4-0 out of 5 stars A significant rallying cry for Geographers, who appear academically lost in 'space'
Those earth systems scientists involved in global change modelling, andgeographers willing to dab at policy, would benefit from examining Lovelock's pedictions for thefuture state of our planet as we fail to stop carbon emissions. The most significant part of the book (for a geographer): Lovelock predicts climate change will force mass migrations as portions of continents rapidly become inhospitable to our species.
5-0 out of 5 stars Seperating Scientist from Environmentalist
Excellent book which really pushes the urgency of global warming based on science. It's too late for sustained development. The case is made for nuclear power and how that might be the only technology that can save the planet. A must read for a scientific view of man's damage to the planet -- not an environmentalist view.

5-0 out of 5 stars winter
There are many wise people sounding warnings but no one of great consequence making an urgent stand and bravely attempting to lead the essential battle. Terrorism is the thorn of a rose compared to environmental catastrophe. We should fight to save the world with a religious zeal. But where is the call to arms? Al Gore needs to run for president because the prophet of doom role, really, doesn't do anyone any good. Knowledge doesn't keep you alive. I rather see humanity make a mistake trying to rescue the planet than take no action at all. Why is everyone asleep? What then shall we do? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Worthless
Caldicott has not changed. Her approach to nuclear energy is list some emitted radioactive isotopes of a process or perhaps some barely probable radioactive emissions. She neglects to mentions the doses are almost invariably minute, do not harm human health, and are way below radiation doses provided by mother nature.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nuclear Power Is Not the Answer -- The Title Says it All !
Dr. Helen Caldicott, has written another incredible book!In her magnificent book, Helen shows us:
5-0 out of 5 stars The Case Against
In this book Helen Caldicott covers a wide range of issues involved in the nuclear debate, the many core people involved, both pro and against, and the scientific studies available. She explains the history of and the technology involved in nuclear power in detail and discusses 'green' technology alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will make you think
This book is an incredible read. I highly recommend it for anyone who is concerned about the environment and their own health. This book contains a lot of research, which contributes to its credibility, however it is far from your typical scientific book. It's a fascinating read for anyone, whether they have a background in biology or environmental science or not. I actually read it as part of an extra credit assignment for one of my college classes. My original intention was to skim the book and write a summary. I became so wrapped up in the book that I literally read it cover to cover - including the forward and the afterward. I later purchased my own copy. This book is both challenging and fascinating. Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars eye opening reality
A great, easy to read arguement that we are creating our own demise to profit in the short term. Theo has had a daunting task and put together the pieces of scientific evidence into a timely work of art that questions the side effects of our daily practices.I'd love a sequeal for personal and corporate change that would, of course, only slow the possible outcomes of our daily lives and of thosewonderous creatures which have no choice inhabiting and inheriting the tainted sphere with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars An alert for us to heed now and to prevent further damage ..

2-0 out of 5 stars Geohydrology
After reading the first three chapters, I found serious errors and deficiencies in Chapter 3, Basic Geology and Hydrology.Although not relevant to design, the authors should know the earth's crust is 0 to 20.5 miles thick as opposed to 40 to 130 ft. thick. The discussion of soil classification systems recognizes the USCS, AASHTO, and USDA sytems, but only discusses the USCS and AASHTO systems. The highway and airport pavement driven AASHTO system is of little relevance to groundwater flow. The USDA system is commonly used and received no discussion.Although the chapter discusses the differences between unconfined and unconfined aquifers, the aquifer properties section is incomplete and confusing as to what properties apply to unconfined aquifers, confined aquifers, or both types of aquifers.Last, the example for Darcy's Law demonstrates a lack of understanding of the basic principles of groundwater flow. The example on page 45 presents an ERRONEOUS answer of 669,500 gpd, where the correct answer is 200,640 gpd.The author's incorrectly used the flow velocity rather than the Darcy Flux or specific discharge to calculate flow.Futhermore, their calculation of pore water velocity requires a discussion of apparent porosity. If one were to use their method of calculating flow, over calcuation of flows would be in the neighborhood of 200-400%.

