3-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Information, Riddled with Typos and Omissions
I have been using this text in a wastewater engineering course. It covers the different aspects of wastewater engineering well, providing in depth treatments of each. However, the great size of this book (over 1800 pages) may also be its weakness, making it an unmanageable project for the editors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bible of Wastewater Engineering
This is the bible of Wastewater Engineering.I'm currently a student studying Civil/Environmental Engineering and every professor I've talked to in my department has recommended this book for any type of Wastewater Treatment Plant design. If this book doesn't have the information you want (unlikely), the WEF MOP might.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE FOR ALL SANITARY ENGINEERS
I can't stress enough the value in this text.Like my title states this is a must have for all sanitary engineers. The book covers everything you must know concerning wastewater treatment written by professionals working in the field.I would hope some day that they publish a book on pump stations and sanitary sewer design as well.I think that they would also be on the top of the list for these areas as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Doing Well by Doing Good
Green to Gold is a must-read for anyone who (a) holds a leadership position in business or is a business influencer, and (b) cares about the environment we live in.Its subtitle really best describes the book, which is probably the first (or if not, certainly the best) documentation of successful corporate environmentalstrategy on the market.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!I'm already looking forward to the sequel.
When a colleague suggested that I read this--my gut reaction, after just finishing a graduate degree, was that I was not going to cuddle up with a potentially bland business book. After holing up in my apartment for 48 hours, that all changed.A half dozen phone calls had gone unanswered and I had one heck of leg cramp. I had not only finished "Green to Gold", but was enraptured by it--and thankfully freshly emerging from a slight fog in my professional career.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a clearly articulated guide for the mainstream businessperson
In Green to Gold, Espy and Winston contribute a much needed voice to the conversation about why businesses will all ultimately transform themselves for sustainability, and why the smartest ones are moving now to develop shareholder value and a competitive edge through strategic environmental action. The authors lend a distinctly rational and grounded perspective on real issues business leaders must face today, and how they can turn challenges in to opportunity for innovation and success. This is the best starting point we've seen for beginning to think both strategically and tactically about what steps you should take going forward, and forms a fantastic framework for discussion both internally, and within your value network about how to catch this next wave of innovation.Highly recommended. This book will certainly have impact on speeding the pace of change. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Environmental Chem Text
I took a web-based environmental chem course, and this book was used in lieu of lectures. The author does an outstanding job of presentation and the text is very well-organized.Includes a lot of current information. The problems within the text are very challenging and reflect real world issues (i.e., PCB concentrations in the Great Lakes) My only criticism is that the chapters are sometimes overly long. Other than that, this is one of the best E-chem texts I've come up against, and I certainly learned more from it than I would have from listening to a prof lecturing for a term. Recommended highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good presentation of a broad topic.
I am also a chemistry student and I found the book to be rather easy, but that is because the text is very clearly written with good presentation and concise wording. It is certainly a good place to start in trying tounderstand an environmental problem, especially if the readers backgroundin chemistry is only on a general and limited organic level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, easy to understand
Environmetal chemistry is a very helpful book for studensts inenvironmental chemistry studies. But as a pure chemistry student i findsome parts of the book too easy, even boring at times, specially thechapters on organic environmental chemistry. On the other hand the chapterson physical environmental chemistry are very good and contain challengingproblems. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Text For Environmental Design Management ! Flawless!
I live, study and work in the New York Tri-State region and this book is pretty great because the author also lived, worked and studied in the same region. Whats good about that? The Human Development and Expliotation is our region is very diverse and often connects directly with other prominent regions around the globe. The author basically covers alot of legalities, origins, design principles, and field work analysis really well.

