5-0 out of 5 stars A Better Understanding of the Coastal Environment
As one of the Open University Oceanography Series, this book offers an excellent introduction to the physical processes operating in the nearshore and immediate offshore environments of the coastal zone. With a particular emphasis on the relationship between process and form, this work covers essential ideas and practical applications for university level instructors and students interested in the coastal environment. The book material is straightforward, readable, and offers the opportunity to develop fundamental research questions at a variety of levels.Best of all, it's a well-organized work at an affordable price. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Chemical Fate and Transport
Overall I would say this is a well written and useful text.I used this text for a Graduate Level Civil Engineering class while working on my Masters. This is a good introductory text for understanding the basic concepts of advective and fickian transport of contaminants of concern. The concepts presented can be applied to pretty much any chemical. The text covers basic concepts, chemical distribution of phases, mechanisms responsible for physical transport, air-water exchange modeling, Redox reactions, dissolved oxygen modeling, determining partitioning coefficients among phases, transport within the subsurface enviornmental and processess within the atmosphere.I found that the section on Bio Accumlation Factor (BAF), Bio Concentration Factor (BCF), and determining the increasing concentration within each trophic level within the food chain of the system to be weak. Each chapter within the text is full of problem sets but there is no solution guide which would be helpful.I would recommend this text, however, I would also supplement certain sections with additional reading as required.

3-0 out of 5 stars Chemical Fate and Transport in the Environment
While there is no doubt that the author is highly proficient in the subject matter the book was a difficult read.Terms and theories were explained clearly however this is not an introductory level chemistry book. This book is written for chemical or environmental engineering students.Illustrations and tables are also inserted at points where you are engrossed in some pretty heady material so it gave the impression of jumping around.I say this b/c illustrations and tables had a lot of information included. The formulas were high level mathematical computations that I found bewildering.I am not Einstein but I also have 10 years of in the trenches environmental chemistry and field management. There were excellent problems to work at the end of each chapter but the answers were not to be found in the book.I have no idea if I worked the problems correctly which defeats the point of working them in the first place.I would not recommend this book as a "beginner level" chemistry book. This is more appropriate for a graduate school level which may have been the intended audience. If you are looking for a book packed with theory and formulas then this is the book for you.I had expected a book that was a little more general in nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Price is Right!
This is a reasonably priced textbook for advanced undergrad & grads studying the environmental sciences in Engineering, Hydrology, and Chemistry. Environmental consultants in the private sector could alsoemploy this textbook as a reference.Harry Hemond (of MIT) and LizFechner-Levy (consultant in Bethesda, MD) deliver a quantitative treatmentof processes. Battle-tested at MIT for many years, this volume featurestime-saving exercises at the end of each chapter and an accompanyingsolutions manual. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Racist Garbage
This book twists facts and constantly points the finger at the 'massa' letting down the poor. White men are said to be in a position of leadership out of 'accident of birth'. She tells us not to make, snicker, of stand for racial jokes. Then in the next chapter she tells one of her own in support of black pride. This book is absolutely riddled with contradictions. She feels it is the responsibility of you and I, through government to pay enough taxes so that there are no poor families in America. She writes that one should not feel 'entitled' to anything they didnt 'sweat' and 'work for'. Then says 'we' should 'give' to the poor instead of buying more things for ourselves. This book is absolutely ridiculous. If a white man wrote a book like this it would be dismissed as racist garbage.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
I cannot express in words the power of this wonderful book.I am an adult who was not raised with any values that could sustain me through all the messages of the outside world:Look beautiful, make money, drive fancy cars, clothes make the person; all the hype the media blasts at you everyday.I picked up this book and for the first time in my life, I felt grounded. I internalized the values in this book and for the first time in my life, I felt peace. All the distractions of the outside world could no longer effect me. The book changed my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A message we needto pass along to the next generation
Drawing from inspirational experiences from her own childhood, Dr. Edelman talks to (not at) her own children, urging them, in whatever occupation they may choose, to serve the community at large. This is also a book for adults (parents, educators, and religious and community leaders) to read, to live a life of principles and a desire to somehow make the world a better place - in short, to serve as the strong, positive role model that so many of our children have had to do without.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Science & Facts Beat Anecdotes Any Day of the Week
Lomborg has compiled an amazing amount of data and presents it thoughtfully and thoroughly. He brings a scientific mindset to the environmentalist movement. If you find that fear mongering and factually challenged arguments aren't cutting it anymore, this is the book for you.The scope of his work is stunning. The Skeptical Environmentalist is a must have for anyone who is frustrated when anecdotal evidence is presented as science in the media.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important work
More than anything else, Lomborg displays a respect for honest method and spends a great deal of time describing the margin of error involved in all the information he sifts through.
