5-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction
I had never used matlab when I started reading this book and I found it very easy to follow.I now have a good working understanding of the matlab basics and I recommend that anyone who's looking to get started with matlab pick up a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect introductory text for MATLAB
If you are completely new to MATLAB then you will find no better book to guide you through the basics. It is perfectly suited for teaching yourself several basic but still very interesting and useful programming techniques.Topics are presented to the reader in an order carefully determined to produce maximum benefit and knowledge. The book is short and very readable, with many example programs.
5-0 out of 5 stars A truly excellent text!
This book was written for teaching Matlab to freshmen in an introductory engineering course, so most of the examples are from first year physics and engineering.Nevertheless, after looking at all competing texts, I chose it to teach Matlab to sophomore geology majors, most of whom had not yet taken calculus or physics.I was very happy with the results; by the end of the semester the students were well on their way to being competent programmers, and I think they will find calculus and physics much easier because of their experience with this book.

Useful in many of my process definition tasks. Essential text for any System Engineer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent SE text and reference
I have just completed the JHU program in Systems Engineering. This book is the foundation for the curriculum and is a very readable, solid overview of Systems Engineering. All phases of the system life-cycle are introduced and tied together to truly illustrate the process. The book focuses on processes, the tools used will change, but good Systems Engineering will stay the same. The process to derive good requirements that are able to be implemented and tested are the same regardless of technology or field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on estimation/Kalman filter
I don't usually write online reviews but this book is so clear and useful that I really want to recommend it to others. It is well written with a good outline and summary for every chapter. It also has a pretty diverse range of topics on estimation, including an introductory chapter on basic estimation approaches (e.g., ML, MAP, least squares), and very practical extensions (e.g., state augmentation, square-root filters). Even though I am not in EE and some of the examples are thus not particularly helpful to me, I still find this book one of the best of all the estimation/Kalman filter books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars best standard book for target tracking system
I think any person who major in target tracking system related to the Kalman filter must see this book. This book present the fundamentals of state estimation theory and the tools for the design of state-of-the-art algorithms for target tracking. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The fountain pen bible
This is it.If you buy only one book on fountain pens, or if you are serious about fountain pen collecting, this is THE book to get.Unfortunately, it is Really expensive.Look around for a used copy using the usual suspects on the Web.The photos are great and the captions clearly identify each pen shown.Numerous non-US pen companies are written about and many pens are pictured here and nowhere else (in other standard pen ID books).Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars A verbose tome that scratches the surface
Compared to the online help, this book reviews favorably. But Revit is a deep program, and to really use Revit efficiently and fully takes more than an "intermediate" book will offer, which the Aubin text admits to being. I say the text is verbose because, for instance, it always refers to Revit as "AutoDesk Revit Building", which gets very tiring. The book introduces Revit by designing two projects, which is nice, but a lot of the useful information is hidden in little sidebar tips, which makes using the book as a reference (for instance, as a command reference) difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Autodesk Revit Building
I purchased this book because of the favorable reviews I read from this site. I wasn't dissapointed...this book delivered. I just recently got hired by a major architectural firm that uses Autodesk Revit Building. My background is Autocad ADT 2006 and have no idea at all what Revit is all about. Two weeks prior to my start with this new firm, I bought this book and diligently went through all of Mr. Aubin's tutorials every night. Now, two weeks into this new company, I am even, if not more advanced, with all their employees (they took the transition to Revit ten months ago)! On a few occasions, I had some questions pertaining to the book and Mr. Aubin had graciously replied promptly to these inquiries by email. If you're not yet using Revit, then you're missing a lot. This is the future of CAD. And if you decide to switch, this book is a must! Thanks for a great book Paul!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Buy it
If you need to learn or support those who are learning Revit Building, you can not afford to miss this book. Paul has a way with his writing that lets you get right to what you want to do. Whether you want to learn the basics or dive deep into advanced material Paul has it all. I've read other authors of autodesk products and felt shortchanged compared to Paul's indepth and easy to read methods. Do yourself a favor, buy this book and you will see that it will pay for itself many times over. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hoodwinked!
This book cost $108.00 and is full of errors. The instructor of my Intro To Control Class has contacted the publisher but to no avail.I am struggling in a course that I have always wanted to take and although my instructor is fanstastic this book gets a big fat F- from me.This book has failed and I hope that anyone who is forced to pay for this book isn't stuck paying full price. It's just not worth it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Another high-priced clunker from Thomson
This book was used in my "Fundamentals of Electricity" course in a technical college air-conditioning (AC) program. It was selected because it was the only text specifically for AC.We used the first third of the book.I'm an older student, have two years of university credits, and have seen a lot of technical and vocational training material. This book is simply awful.I have never had to struggle with a textbook so hard as with this one.Grammatical errors were abundant. The review questions were poorly written.Illustrations were occasionally mis-labeled, out of sequence or just plain wrong.Where the material raised a question, it was often left unanswered, but unasked questions were answered in excruciating detail.I had to use 4 other books to fill gaps left by this one. Most insulting was the price: $108.There are better books that cover basic electricity, some aimed at HVAC.I used Proctor & Mazur's books from ATP to fill some gaps.Additionally, ARI's "Refrigeration and Air Conditioning" has a good treatment, which is clearly written.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic refererence for your HVAC/R library
I love the way the author set this book up.You gradually build on what you learn and never really feel that you are being thrown in to hard. The writing is fantastic. Not to difficult in technological terms for the novice and yet levels with the seasoned veteran just right. When you complete a chapter , you are introduced to a " In the field scenario" service call. You imagine yourself at the call working out the problem in the component. You see how to step by step, use the common sense approach to troubleshooting and gain good skills in those procedures. The calls vary from simple to very complex. One thing is for very certain. You will enjoy having this book in your professional HVAC/Rlibrary. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
I find this book to be a very handy reference.Sometimes the equations get very involved, but I do like the way the material is presented. The font is kinda wierd (newest edition), but thats just a subjective thing for me. I also like the design section in the back, and the depth of information on design considerations is neat.Including this book, Swanson's analysis book is another good addition for joggling your memory on composite analysis that you took in grad school. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not half bad
When I took a composite materials course as a senior at NCSU, the teacher didn't.In a fit of desperation, I went to the bookstore and looked at all (3) composite books. This one used the same symbology as my prof's lecture notes, so I bought it, despite the price.3-0 out of 5 stars composites-trends