4-0 out of 5 stars Design of Remediation Systems
It is a good design guideline of this sort in remdiation engineering since it was written from designer's perspective with real examples and spreadsheets for data recording and analyses. However, it would be even better if it included more theoretical background on vapor extraction testto help designers compare with groundwater unsteady pump test theory. There is a minor error in page 216 that motor HP is considered a fuction ofmotor's efficiecy. Motors are usally rated as output HP. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chapters survey not just techniques but political pros and cons, social effects, and environmental impact
Kicking The Carbon Habit: Global Warming And The Case Of Renewable And Nuclear Energy doesn't adopt the usual focus on cutting oil consumption: instead it focuses on reducing coal use. Coal-fired plants produce over half of the electricity in the US, accounting for some 40 percent of the country's greenhouse gasses. Sweet doesn't advocate a singular path of change another unusual feature but proposes a mix of environmentally sound technologies from wind power to nuclear reactors. Chapters survey not just techniques but political pros and cons, social effects, and environmental impact.
3-0 out of 5 stars Been there, done that
Oh...where to begin. This book had so much potential and, to my great chagrin, just fizzled.Ok, let's start with the positives. The author, Sweet, is an excellent writer and could undoubtedly make an expose on the finer points of watching acrylic latex dry, seem fascinating. His style is light, well-paced, to the point. In fact each chapter, as he nearly hints at in his introduction, is separately readable in any order and sounds exactly like an article that might appear in IEEE's Spectrum magazine, to which Sweet is a notorious contributor.Unfortunately from an editorial standpoint, this book left a lot to be desired.First of all, more than half of the book is related to a brief history of climatologists' attempts, successes and failures, to come up with a foundation for and later, a workable model of global warming viz. a viz. greenhouse gases/carbon, etc. That's fine, but for the price of this book, I think I'd either like less history and more solutions, or a proportionate amount of solutions...meaning a much larger book.Since the technical aspects of 'kicking the carbon habit' were probably not the focus of Sweet in the first place, then he should have dispensed with all that history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you've seen the movie - read this book
Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth" and his book by the same name have focused a lot of much needed attention on thetopic of Global Warming due to Green House Gasses. In "Kicking theCarbon Habit" eminent science journalist William Sweet provides not only an in-depth analysis of the reality of Global Warming and its causes but a practical program for the United States to take signifigant actions toward averting an impending catastrophy.Mr. Sweet is not an alarmist but I and every thinking person should bealarmed.Despite what the nay sayers and procrastinators may claim this book proves the "Science is In", the "Time is Now" and there is a way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, yet Concise Book on Waste Management
This is a really good book that I had to purchase for my graduate level Haz. and Waste Management class. My professor, Dr. Reimers, is THE top man in the country for Activated Sludge use, etc. I thought that the book would be boring, but I really learned a great deal from it. We had to do select homework problems from each chapter (some of which our teacher required a lot of detailed answers for), which weren't that bad. Overall, this book comes highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars designer's reference
Although this book is geared towards upper level engineering students, I found it extremely beneficial in my research as a graduate student in architecture.Architects and landscape architects interested in reclaiming the post-industrial landscape will find it to be a clear and concise guide to contaminants and remediation technologies.

3-0 out of 5 stars A plug for ERM - pure and simple!
The titlle of the book implies that it has much to do with hazardous waste management, although in reality, it is more about remediation or site cleanup.Classic hazardous waste management deals with the MANAGEMENT of hazardous wastes within an industrial setting and how NOT to let it get into the media in the first place. In this regard, while the authors had the right intention, they fell short. For example, the chapter on environmental auditing was very weak and not given much attention, which is really at the heart of hazardous waste management. In addition, a troubling issue that took away from the book was the blatent self-promotion of ERM in the book, beginning with the foreward by Paul Woodruf, ERM's CEO, and the profuse listing of ERM self credits from editing to graphics.Who really authored the book, the authors listed, or ERM? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good review of basics
I bought this book, studied it, then took the EPA test and was universal certified. My average score was 94. The book's strengths are the many practice questions and practice exams in the appendix section. The questions did a good job reinforcing the reading material. The only drawbacks are some of the dateand regulation (DOT and CFR) questions. I had only a few date questions and no regulation questions on the EPA test. I also think the book could do a better job explaining low pressure systems such as chillers. Overall though, I'd say this book did a good job preparing me for the EPA exam.