5-0 out of 5 stars 94 S: Excellent Resource, Environmental Health professionals
I have just reviewed the ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND SANITATION 1994SUPPLEMENT, by Joseph A. Salvato and Joe E. Beck. It's a great resourcefor professionals seeking a broader vision of environmental health practiceareas and where we are heading.Prof. Beck obviously put a lot of workinto conceptualizing this volume and working with the distinguishedcontributors. It shows. In particular, I found the first chapter,Stakeholder Focused Interactive Planning (SFIP)by Joe Beck and Steven Isonto be a brilliant piece on the desirability of (indeed, the imperative forour profession to) include the public in problem-solving and planning.Ihave used this process and mediated disputes ranging from sitingcontroversies (haz. waste facility siting in Massachusetts) to determiningfuture land use options at Hanford in the nuclear weapons complex.Icommend both Beck and Ison for their clear portrayal of the paradigm aswell as the steps one undertakes in conducting such planning.Federalgovernment engineers and planners have been learning the hard way aboutwhat happens when decisions are made without public input and withoutregard to the values, interests, and expectations of so-calledstakeholders.At Hanford, more than $20 billion in appropriations hasyielded preciously little in terms of actual cleanup:one may wonder ifCongress will continue to appropriate the substantial $6 billion a year forthe Dept. of Energy's Environmental Management Program without consensus ofthe public on #1) the benefits or #2) the ameliorated risks from presentexpenditures.Current stakeholders come from a wide range of publicinterest groups and they do not get along particularly well. They do nothave current programs or projects that reflect the use of the SFIP andresearchers should be asking themselves, "Why not?" (Resourcesfor the Future [RFF] has an on-going research project that tackles publicparticipation in environmental decision making).Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very useful book
This book tries to cover so many subjects that it covers none of them well. Most chapters are full of generalities rather than the details needed by a practicing engineer or student. The worst feature of the handbook isthe index, which contains so few entries that it is very difficult to findinformation on a topic or determine if the book even mentions it, whichoften it doesn't. Rather than buy this expensive handbook, I would suggestinvesting in standard references for the individual topics (e.g. wastewatertreatment, solids waste) in which you are interested. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Compendious Discussion of Groundwater Development
The author does a great job discussing aquifer properties, the hydrologic cycle, movement of groundwater, exploration, well hydraulics etc..The book presents information on transmissivity, well yield, storage, time-drawdown, and distance draw-down graphs for confined and unconfined conditions and how to use them. Also the sections on different drilling methods, well design and development I have found useful.Graphs, charts, and pictures are in color which is a nice change from black and white.I would recommend this book to any pofessional interested in groundwater exploration and movement.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fundamental reference for groundwater development
Originally published in 1966, this large book (almost 1100 pages) is acomprehensive reference for all aspects of the development of groundwaterresources, with a particular strength in the subjects of water well design, construction, and testing. An essential reference, interesting reading, and the retail price is a bargain. The book is published by JohnsonFiltration (now U.S. Filter / Vivende) and may have a bias toward the wellscreeen design originated by Johnson, but that does not detract from thevalue of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go To the Ant Thou Sluggard!
Uncommon insights into the origin and development of important things. The author shows us how there are lessons all around us if we are clever enough to be watching when they reveal themselves! Shows us that there are patterns in nature and in the human experience that, when uncovered and examined, can prove to be templates for success in our lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides a decent primer to an increasingly important concept
I liked this book.It provides a decent overview of emergent properties in general, and particularly the notion of "intelligence" as an emergent property (e.g., one ant is dumb, many ants togther are smart).
5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting and provoking
I was stunned to see so many critical reviews of this book here.Even more stunned by the criticisms. This is not a scientific treatise, and never pretends to be.This is not an introduction into the more abstract and obscure aspects of Emergence, nor is it a dry and tedious mathematical paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is pretty good!
I bought this study guide to help me in my geology class. It isn't the same edition as my textbook but it is still the same. The chapters are the same and it has really helped me remember the material. The pages have fill in the blank and multiple choice and practice quizzes. All the answers are at the end of the book. I recomend this for anyone who is taking geology and is using the "Earth" book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding introductory textbook in physical geology
Despite the proliferation of introductory physical geology textbooks in recent years, none have surpassed the quality of Tarbuck and Lutgens' "Earth".The text is accurate, up-to-date, well-organized, andexceptionally lucid. The writing flows nicely and presents complex topicsand ideas in a way that is easy for non-scientists to understand, while atthe same time resisting the trend toward "dumbing-down" that hasrecently affected many introductory textbooks in Earth sciences. The bookis also illustrated wonderfully with diagrams that are effectivelydesigned, beautifully executed, and perfectly matched to the accompanyingtext. The photographs are likewise outstanding in subject and quality, with great efforts obviously having been made to find excellent picturesthat complement the text and clearly illustrate the features and processesbeing described. The overall quality of the photographs is far better thanin most other textbooks of this kind.Substantial improvements have beenmade for the sixth edition, including the addition of helpful illustrationsto the glossary and the addition of many new photographs throughout thebook (for example, compare the 5th and 6th edition pictures of drumlins, moraines, igneous rock textures, tsunamis, sinkholes, etc.).Afterexamining many textbooks, I have decided to use this one in theundergraduate course I will teach next year.

3-0 out of 5 stars Earth - an average introductory textbook
This book has dozens of errors, but in its defense, I must say that every introductory textbook I've used or reviewed has similar errors. For example, thermal expansion due to daily temperature fluctuations does NOT fracture rocks. Fire fractures rocks, and local fires can occur in manydeserts. The photo of a rock split is actually due to ice (not frost)wedging. Deserts can be freezing. The book does not address the importanceof past climates. Most of North America's landforms were formed under wet, warm climates, not today's. The hydrologic cycle should be expanded to thegeohydrologic cycle, which incorporates plate tectonics. Plate tectonics,as presented, is rather primitive. We're in, I'd say, 3rd generation platetectonics, but it is not being taught. Mountain glacial landscapes areentirely misinterpreted, based on a false paradigm originating in the1840s. Yosemite Valley is far more a relict tropical landscape than aglaciated one, and Bridalveil Falls has existed for 10s of millions ofyears before glaciation. Evolution of desert landscapes is equally as bad.The authors don't understand pediments, which are exhumed weathering fronts(as in Joshua Tree National Park) or exhumed detachments (as in the MojaveDesert). Etc., etc. ... Read more
