5-0 out of 5 stars Hi level book.
The book is keystone for those involved in FEA. It covers all the aspects of Finite Element formulation of physical problems, thought in a more coincise way with respect to , say, Zienkiewicz work and in a less prosaic way. As with many other FE books, the level of mathematics involved in the book is quite high, especially if one considers the non linear finite element formulation for continuum mechanics. Even though the book is mainly intended for structural engineers, it covers fluid dynamics and heat transfer topics. The section I mostly used was the one regarding solution methods for FEM problems: here, Dr Bathe makes a really nice job (about 150 pages). There's a code at the end of the book, it's a FORTRAN 77 one, but one can translate it into a more modern language (I guess we all should get the rid of FORTRAN 77....).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent finite element text
This is an excellent text for students and practioners alike. The presentation is brief and to the point and focuses only on algorithms and techniques that have been proven to work. The problems are excellent and can only be solved if one understands the essence of the techniques presented. There are many textbooks on finite elements but none so thought provoking as this one. Definitely a must read!

3-0 out of 5 stars Review on microsystem design
The book tries to cover many different topics at the same time and sometimes makes a quite messy work. However, the book has very good chapters and not so good ones. It provides a good introduction on MEMS fabrication, but a more interested reader will find difficult to fabricate MEMS with the given information. Chapters 5,6,7 and 8 are excellent, but chapters 9, 10,11 and 12 are incomplete and not easily understandable for a Electrical Engineer graduate student. Chapter 13 begins with general equations to be simplified considerably later, giving the impression to the reader that he has learned only a little about fluids. Chapter 11 is quite confusing and chapter 12 lack examples in 2D and 3D lumped models. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for PLM Project team
We got 4 books on PLM for our project. This cost most but was best value. Lots of details about reasons and benefits for PLM, how PLMs evolving, helpful hints about how to run the PLM project, how to make the business case. Good case study examples, a maturity model to help positioning, explanation of difference between PDM and PLM, stuff about how and why people may resist. Lots of good material, lots of details, useful different views of PLM. This book is well structured and is a useful starting point for manufacturing organizations looking to implement PLM. It provided us with good direction and ideas and challenging questions to answer. Recommended reading and source of discussion and decision for a PLM Project team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for Product Lifecycle Management
Great source of PLM Knowhow. I like the overarching way PLM is treated with all 5 phases of the product lifecycle included. Product idea, product definition, product realization, product support, and product end-of-life. This is cradle to grave plm, not only product development. The focus on the product is timely as manufacturers rediscover that product is king. The text is crystal clear, concise and complete. It has everything from PLM vision and PLM strategy to nuts and bolts of PLM implementation. Its holistic approach includes processes, applications, information and people. It is the most comprehensive PLM book I have seen. This book is a PLM reference before, while and after PLM is implemented. Great reading for a PLM Director, Director of Product Lifecycle Management, PLM Manager, PLM Project manager, PLM/PDM manager, PDM Manager and anyone else into PLM whether its with Agile Software, MatrixOne Matrix, UGS TeamCenter, SmarTeam, Softech ProductCenter. Useful links to web site www.johnstark.com and 2PLM ezine, a weekly zine about product lifecycle management.

5-0 out of 5 stars read this for a successfull PLM implementation !!!!
