Factorial designs...I went ahead and bought Box Hunter & Hunter...(do wait & buy the 2nd edition due out in May-I think Amazon trys to sell you the old inventory if you are not careful)...nonetheless, the old edition I bought actually is much more intuitive and easy to follow that the "Design and Analysis of Experiments" book by Montgomery....I think its b/c the latter is written by an engineer..no offense to you out there...just that engineers cover so much material that there texts seem more "cookbook" like..here's how...w/ no too much intuition as to why ...probably catering to the engineer who has not the time to care about the why...I am thoutoughly enjoying the read...some of the quotes in hte book are pretty funny yet all the while relevant... ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Thorough Examples & Explanations
This book was required for the DE classes at UTexas for a first/second year student, encountering DE's for the first time. The book is very comprehensive in teaching all aspects of DE's.However, the book is very dry and difficult to get through. The worst thing is that is impossible to get through this book without some supplemental material. For examples, the book uses proofs instead of examples that can be applied to the homework several times. In addition the examples on countless occassions are like it can be shown through some simple calculations(which they won't show you)(it skips steps) that you can get to some other formula and you're like how did they do that?In addition the notation/symbols they use are not defined all the time, and this leads to extra confusion when trying to learn something new.Overall the examples are vague.

1-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most convoluted book on the topic
One of the many problems with this book is the order in which the topics are presented.Right off the bat, They decide to put linear equations ahead of all other types of DE's.Are they really as simple to solve as seperable equations? The entire second chapter is a complete mess and is very disorganized. The forumla for the integrating factor of linear equations is difficult to ascertain, and it is never clearly stated (it's there, but their notation is convoluted).I don't want to sound like someone who is just having difficulty with the math taking it out on the innocent textbook.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but not the best...
I think this book is the best among the standard "undergraduate" textbooks for diffeq--i.e., the ones with flashy colorful covers that are re-released in a new edition way too often.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Do not buy this book.It has absolutely no detail and states only what you can already figure out using common sense.I wanted help replacing the carburetor on my 1989 Honda Accord. The book says to remove hoses, connections and loosen the mounting nuts and lift out the carburetor and then install the new carburetor the same way the old one was installed---that's it.No help with hose diagrams or information about how to disconnect or reconnect anything. Also, the carburetor won't just lift out---it is necessary to loosen the manifold to get the thing out.The book doesn't even mention that.As I said, the book is useless.I wouldn't have given it even one star, but I had no choice.

1-0 out of 5 stars awful
confusing, no detail.... You cannot wirte a 276 pg book for 10 years worth of 2 different cars...There are no pictures and often little detail on what you are supposed to be looking at...Maybe a good, i mena good mechanic could use this book, but no one else...

4-0 out of 5 stars Has its moments and applications
I own both the Chilton's manual and the service manual and I use them almost an equal amount when working on my '92 Accord.Yes, the Chilton's doesn't contain as much model-specific information as the service manual, but at times the service manual is too technical and difficult to follow. That's when I turn to the Chilton's manual.IMHO it's well worth the price. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An old fashion approach to reservoir engineering
This is one of the traditional textbooks of reservoir engineering that has survived the pass of time because of its undoubtful quality. The book has a considerable number of solved and proposed exercises and the subjects are presented in a manner very easy to understand. It was originally written at the time in which material balance calculations were the basic algoritm used by reservoir engineers to characterize hidrocarbon reservoirs. As such, this book is organized in terms of the material balance equation: it goes from material balance applied to dry gas, the next chapter is about material balance applied to gas-condensate, then undersaturated and so on, until all diferent fluids are covered. A variety of procedures to do the material balance calculations are presented, many of them of little or no usefulness today and definitely not even mentioned in modern reservoir engineering courses. Important topics such as PVT are dispersed in all the chapters. Other such as pressure testing and inmiscible displacement are covered without adequate depth. Numerical simulation is not even an entry in the subject index. In summary, if your interest is to read about material balance methods in reservoir engineering, this is the book to pick. If you are seeking a general view of the subject then there are better options.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides excellent intuitive explanations
While Gallager is lacking in mathematical rigor and in typeface aesthetics, it is a superb book for understanding the intuition underlying the theorems. Sheldon Ross's book is more rigorous but does not offer as much intuition. The two books together make an excellent team.