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners and transfers
Despite some of the negative comments on this book, I bought it anyway. The remarks that this is not a reference manual is unjust. Chapman never claims that the book is supposed to be a reference manual, so don't expect one. The book is written for those who begin to learn Fortran 95 or want to upgrade their skills to make the transition from Fortran 77.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for modern programming
It is outrightly silly to rate this excellent book one star and insinuate that it is a terrible write-up. Is it the thin index that makes it so bad, or the explanation of do loops using sin(x) series expansion, according to the first reviewer? If you are a scientist or an engineer (the target audience of the book) you'll probably see the wisdom of such an example instead of counting from 1 to 10 as if we are inside a grocery store.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible as a reference.
This is probably one of the worst programming books I have ever used. The index is terrible, which turns finding any random info into a page by page scavenger hunt. There are very few tables which give nice breakdown of parameters and what not, as the author prefered to scatter information about a single function call through two or three chapters. The "scientific and engineering" aspect of programming is so spoon fed it really does nothing to enhance understanding of the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Specialist
With an exception of Chapter 1, this book is well written, well organized with logical flow of subjects, and having practical example for every chapter's sub-topics. I found most of these examples are simple and very supportive for the understanding of mathematical expressions and that link the underline subject with real-world application. This book, in my opinion, is an excellent text for science and engineering students as well as for scientist or professional engineer who wants to achieve his or her self-study of the fundamentals of probability and statistics.
5-0 out of 5 stars The 6th Edition is among the best I've seen...
I don't have the 7th Edition, but the 6th Edition is helping greatly. The explanation of concepts are crystal clear and the examples make sense, are well explained.

4-0 out of 5 stars Here's what the last 28 years have brought to you
I am now reading the second edition of this book, printed in 1978. That's right, 28 years ago. It is a low-cost Collier Macmillan International Editions copy and the paper is, naturally, yellowish. This is a simple printing using only black fonts and gray boxes for definitions and theorems. Can you imagine a book on Statistics without pink, red, purple, green, blue and a few other colors popping into your eyes from every corner of a page?! I bet you hardly can. Well, texbooks used to be this simple (and affordable) before most of today's college students were even born. Take for instance the chapter exercises, which are all answered at the end of the book. That's right, all of them have answers. Not only the odd-numbered ones. I guess the editors in the seventies weren't smart enough to come up with the best way of liberating students' pokets from the occupation of the mighty dollar: don't provide the answers in the book but print a Student Guide instead. I saw that even the newer editions of this book use this approach. As you see, it wasn't always like this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Boom, Fling, Bang, What fun!
Silly me, I used Ether starting fluid in my first potato cannon. That is downright dangerous. But this was prior to having a nicely written book with several projects that I didn't even think of. I haven't tried any of these projects yet, but they have been carefully thought out with safety in mind. The author also gives interesting backgrounds to the projects. I wouldn't want to be "hoisted with my own petard" as Shakespeare wrote. I'm going to wait till winter with a snow cover before attempting the fire kite. Great stuff! I recommend this.

