1-0 out of 5 stars Geochemistry of Natural Waters
I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters.I found this to be a very poor text to use.The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving.I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry.I would not recommend use of this text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs Work
This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater.Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times.I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts
Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - There are ERRORS though
Since Wiley does not (apparently) publish errata for this book, I figured I'd post this here; it may be some help to some frustrated grad student (like me).
5-0 out of 5 stars Terzaghi says it all...
you've got to have this book if you are a geotechnical engineer.terzaghi gives examples from actual projects and presents them clearly.there are solutions to geotechnical problems encountered in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Karl Terzaghi is loved
Many have commented on my review below -- most favorably. A few said, it was the second edition of the book they had admired most. Well! that was in 1967. Geotechnical engineering has exploded since then. Today it would bealmost impossible for anyone to write a 5-star general purpose bookon thesubject.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for some allergies -- but not others
"My House Is Killing Me!" is a wonderful book with lots of great information for people who are allergic to mold, mildew, and dust mites.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
Jeffrey May is a clear, concise communicator. He offers specific, helpful information.Easy to read and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but magnesium supplementation also helps
This book is helpful in that the factors discussed in it can contribute to, and exacerbate, allergies and asthma. But there is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma and allergies is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma and/or allergies who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with these ailments under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma or allergies please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve these ailments. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective form. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fun review of evolution, an excellent overview of the beauty of life.
It is refreshing to find a brilliant scientist who is willing to turn nature into poetry and spirituality. It shouldn't matter if you are an atheist or a deist, the description of the common bonds we have with the earth and the different species of the animal kingdom brings tears to your eyes.At the same time, we can have reverence and feeling for the profound desires of humans to communicate and feel intimacy with God who may well be a metaphor for the beauty of the gorgeous biological process.