2-0 out of 5 stars Must have prior knowledge
This book is being used in my graduate class. It is very condensed to the point where many mathematical expressions and arguments are squeezed inside the paragraph rather than being stated on a separate line. As a student I believe this book is of little help without prior knowledge of stochastic theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth having!
Although the aesthetics (print, figures etc) of the book leave something to be desired, this is definitely a book one can get a lot out of. Gallager's treatment of the subject matter favors simplicity and his thought process is usually easy to follow. Occasionally one finds less than water tight proofsbut all in all this is a great addition to the bookshelf. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Instrument Flying
This book is good if you have your instrument rating, but it is not set up for trying to learn the techniques. Most of the book assumes that you know what it is talking about, but it does offer an entire chapter of a glossery.4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner, Ok for the experienced
When I read this book I was already through with my instrument training, it does contain many great tips and is a very fun quick read. However, I wish I would have read it earlier in my training, the description of the book says it's great for both beginners and experienced but I found it to be written for too large an audience and was left hanging on certain aspects of the book.Overall I did enjoy the book and can see it being of tremendous value to someone who has become rusty, for those that are already sharp this is not a necessary read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for ALL pilots.
Taylor delivers strongly in this timeless book about IFR flight.Whether you are a strict stick and rudder pilot or a more procedural and technical pilot the author clearly spells out the basic premises of instument flight, from the cockpit to ATC.It should be required reading for all students seeking their instrument rating; it was for me.Please take note: this is NOT a complete guide to IFR flight.Rather it is helpful in understanding and reviewing the basics. This should be one of many books read when getting one's instrument rating or CFII. ... Digital signal processing has been around for a long time. Only since 1995 however has the price/performance ratio of sensors and processors been good enough to allow extremely sophisticated devices using DSP to become consumer items.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This was a good book but out of date on many topics. It is a great all around reference or start-up and go book. I decided I wanted to learn about cars so I found this book at a tag sale and now I know the basics. I wouldsuggest this book for its no-nonsense and in-depth approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for motoring enthusiasts.
I'm an automotive engineering student and I use this book as a reference. It provides information on virtually everything on or related to a car, tools, brakes, suspensions, fuel systems, just to name a few. Besides that,it also provides service and diagnosis information on every system of thecar it covers. The language used is simple to understand, and yet blendswell with layman's terms. There's also a dictionary on automotive terms inthe book. Recommended to motoring enthusiasts and automotive students. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Another too much and too little guide book.
As is usual with books purporting to enlighten you on the use of software, this book covers a great many subjects. The problem is, there is not enough depth on any of the subjects to help much if you are already a user of the program. If you have a detailed question, the likelihood is you will not find the exact subject addressed or if it is, the coverage is perfunctory. For example, the material on Gantt charts is less detailed than you will find in the help menu, so why bother with the book? If you have advanced far enough on your own to ask this type of question, chances are you won't find the answer either place.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book was written for a programmer.
I am a programmer myself who didn't paid too much attention to MS Visio previous to my encounter with this book. Like the previous poster, I can "wink" my way through Visio for a fairly decent drawings, part of the reason for this is because I have worked with programs like Corel, Photoshop, video editing programs, Dream Weaver, Flash, etc, where I had to worked with various drawing tools, layers, rulers, zoom etc. Then suddenly I was offered a nice job with a well known IT company, and the position requires me to use MS Visio extensively.
5-0 out of 5 stars Boy, this sure opened my eyes!
I just had my eyes opened to all that Visio can do by reviewing the book Visio 2003 Bible by Bonnie Biafore (Wiley).

