5-0 out of 5 stars Can you believe people are still disbelieving after 40 years!?
It certainly doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that whatever "inputs" we put into a system (Earth, humans, water, air, etc.), will in turn impact the system and the systems "outputs."If we put poison into the soil, air, and water, we will ultimately re-ingest these materials and create a toxic environment that will be unable to support the system that we are purportedly trying to save.Do the logic yourself. What kind of logic is it that would say that malaria deaths justify the use of DDT?We have no idea of how many millions, or billions, of people globally have been impacted by its use in the forms of debilitating illnesses and death from cancer and the like. With this false rationale, just as in the current debate over the use and subsequent output of carbon materials, we are again showing our naivete in believing that we can put a "technological" fix on an issue that is better addressed by the way we live and consume. So, we save all these poor souls from malaria, but then we give them a planet that is poisonous?Nonsensical at best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
Although this book was published more than 40 years ago, it's still worth a read. I found it interesting, informative and disturbing. Although I know DDT has been banned, I can't help but worry about some of the lasting effects of it and other chemicals used as pesticides or insecticides.

1-0 out of 5 stars A misguided mass killer
Before this misguided book was published, DDT was successfully reducing malaria deaths across the globe. After it, and the subsequent ban on DDT, millions of people have suffered and died needlessly. For example, in Sri Lanka in 1948, there were 2.8 million malaria cases and 7,300 malaria deaths. With widespread DDT use, malaria cases fell to 17 and no deaths in 1963. After DDT use was discontinued, Sri Lankan malaria cases rose to 2.5 million in the years 1968 and 1969, and the disease remains a killer in Sri Lanka today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Air Pollution Control
Air Pollution Control by Cooper and Alley, presents a clearly written overview of air pollution and the control processes available for the engineer to choose from.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best but good enough
I cannot say this book is the best book ever been written on air pollution but it's a pretty good book. Especially when it comes to modeling, I love the text. It's a good book to be in your library; however, I do not recommend it as a reference book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars highway to hell
Last night in his State of the Union speech, G. W. Bush pointed out the obvious fact that America depends far too heavily on oil to support its lifestyle.Whoever programmed him to say that must have been reacting to the mounting unrest over the crises associated with big oil:war, pollution, corruption, and extreme flabbiness.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Rise and Decline of Humanity
I believe that many of the ways we view our lives and live it is directly related to the relation of space, especially where our homes are and what we do daily.
5-0 out of 5 stars Uncommon readings addressing the Civic Community
I purchased this book after reading Kunstler's most recent book, The Long Emergency. I found the author had much to say though at times his stridency and passion may have clouded his message somewhat. But hey, if we are talking about the end of society as we have known it for the last one hundred years perhaps a little passion can't hurt. I was moved enough however, to purchase his earlier book (1994), The Geography of Nowhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rethinking is the right word
Being an environmentalist isn't just about enjoying the outdoors or recycling. This is an in depth study of the complex interactions between humans and our world and an examination of our historical and cultural relationship with our environment. In particular, I found the discussion of our meaning for the word and our concept of nature to be particularly enlightening. There is simply no place in the world that isn't touched by human impact and noone on the planet who isn't touched by our environment and what we do to it. A MUST for anyone serious about the study of environmental study.

5-0 out of 5 stars the result of a year-long project in critical thinking
Cronan has done it again! This volume of essays critically examines the concept of wilderness, nature, and humanity's role in the modern world.Though the individual essays are somewhat uneven, the main theme of thebook is clearly communicated, especially in Cronan's introductory piece. That is, that the concept of wilderness needs careful rethinking, particularly with our world nearing 10 billion persons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but magnesium supplementation also helps
This book is helpful in that the factors discussed in it can contribute to, and exacerbate, allergies and asthma. But there is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma and allergies is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma and/or allergies who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with these ailments under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma or allergies please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve these ailments. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective form. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Racist Garbage
This book twists facts and constantly points the finger at the 'massa' letting down the poor. White men are said to be in a position of leadership out of 'accident of birth'. She tells us not to make, snicker, of stand for racial jokes. Then in the next chapter she tells one of her own in support of black pride. This book is absolutely riddled with contradictions. She feels it is the responsibility of you and I, through government to pay enough taxes so that there are no poor families in America. She writes that one should not feel 'entitled' to anything they didnt 'sweat' and 'work for'. Then says 'we' should 'give' to the poor instead of buying more things for ourselves. This book is absolutely ridiculous. If a white man wrote a book like this it would be dismissed as racist garbage.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
I cannot express in words the power of this wonderful book.I am an adult who was not raised with any values that could sustain me through all the messages of the outside world:Look beautiful, make money, drive fancy cars, clothes make the person; all the hype the media blasts at you everyday.I picked up this book and for the first time in my life, I felt grounded. I internalized the values in this book and for the first time in my life, I felt peace. All the distractions of the outside world could no longer effect me. The book changed my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A message we needto pass along to the next generation
Drawing from inspirational experiences from her own childhood, Dr. Edelman talks to (not at) her own children, urging them, in whatever occupation they may choose, to serve the community at large. This is also a book for adults (parents, educators, and religious and community leaders) to read, to live a life of principles and a desire to somehow make the world a better place - in short, to serve as the strong, positive role model that so many of our children have had to do without.Read more