Its about time a book like this came along. Sure it has strengths and weaknesses, like any other book. Read it for its strengths. But beware of its weaknesses. A weakness, it takes over 400 pages to describe all PLM. A strength, its the only book so far that covers 'real PLM' and not just a slice of PLM. Another weakness, its definition of PLM, 'PLM is the activity of managing a company's products all the way across their lifecycles in the most effective way' is more strategic than many others, this isnt weak-kneed departmental PLM for file management. Next strength though, this robust definition holds good over 400 pages and all the product lifecycle. A weakness of the book is it doesn't have the usual diagrams of PLM seen in many glossy marketing brochures. A strength, it has a set of slides you can build on to make your own presentations. A weakness, Stark the author doesn't offer a quick fix or a quick plug-in technology solutuion or a quick read. A strength, Stark's approach to PLM is innovative, far reaching, complete, business-oriented. A strength, Stark shows great understanding of what all manufacturing companies have in common, and uses it wisely.I see two main uses for this book. Long-term, on the PLM managers desk as a PLM reference. Short-term, great introductory reading for all members of a PLM implementation initiative. This will get them tuned up for a strategic PLM project. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Strength and Applied Elasticity 4th Edition
Many Engineering text books lately do not seem to be written well.I feel that this is not the fault of the authors as much as it is the fault of the editor. This book overall is not in my worst text book list, but can be improved very easily.I have given it a 2 star rating, meaning that it still can be improved upon and until it is improved it is a difficult book to follow.4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect
First few chapters are well treated but advanced topics are not covered in detail. For example, beams on elastic foundation chapter is not covered extensively. To conclude, anyone interested in advanced mechanics of materials should own it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Practical
As an Aerospace Engineer (structures), I found this to be the one book that remains on my shelf. It has valid and accurate ACEDEMIC explanations of structural systems - but it does not lend itself to practical implementation of those methods...and many other books do! If this book is supplementing a curriculum, it will serve its purpose well. However, if you actually plan to use what you've learned - not here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference work for the professional maintenance engineer
This book contains over 1500 pages of figures and often dense text. It is the only book of its kind that I know of written clearly for the degreed maintenance and facilities engineer. This book is an edited work by several dozen authors who are all leading maintenance practitioners and experts in their field. The book covers both management and technical issues associated with the maintenance of the modern physical plant.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Go-To Reference for 30 years
I began using Design in 1968 when I was in the USAF as a Civil Engineer. The wealth of information compiled by Mr. Seelye is staggering.Even though some of the materials are archaic, the formulae are timeless.I find the tables and nomographs particularly useful for quickly checking the work of my consultants.I've found it useful and I'm sure any Civil Engineer will as well.It would make a great graduation gift for your favorite CE.Computers will need upgrading but this book won't.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book for practical engineering
I bought Seelye's book on design in 1971.I am sure that it has gone through some updates since, but for the last three decades it has been a ready source of quick usefull and practical engineering data.Granted, an in depth design problem will require other references and checks of current codes, but there is plenty in Seelye's book to find a direction and to solve "shirtsleeve" problems.4-0 out of 5 stars Broad range of detail and hard to find info, with calc's.
This is a collection of years of work detailed by a civil engineer dealing with many types of materials and projects. His formulas and charts are well documented with an excellent index. Great for structural and generalcivil engineering type of work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book content value
This volume contains the most comprehensive list of mechanicalcomponents and variations on any given theme that I've seen in one place.Additionally there are significant extensions to computation methods and overviews not found elsewhere. It is an extremely high value book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Must
The last few favourable reviews cover my thoughts well, but I would like to add that this large volume far exceeded my expectations in terms of both depth of content and quality. This is an amazing value for anyone who works with mechanical components. While its focus is on illustrations of the components themselves, it also includes detailed explanations with graphs, formulae, etc. So it's also a how-to book of sorts. I also purchased a companion volume "Mechanisms and Mechanical Devices Sourcebook", which I also highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific book
Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components has lots and lots and lots of line drawings of machinery components. The drawings are clear and simple. Each is accompanied by a well written description, usually a few lines but longer if needed. An interesting book for anyone mechanically inclined. For engineers there are tables and formulas where needed.A great book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Every sentence radiates vast experience
This book is exactly what Ralph says (pXV): "a concise but thorough ready reference for Requirements Analysts (RA)". Every sentence provides sound advice and radiates Ralph's vast experience with the subject. I advise Requirements Analysts to read it through and then to read pieces of it again during the ongoing RA activities. Use it as a checklist before starting an activity, and when analyzing why a certain activity went wrong, to see how you can improve, and went (accidentally) right, to see how you can improve even further.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this book is missing. For a comprehensive listing of integrals, there is no better book than this. Remarkably easy to find a desired integral, if the book covers it at all.

Trying to save the day, I went to my linux machine at work reading "Your operating system, Linux 2.2.19-7.0.1, is not supported by this software. It appears that the software is only suitable for some SUN and SGI machines. It only appears to run properly on a windows machine. 1-0 out of 5 stars One word to describe this book: ripoff!
The book claims you can build all projects with standard components. However, every project contains at least one component that can only be ordered on the website of the author! No details about those components is provided to force you to buy it in his shop and make it almost impossible to find it somewhere else. Also, the claim that all projects can be built for less than 100$ is an outright lie! Most projects are very expensive.
1-0 out of 5 stars What a RIPPPPPP!!!!