4-0 out of 5 stars A manual for converts
Few voices are as forceful or as eloquent as that of the convert. This account of personal awe in the face of Nature is a passionate example. From the centre of Christian America, Goodenough explains why ideas of divine forces driving Nature must be replaced. Her replacement, trying to mediate between "cold" science and misleading traditional dogma, is called "natural religion".Astonished by the wonders of cosmology and life, Goodenough became a scientist and shed her monotheistic background. What wasn't thrown out with the theology was her sense of wonder.Having once buried her head beneath a pillow out of despair over her inability to comprehend the cosmos, she relates how she emerged to study science. She chose biology, and it's well for us she did.Her description of protein construction is unmatched in science writing.
5-0 out of 5 stars There is wonder aplenty in nature and science
"But there must be something more" is a common refrain among those who believe that science robs the world of its meaning; those who cannot countenance that we are ultimately elaborate biochemical reactions, that life emerged from non-life, that stars are nuclear furnaces, that the universe began with a Big Bang.Ursula Goodenough answers this refrain with compassion, patience, poetry, and above all, a command of science and a gift for communicating its achievements and its excitement. In "The Sacred Depths of Nature", Ursula Goodenough, a research biologist, presents a series of meditations on the mysteries of nature. She argues passionately that there are mysteries aplenty within us and about us, and that we needn't invent a supernatural realm. How can one contemplate the exquisite workings of a signal transduction cascade within a living cell, or the grandeur of stellar evolution, or the complexity of biological evolution without a sense of awe?As Carl Sagan was fond of pointing out, these stories have far greater richness and beauty than do any religious myths, no matter how richly embellished.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What, me worry?
Stolen future? What future? This excellent book documents the threat posed to human reproduction and fetal development by the synthetic chemicals first created in the '30s. Read this along with Christopher Bryson's "The Fluoride Deception," and you will agree with me: we are f***ed. But then, throw in a little eschatology from the Maya, the Buddhists, the Hopis, Edgar Cayce, Sir Isaac Newton, and the Book of Revelations (among others) and perhaps you will conclude with me: it really doesn't matter anyway. Why? Because we were already f***ed --- long before we started filling out bodies with toxic waste disguised as food and drink.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wake-up Call for Humanity...
This book is a chilling account of what modern inventions such as pesticides and plastics are doing to our environment, health, and future.
5-0 out of 5 stars I met Theo Colburn
At a nutrition conference, I sat down with my meal and a Nalgene water bottle. As I sat down, a woman I had seen speak earlier that day spouted out, "Don't drink out of that water bottle!" I was quite taken aback but her statement opened up a day long conversation about toxins in our food containers, her life's work and my life's work. After saying good-bye to Theo Colburn at the airport, I read her book on the airplane. Even though it is a thick scientific book, I couldn't put it down. For all who care about our future, this is a must-read book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obligatory reading!
This is the best book on numerical ecology available. Legendre & Legendre are already a classical on communities data analysis, and this second edition is a fundamental update. The book should be always around when you are analysing complex data sets and want a correct method and a valid interpretation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive -- Not exactly a "light read"
A great resource for graduate level and above. This book is comprehensive in terms of numerical ecology and is for the more advanced quantitative ecologist. My area of interest is site similarity indices, and I have only begun to tap into the knowledge available in this book on the subject.I am sure I will be returning to it repeatedly through the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible reference.
This is THE TEXT to have if you use any of the numerical techniques in the field of quantitative ecology. Its scope if exhaustively comprehensive. The authors clearly explain which methods are at your disposal under givencircumstances and which are inappropriate to use. Many of the methodsdescribed are illustrated with case studies of ecological examples from theliterature. In most cases, the authors walk you thru the computationalsteps involved in using a particular numerical method--this would make itpossible for the reader to construct a "home grown" algorithm formethods unavailable in "off-the-shelf" statistical packages. Inaddition, the book is also thankfully littered with citations andreferences for those computer programs that are available for each of themethods described...this is very up-to-date material, as many of thesereferences are web sites! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Solar Energy
I am learning about solar energy and this book was written in a way that explained every detail clearly. I feel I could get my engineer's degree from reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Good
I bought this book in 2005, almost 20 years after the first publication of the book. I went through a couple of emotional phases while reading the book. First I thought this was a great book: it has so many practical details and insights. When I got to the part on system controls and routing the power, I realized that this part is probably fairly weak because of the passage of time. Then when I looked at a few other more recent publications such as The Renewable Energy Handbook for Homeowners, by Kemp published in 2003, I realized that the present book is still a solid investment for someone interested in solar-electric. A lot of the basic information is still valid and it is more a case of prices changing and some of the technology being a bit easier to use. I like the fact that the book just concentrates on solar. There are no diversions or philosophical discussions on wind power or similar to confuse the situation. However, if you are a homeowner and want to look at all the alternatives, I suggest the newer book by Kemp, but that book is a bit thin on solar-electric so the present book is still needed. Kemp has many good ideas on insulation and conservation. In any case, the present book is down to earth practical stuff on solar: how it works and how you install. So to make a long story short I recommend the book as a buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Textbook, Limited Value Otherwise
This is a good textbook for teaching, and not as good of a source for research for real world application reference material, which is what I try to maintain a library to utilize.Very basic material coverage, good for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable books for safety and reliability engineers
Alhough Ang and Tang's Volumes I and II are already over 20 years old, I consider these books as one of the best on probabilistic design methods in civil engineering. The books cover topics such as 'statistical decision analysis (including CBA, MCA, MCDM)', 'queueing models', 'extreme value theory', 'Monte Carlo simulation', 'failure probability calculation' and 'system reliability techniques'. A huge amount of examples are embedded in the theory. They are ideal to be used as examination questions (which the reviewer succesfully does for his courses on 'Probabilistic Design' and 'Probabilistic Design in Hydraulic Engineering' at TU Delft, The Netherlands).
5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best book
I have used this book and Vol 2 in my graduate and undergraduate courses. Having used a variety of texts for teaching and learning about probability and statistics in an engineering context, I would say the two volumes byAng and Tang have no rivals. Lots and lots of good engineering typeproblems. ... Read more

The review manual has been very helpful in preparing for the exam so far.It has many problems with complete worked out solutions that are very helpful.I would recommend it to anyone preparing for the PE exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review book from practice problems
If your taking the tranportation Depth this is an excellent review book. It covers topics reflective of the NCEES description of the transportation Depth (except that part about Hydraulics/Hydrology and Culvert part and Geotechnical part). The only drawback with this book is that some of the problems are on the a bit easy compared to practice problems for CERM and NCEES sample examination, which may give you a false sense of security when preparing for the PE. The problem solutions are easy to follow and tells you where to locate (in terms of HCM2K and AASTHO Grn book). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for anyone interested in learning survival skills!
This is a comprehensive guide for anyone who wishes to learn a little or a lot about survival. It offers advice for preparing for everthing from minor disruptions in power to disaster preparedness to wilderness survival. Especially useful if you are aware of the impending fossil fuels crisis and want to arm yourself and/or your family with basic skills many of us don't know or have forgotten. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5-0 out of 5 stars When Technology Fails: A Manual for Self-Reliance and Planetary Survival
Excellent book for a wide range of topics related to survival. If you have read other survival books this one is more geared to pre-preperation and survival on a homefront or fixed location rather than finding yourself in a survival situation while traveling. However much of the information is usuable in a variety of situations and it appears more up to date than others. It also has plenty of info for use in non emergency/survival situation such as gardening and alternative energy generation etc...

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, not all is practical or needed
There is a lot of good information in this book, especially good are the reference and resource areas and websites the author includes.