2-0 out of 5 stars insufficient for all levels
I found this book to be inadequate at all levels. It does not go into sufficient detail for beginners, and neither does it provide rigor for the experienced controls student. Do yourself a favor and buy separate texts for the basics (like Brogan's Modern Control Theory) and for the advanced.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Up to this time, there are no 5 stars books in Linear Systems. However, this book is one of the best 4 stars books available for the subject.Through the book, the author sometimes assumes that you know or understandsome topic, formula,...etc. without mentioning it. However, you can do it,but it may take you some time to figure out what it is. If you are goodenough in linear algebra you will have no problems to handle the book up tothe last page. Chapter 2 & 3 are the most important chapters in thebook because they prepare you for the rest of the book. MATLAB is beingused in a nice and helpful way to visualize some concepts and applicationsof the linear control theory. I recommend this book as a textbook for anintroductory linear systems course and also for self teaching purposes.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad, and the Insufficent
My overall impression with this book is:satisfactory.Though there are a more errors then desired, and a few that are pretty confusing, the majority of the book is accurate and very instructive.I would recommendthis book as a reference for introductory treatment of Linear System Theoryand DI just completed this book in the beginning of March.Having aControls background I found this book both helpful and instructive, yetlacking in sufficient detailed explanation on some tough topics.Chapter2: 'Mathematical Descriptions of Systems' was very helpful with thedetailed definitions and easy examples. Chapter 3: 'Linear Algebra' is achapter that could use expanding. Some of the topics addressed in thissection are speedily discussed and rapidly completed. The first edition ofthis book was chided for it length. This edition must be chided for itbrevity. However, when lack of explanation abounds, examples and homeworkproblems can make up for deficient instruction.Chapters 4 through 6 areeasy to follow and through in their treatment.Chapter 7, however, isanother chapter where too much explanation was removed. The examples arehard to follow in this chapter, and there are a few very confusingmistakes.Chapters 8 and 9 are very well written, though confused attimes. However, they yield a sufficient knowledge of the addressed topics. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive introduction to the field
This text is the best introductory book available, it is comprehensive and will serve the reader as a reference throughout his/her career. The authors have made a significant contribution to the field with this text and will help many biomedical engineering programs and their students.

3-0 out of 5 stars Errors make it hard to learn
I've used this book now in 2 classes (including one taught by an author of one of the chapters) and have both times found the book hard to use.It is full of so many small errors you can never be sure whether the problems you are having are because you don't understand the material, or if there is another mistake in that section.Very frustrating. The problems are not limited to explicit errors either, there are issues with the presentation that makes me think it was poorly edited as well.Style, order, and omission of important points are among the sins. Some sections are pretty good, though.1-0 out of 5 stars review of biomedical engineering handbook
subjects are old and out of date. For example, modeling of the eye, (...).This books seems like an attempt to introduce you to the research of a few professors who are trying to recruit graduate students.I found little educational value in it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Documentation
I am a British Chartered Engineer working mainly in Blue Chip energy-related companies. I have just started using this book in my work and find it strongly re-enforces my passion for excellent documentation and design management. It is clearly the current 'bible' forEngineering Documentation Control and is extremely valuable in showing how to climb the 'Configuration Management Ladder' (page 8). It cuts away the dross and complexity that is plentiful nearly everywhere else. So many of us technologists and managers are struggling with hugely powerful new computer packages that integrate most processes in our companies. This is one of the very few books to chart our course and give us a chance of a reliable way through to simplicity, speed and profitability that are so often promissed but so rarely fully attained.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Industry Configuration Management Resource...
...but not for Software CM.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Inroduction to CM
Unlike the vast majority of books available on configuration management, this book, as the title suggests, focuses entirely on configuration management in industry.Throughout the book, the author focuses on a simplified, fast configuration management system that exceeds DoD standards. This book, in the chapters titled Change Control and Fast Change, has an exceptional explanation of how to handle configuration modifications. In these chapters the author gives a detailed description of how to set up a system that allows the fastest possible changes to take place. Also, many case studies are given in these sections which provide further insight as to how to implement the correct system for a given situation.Overall, the book is very easy to understand, and serves as an excellent introduction and handbook to a configuration management system for industry. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good follow-on reading after Goldratt about CCPM
While not a devotee of critical chain project management (CCPM), I embrace several features of the approach.
2-0 out of 5 stars 7 pages of errata - RIDICULOUS
There are 7 PAGES of errata for this title. http://www.artechhouse.com/GetBLOB.asp?Name=leach%20errata.pdf
5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition Provides and Excellent Overview
If not the actual father of CCPM, Mr. Leach is at least the midwife who has championed its cause, written the book, given the talks and done more to bring it to life than anyone else. In this new book, the second edition, updates and expands on the first edition based on new research and on feedback from readers.