Ok....we bought this book for the physics club so we could build some cool gadgets and what not. I completely agree with the other peoples review that the author just plugs his website through out the book. WHAT A RACKET!!! He GROSSLY underestimates the cost of building each product. For one of them called the "Two inch spark tesla" thingy...he says that it is a fun expirement that will cost approx. $25 dollars.....So he then goes on to list some parts needed for the project. Most of them are pretty easy to find. But three of them are not...they include a 400V square wave transformer, TWO 25Kv Pulse transformer, and a 300V SIDAC switch....now all these parts are very very very hard to find...(Dont count on radioshack or even your average electronics store carrying these things)...so i went on amazing1.com and i will copy and paste the following prices from his price list...
5-0 out of 5 stars High Voltage Science Fair Projects that will Terrify Your Competition
The projects in this book read like a list of weapons used by '60s comic book super villians. There are many projects here that are quite interesting and should produce interesting effects that can be observed in the classroom or other demonstrating environments.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner....Not for advanced
This book is truely for beginners who have no clue of signal Integrity. He starts this book with stuff like Ohm's law and how capacitors and inductors work which most people learn in high school.
5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most readable book you'll find on this
Brook's book is exceptional in the clarity of the writing, esp. in explaining key concepts that most engineers are fuzzy on.This book is great at giving engineers an intuitive feel for basic electromagnetics and how it relates to signal integrity and emi.4-0 out of 5 stars A chasm has been bridged...
As an educator, lecturer and practicing designer I am given many books to read and make comment on. I find very few books that are able to bridge the chasm between the needs of a beginner learning about signal integrity and the needs of a professional desperate to solve design problems. This book is an excellent primer and reference for understanding the interrelationship between the board layout and the signal integrity problem. This book details design solutions to classic signal integrity problems and educates the novice in understanding the reasoning behind the solutions. There is a lot of nonsense being written about signal integrity and few people have the resources to filter out the chaff from hay. This book proves every principle presented with tested board layouts, demonstrated engineering principles, or documented laboratory results. Some people can see the world in formulas and some see the world pictorially. This book is rich in both forms of expressionism and its presentation will not exasperate the PCB designer who sees the world visually, or frustrate the engineer seeking equations for design representation. This book has been added to the required reading list for our PCB layout designers and product development engineering teams. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Faulty approximations and poor "folksy" presentation
The book was a major disappointment given the previous "5 star" rating and high price.I quit reading the book after 56 pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment of auto-focus techniques from the leader
This book describes the PGA algorithm which is used extensively in all modern SAR systems. A clear and broad treatment of SAR processing. This should be the first SAR book you reach for. It's nice to read about algorithms from the originators for a change. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book
This book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis (mainly statically determinate structures) and then goes on to the design fundamentals for different materials (wood, steel, concrete and masonry)followed by the design of the structural system for a building.I firstused an earlier edition of this book when studying for my undergraduatedegree as an introductory book before reading the course texts. The presentedition maintains the "easy to understand" explanations of theearlier edition while adding new materials, expanding other sections andupdating the design methods in line with the building codes. Emphasis isplaced on understanding, the explanations given are very clear and thereare numerous worked examples to illustrate the principles. The book isexcellent for the beginner first getting used to structural analysis anddesign or for the practising engineer who has not touched structures for awhile and wants to refresh his memory. However this book is only the firststep and the undergraduate or practising engineer would do well to followup on thiswith other more specialised books like Wang and Salmon's"Reinforced Concrete Design", Salmon and Johnson's "Steelstructures: Design and behaviour", or Halperin and Bible's"Principles of Timber Design for Architects and Builders". ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book by Colonel Wm. T. McLyman
I wish I had this book many years ago....Since it answers many design problems I have already figured out the hard way, through lots of grind and sweat... At this time I don't really need the book, but intrigued how the Colonel approaches magnetics problems in the same manner I approach them...
5-0 out of 5 stars Among the best foundational material for magnetics design.
Wether you are an engineer, technician, or just an interested layman, this book will take you from the grass roots understanding of basic magnetics all the way through to some fairly advanced topics. Among magnetics engineers, I have found it to be one of THE BEST for properly setting up foundational knowledge and theory.Too many engineers have weak or incomplete foundations and quickly hit a plateau where they can't go further until they go back and really understand the basics. If you buy one book, buy this one.The other two books I would recommend of this caliber are no longer in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Buy it!
This is probably the best book on transformer design that I've found. It's geared towards the engineer who actually wants to design a real working transformer. The text is comprehensive, and the discussions are inteligent and easy to follow. There are tons of real word examples. As I was reading this book, there were many times when the lights went on in my head, and subjects that where previously a mystery, became crystal clear. There are so many poorly written books out there on this subject that it is a real pleasure to come across a book so well written. ... Read more