The scope and technical detail of this seminal work covering the cutting edge in Atmospheric chemistry is beyond remarkable. Just the number of references is mind boggling. The book presents the material in a veryreadable and understandable style. The authors have kept the reader inmind. 5-0 out of 5 stars Gibbs' book an inspiring & accurate account
As a native Western New Yorker who lived in suburban Buffalo during the Love Canal era, I found Gibbs' account both accurate and inspiring.(I'm also a Ph.D. historian and am a stickler for evidence.)This book demonstrates that even one person can make a difference -- a lesson we need to hear today more than ever. The evidence of Love Canal's danger to residents is overwhelming. The book to which another reviewer refers as counterevidence (The Skeptical Environmentalist) has been widely panned in the scientific and scholarly reviews such as the journal Science as a highly flawed book which used secondary sources out of context.I invite you to visit Love Canal the next time you are in Niagara Falls, and you will see (and smell) for yourself the physical evidence of the chemicals which bloop and seep in the areas covered by a massive clay cap right across from the elementary school -- like some terrible modern-day burial mound. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not the whole story.
Before picking up Lois Gibbs's self-congratulatory tome, the reader would do well to research the whole story behind the Love Canal fiasco. In brief, Love Canal was a neighborhood in Niagara, New York, that was used by Hooker Chemicals as a dumping-ground for toxins in the 1940s and 1950s.As with many landfills, the area was covered and developed. An incident in 1958 in which three children suffered chemical burns from seeping toxins alerted local residents to the history of their lots. They nonetheless stayed for another twenty years.4-0 out of 5 stars Reminds us that citizens must remain diligent.
Gibbs' book is important to the history of the grassroots environmentalmovement. It helps us understand where we came from and why it's soimportant to have programs like Superfund. It also reminds us that citizensmust be diligent in their fight against polluting industry and thepoliticos who share their beds. While she often repeats herself, it's stilla quick (and powerful) read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars basic science text
Overall, this book is OK.It explains the concepts of Physics as they relate to the environment, giving a student like myself, who is not the biggest science person, a way to relate the information to what is being taught. The book features questions at the end of each chapter--but the catch is that many of the questions had the wrong answers, according to my professor. The book features algebriac equations and conversions, again, several were inaccurate and my professor had to correct them. Finally, the last two chapters of the book were not adequate enough to explain the concepts my professor wanted to teach. The book is a nice attempt at explaining concepts, BUT I had a professor who almost went off of the book entirely, except she had to correct several things, making this book an often useless study tool.To put it bluntly, if you have to buy this book for class, hope you have a good professor who knows what they are teaching, or else you are in for a boring semester. ... As the New Testament is to Christians and the Torah is to Jews, this work is the essential literature to understanding aerosols and aerosol technology. You enter as a novice with human explanations of terms, proceed through most of the mundate and requisite statistics, and then areallowed to explode through the fascination that is aerosols.Throughcomprehensive, yet comprehensable language, this is the first and only wayto understand what has previously been an elusive and disperse knowledge. Each edition incorporates current tech and thought. A best, first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to aerosol behavior in various applications!
Excellent guide to particle behaviour...I am involved in research where an indepth understanding of aerosol behavior is a must in electrostatic powder coating and separation. This is an excellent resource and should be a partof your professional collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please write one more, Dr. Hinds!
How is the aerosol from hair spray related to a carbonated drink or a sponge? It all has to do with what is finely dispersed and what medium suspends this dispersion. With these provoking thoughts, William C. Hinds leads us into the partculars of suspended particles: aerosols. Dr. Hinds has accomplished an amazing feat here. Understanding this complicated field requires familiarity with at least one year of college calculus. With an eloquent writing style laced with differentials and derivations, he describes the various phenomena of aerosols, including particle settling speed, respirability, light scattering, dust explosions, and much more. His description of aerosol measurement techniques is interesting and detailed.(You would be surprised at how complicated are the physics of filtration!) What is truly special, however, is his ability to effectively describe in words what the equations are saying. You can grasp a feel for the phenomena described even if some of the differentials leave you stumped. With problems (and their answers--NOT solutions!) at the end of each chapter, this is an ideal text for graduate students in public health, engineering, industrial hygiene, or toxicology. Professionals working in these fields, however, will find the book a valuable reference. The text is filled with helpful tables and figures, and the more rigorous proofs of important formulas are presented in appendices. References end each chapter.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Kind of interesting
This was a so-so assessment of climate change. It had some very serious methodological problems (the scenarios) and some editorial problems but it was a starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book and Easy to Read
This book is an excellent choice if you would like to read straight forward and well researched information about climate change. It is well written and easy to read. The graphics are some of the most effective that I have seen in a scientific text!1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly integrated; lacking data
This volume was not well put together, not well edited, not well integrated.I am not a global warming skeptic, but the logic of this analysis is very poor - brainstorming lists of possible effects rather than thoughtful scientific analysis. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best and now up-to-date review of a complex subject (2nd ed)
excellent review of the available data on this difficult subject.Lots of evidence based data and peer reviewed literature is used as the basis of discussion of this controversial subject.Highly recommended although itmay also raise more questions that it answers. The authors are highlyqualified (Prof at MIT with experience in environmental affairs andpracticing MD allergist)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Of all that I have read on the subject of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), this is by far the most cogent, balanced, organized, and complete summary of information on this mysterious medical phenomenon.I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from MCS, TILT, CFIDS, or any of the constellation of related supposedly "psychological" symptomologies, including depression, anxiety disorder, or bi-polar illness.Read it BEFORE you spend another nickel on supplements, vitamins, or anti-depressant drugs!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source for the latest science & policy info on MCS!
The 2nd edition of Chemical Exposures reviews all sides of the MCS debate--with much new information on scientific and policy developments since the first edition.I recommend it highly for patients, physicians, and policy makers. --Albert Donnay, Exec.