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and thorough book
This book is one of the best for introduction to Discrete choice models. I had been using Ben-Akiva & Lerman, but feel this book should be read along with that one for a better understanding of choice models. Also, Train covers recent advances in the field and provides a good introduction to Halton draws. He really makes sure you get the concepts and the online lecture series are really excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best of its kind. Good for MS students and up
-Enjoyable read
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent discussion of what the models mean
If I could give this book six stars I would. It's simply one of the best statistics books I've ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice
I am a Vocational Professor at Amarillo College in the Computer Assisted Design department.I have used different editions of this text for years to teach the MicroStation courses in our department. He covers basics thoroughly and provides excellent exercises using practical working drawings. My advanced course includes customization and 3D topics, all of which are included in this text.I recommend it highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing MicroStation/J(tm)
Harnessing MicroStation/J is an adequate learning tool for beginners, but suffers from a lack of advanced topics.Several high level features are not even mentioned, ie. b-spline curves and surfaces and plot tables.Theindex is very weak. The few entries that are there, use obscure programnames for features, instead of common subject names.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic practical introduction with emphasis on calculations
Chapter 1 introduces basic concepts in electricity such as charge, voltage, current, resistance and Ohms law.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good book
it's definitely one of the best books I've found in this field. It's complete and the most of the arguments are explained in a very easy way. There are many exercises with solutions -very useful- but unfortunately the book doesn't have all the results of the exercises.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy!
It's definitely for first year's students. But its title is very attractive and exagerrated. I have sent it back and taken my money. It's not worth a cent..Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK IN THE SUBJECT
This volme I have purchased yesterday from the local Book Seller. I had gone through first three chapters. Since I am teaching Biochemical Engineering to my Undergraduate and Post Graduate studentsfor last three years, I understand this volume is very much helpful in addition to some volumes I have in this subject like, Biochemical Engineering by Humphrey, Aiba and Millis (Academic Press), Fundamentals of Biochemical Engineering by Baily & Ollis (Mc Graw Hill). However, in teaching the tutorials in this subject, an instruction manual consisting of solution of unsolved problems given at the end of each chapter of the book would be very much helpful. I have collected a such instruction manual (solutions to unsolved problems given in the Fundamentals of Biochemical Engineering)(Gift copy) from McGraw Hill Publishing Company . I hope any such volume might be available for Bioprocess Engineering by Shuler and Kargi. If so, I would appreciate for detail information and way to procure it. It will not only help the teacher but the students as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but has glaring flaws
This was the book for my introductory bioprocess engineering course. I felt it covered the quantitative areas, such as enzyme kinetics, bioreactor design, stoichiometry, etc.., quite well. However, the qualitative sections, such as DNA replication, metabolic pathways, and cell function, etc.., are explained way too quickly and lightly for someone with little or no training in Biology. Upon reading a few pages into one of these qualitative sections, you quickly find the author throwing terms at you that he never defined (to be fair, it would take an extra 100 pages to define all of these terms). Also, the text has some really unfortunate typos, typos so severe they may actually hinder your learning (subscripts change for no reason, two different constants given the same symbol, etc.) Biology folks will be happy, but ChEs with no knowledge of Biology may want to stick to the section on bioprocess engineering in Fogler.

4-0 out of 5 stars I should need a little bit more
I have read the book at a stretch. In my view, the thesis (human is social) is a very simple, wit, and sound one. Maybe it is a very profound concern to us, whose complete consequences have not yet been taken in a serious consideration. Foundations and arguments in favor, coming from social and computer sciences, are orderly and properly unfolded along the book. The associated web page is being a very valuable resource for me. In short, I have made acquaintance with a good, satisfying mate. There is only a but for me: It has not moved me (but that is my but, not its...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good science; not metaphysics : know the difference; win big
You are most likely familiar with the story. In summary form, it is about a group of blind men standing around an elephant each declaring "what an elephant is like" based upon which part of the elephant they are touching -- and elephant is like: a wall (side); a tree trunk (leg); a hose (trunk); a fan (ear); and so on.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could have been more concise.
Swarm intelligence is burdened with an awful lot of material that is not core to PSO.A great deal of the book consists of the philosophical ramblings of the authors, rather than technical treatment of the topic at hand.An even larger chunk of the book was devoted to what was essentially a survey of AI: neural nets, evolutionary programming, heuristics, etc.Much too much space was devoted to grounding the reader in AI before proceeding.I must admit, however, that, while I found it out of place, the 'AI primer' part of the book is one of the most useful and lucid I have seen;I just think that it should have been a separate book (and this one should have been much thinner). The material that is specific to PSO is a very small fraction of the book, but is thorough and accessible;there really are few alternatives if one is particularly interested in PSO.However, if you are just interested in emergent behavior, and its applications to AI, take a look at Ant Colony Optimization (Dorigo). It covers ACO, rather than PSO, but is more more readable, and provides a much better technical treatment of the topic, if you want to avoid the philosophy and primer. ...