4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Scan of Skeptical Environmentalist
I have not read this book as yet, but having scanned it I am pleased that I bought it. The author is making good points in exposing the over kill of many so called environmentalists. This country is palgued with misinformation designed to promote government grants for academics, and bogus evidence for politicians to exploit, ala Al Gore. Books such as this help set the record straight. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but the cover fell off due to poor binding
A great book for explaining the essentials of groundwater modeling including governing equations and statistical evaluation of numeric modeling. I just wish the publisher could produce a book that the coverdidn't fall off within the first couple months of use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great content but poor binding
This text was used in my groundwater modeling class and was useful and instructive specifically for GMS and MODFLOW.The binding split after normal use during the quarter to almost every student enrolled in thecourse.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great preview of modeling methodology
This text outlines the basic principles and problems faced by younggroundwater modelers. The comprehensive interpretation of commonchallenges are handled with reference to real case studies.Basicsteady-state groundwater modeling is supplimented with transient examples. It is a great text for any groundwater modeling class at the undergraduateor graduate level. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Geohydrology
After reading the first three chapters, I found serious errors and deficiencies in Chapter 3, Basic Geology and Hydrology.Although not relevant to design, the authors should know the earth's crust is 0 to 20.5 miles thick as opposed to 40 to 130 ft. thick. The discussion of soil classification systems recognizes the USCS, AASHTO, and USDA sytems, but only discusses the USCS and AASHTO systems. The highway and airport pavement driven AASHTO system is of little relevance to groundwater flow. The USDA system is commonly used and received no discussion.Although the chapter discusses the differences between unconfined and unconfined aquifers, the aquifer properties section is incomplete and confusing as to what properties apply to unconfined aquifers, confined aquifers, or both types of aquifers.Last, the example for Darcy's Law demonstrates a lack of understanding of the basic principles of groundwater flow. The example on page 45 presents an ERRONEOUS answer of 669,500 gpd, where the correct answer is 200,640 gpd.The author's incorrectly used the flow velocity rather than the Darcy Flux or specific discharge to calculate flow.Futhermore, their calculation of pore water velocity requires a discussion of apparent porosity. If one were to use their method of calculating flow, over calcuation of flows would be in the neighborhood of 200-400%.

4-0 out of 5 stars Design of Remediation Systems
It is a good design guideline of this sort in remdiation engineering since it was written from designer's perspective with real examples and spreadsheets for data recording and analyses. However, it would be even better if it included more theoretical background on vapor extraction testto help designers compare with groundwater unsteady pump test theory. There is a minor error in page 216 that motor HP is considered a fuction ofmotor's efficiecy. Motors are usally rated as output HP. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the Dirt on a Filthy Subject
There's no way around it: We all produce trash. Some create more garbage than others, but nobody is exempt from discards. We rely on our local garbage truck drivers--"san men"--to make it disappear. So where does it go? Does recycling really do any good? Is there anything we can do to help cut down on waste?
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Toss This
I got a little worried when I read the first pages of this book and found the author starting to sort through her daily garbage, making herself account for every piece of plastic wrap in there, every orange rind. I was afraid I might be meeting up with a humorless fanatic who put recycling ahead of all immediate human values.
4-0 out of 5 stars Time to put a lid (cap) on our garbage
Out of sight, out of mind is the phrase that comes to mind after most people place their bag of waste out to the curb. Elizabeth Royte, in a moment of self-reflection, decides that it is time to see what happens to all of the waste and recyclable material that she disposes of weekly. Spurred on by an Earth day cleanup of a canal in her hometown of New York City, she decides to get down and dirty and dives back into her garbage to determine what she is throwing out. Using a kitchen scale and her daughter's toboggan, to restrain the waste, she sorts, weighs and records every minute shred of waste.
