2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful in study
I tried hard to work with this book. The only its doubtful advantage is the number of examplas. But what to do with them if there is no any explanations, no any reference formulas etc.?
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Very good book for fluid mechanics, still some of the part for compressible fluids is more confusing. I would highly recommend this for students writing professional exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Groundwater
Overall a very good book. This is the text our Hydrogeology professor, Dr.J.Toth used in the 80's. It covers a great deal of information on facies, flow nets, hydrologic cycle, chemical evolution, groundwater resource evaluation, contamination, groundwater processes and a really good section on chemical principles and mass action. This is not a quantitative text, the discussions on finite difference and finite element methods include very little math. I would have also liked to have seen a better discussion of well hydraulics. I still turn to it for a reference as it is a very useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rigorous and quantitative basic reference
This is a good complement to "Groundwater Hydrology" by Todd. Freeze and Cherry is more detailed, rigorous, and quantitative than Todd, but it doesn't communicate the big picture quite as well. As well as anundergraduate textbook, this book is an essential resource for anyoneworking in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "bible" of groundwater
Despite the fact that this book was written almost twenty years ago, it is still considered the definitive work on groundwater geology. A must-have for hydrogeologists and groundwater engineers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Textbook
I am using this book as a textbook for a Soil Nutrition class. The book is surprisingly interesting considering it is a textbook. It is an excellent reference for soil and soil/plant nutrition questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book!
What a boring topic, you may think.Who could write a thick book about soil? And who possibly can read it?You may be surprised! If your interest is in the field of landscape architecture, horticulture, forestry, gardening, site engineering e.g. this book will give you a professional knowledge, in a very systematic, approachable way.I will keep Soil Science in my professional library as a reference book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New Horizons
The scope and technical detail of this seminal work covering the cutting edge in Atmospheric chemistry is beyond remarkable. Just the number of references is mind boggling. The book presents the material in a veryreadable and understandable style. The authors have kept the reader inmind. They also add surprising levity on occasion and show a keen grasp ofareas outside chemistry. I know of no other work in this field that is morecurrent, comprehensive, and helpful. If only otherscientific works wereas thorough and readable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Definite keeper for future reference!
Although we used the 8th ed in a recent course, it is probably the most well thought out O.R. intro you will find - good relevant case study material for the interested practitioner as well. Not too mathematically rigorous w.r.t. research, but examples are detailed enough, and the book also has a great selection of seemingly real-life practice problems.I especially appreciate ancillary chapters (e.g. crystal ball, project mgmt) being kept on the CD-ROM, it makes it a lot easier to carry and read on the train!

5-0 out of 5 stars A bright"Star" in the OR SKY!!!
Very good book! Can be used as a reference for practising engineers or as a Text-book in a class room at the Senior under-graduate class or in a Masters program. I used this book 25 years ago and now the 2001 edition is very well written and organized, addressing the 21st Century problems in OR. For Personal PC applications the CD is of great help for any one who want to succeed in Operations Research!

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent math book.
First off the fact that the book isn't crammed full of proofs makes it easier to follow and understand, some of the examples are made overly complex, but the software that comes along with it are excellent. The Interactive Routine software is outstanding, the big M method was never clear to me until I worked though the routines. The problems are somewhat relavant, but I would have liked to have had more answers in the back of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just technical info
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.Although I picked it up for its scientific information, Ramsey and Modarres have also included some of the intrigue that we all know exists within the industry.I found the geo-political and cross-industrial information insightful.I'd love to see more on this... like, "who wants to kill off the nuclear power industry? And why?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction To Nuclear Safety
"Commercial Nuclear Power" is a must-read book for anyone with an interest in nuclear energy specifically, or with electricity production and consumption generally. The book is fairly technical, and would be most easily understood by people with some basic knowledge of chemistry, physics, or engineering; having said that, the authors are very good at explaining difficult ideas from general concept to specific application, which makes the book comprehensible to an average reader. One thing that makes the book easier to digest is the lack of higher math, which is frequently where this subject can bog down for non-professionals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nuclear Energy - From Jane Fonda to Reality
This book, though somewhat technical, is a primer in the problems and great potential of nuclear power. It dissolves the fog of "junk science" perpetuated by some environmentalist groups and the Press in particular. A must read if you want to have an informed, accurate opinion as a 21st century power consumer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gibbs' book an inspiring & accurate account
As a native Western New Yorker who lived in suburban Buffalo during the Love Canal era, I found Gibbs' account both accurate and inspiring.(I'm also a Ph.D. historian and am a stickler for evidence.)This book demonstrates that even one person can make a difference -- a lesson we need to hear today more than ever. The evidence of Love Canal's danger to residents is overwhelming. The book to which another reviewer refers as counterevidence (The Skeptical Environmentalist) has been widely panned in the scientific and scholarly reviews such as the journal Science as a highly flawed book which used secondary sources out of context.I invite you to visit Love Canal the next time you are in Niagara Falls, and you will see (and smell) for yourself the physical evidence of the chemicals which bloop and seep in the areas covered by a massive clay cap right across from the elementary school -- like some terrible modern-day burial mound. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not the whole story.
Before picking up Lois Gibbs's self-congratulatory tome, the reader would do well to research the whole story behind the Love Canal fiasco. In brief, Love Canal was a neighborhood in Niagara, New York, that was used by Hooker Chemicals as a dumping-ground for toxins in the 1940s and 1950s.As with many landfills, the area was covered and developed. An incident in 1958 in which three children suffered chemical burns from seeping toxins alerted local residents to the history of their lots. They nonetheless stayed for another twenty years.4-0 out of 5 stars Reminds us that citizens must remain diligent.
Gibbs' book is important to the history of the grassroots environmentalmovement. It helps us understand where we came from and why it's soimportant to have programs like Superfund. It also reminds us that citizensmust be diligent in their fight against polluting industry and thepoliticos who share their beds. While she often repeats herself, it's stilla quick (and powerful) read. ... Read more
