5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the Bible of desert landscape
One of the better things that crossed my desk last month was a copy of a new book by John Krieg titled Desert Landscape Architecture (Saint Lucie Press; ISBN: 1574442252.) Whether you are a homeowner, a contractor, abuilder, a wanna-be landscaper or a plant person, you need this book.Desert Landscape Architecture is a hands-on, step-by-step, "HowTo" book that will save anyone thousands of dollars on theirlandscape. The section on plants would make a great college text bookall by itself. There's a plant compendium with over 750 species listed.John is one of very few authors who consider all of our Southwesterndeserts, not just those in his home state of California. DesertLandscape Architecture provides the reader a better understanding of desertenvironments, climatic conditions and how man-made environments aredesigned and installed in order to cope with the harsh deserts.Bestof all, the book is written in the English language....not full of obscuretechnical terms known only to Zen Landscape Architects living in Madrid,Spain. With this book, and only this book, you'll learn about deserts, the soils, the plant life, design, basic standards of landscape design, site grading, drainage planning and whew!....much, much, more.Water-saving ideas are found by the barrel-full in the chapter onirrigation. This chapter emphasizes the critical nature of irrigationdesign and explains it as an environmental necessity, not a technicalissue. There are pages and pages of charts which contain the basicinformation needed by everyone interested in landscape design. This bookshould be required reading for every Planning and Zoning Department in theSouthwest. The author knows which end of the hammer drives the nailand his saw is plugged in and ready to rip. This is a hands-on approach, with hundreds of hints on how to plan ahead and bypass a lot of problemsthat seem to plaque a landscape job, whether it's on a new site or anexisting site that needs refurbishing. John Krieg is a former studentof the Dean of Desert Landscaping, Dr, Eric Johnson of Palm Springs,California. I spoke with Eric about John's book and he said: "John isone in a million. He knows his work and best of all, he knows how to write! His book moves right along, without a hitch. It's not just another dry oldtext book with footnotes in small print. This book will become the Bible ofdesert landscaping in the future." Sure enough, a glance at thetext shows bibliographies set in "jumbo" print and the author hasincluded personal comments on each reference cited. Simply stated,Desert Landscape Architecture is the only book you will ever need to buy. It's an investment that will easily save you several thousanddollars. I am proud to have been among the pre-publication readers ofDesert Landscape Architecture. Many times, writers get talked into being areader and when the suggestions get back to the author they are ignored.Folks, John doesn't play that way...each and every suggestion I made wasfollowed. Ditto for the suggestions made by Eric Johnson. Congratulations, John, you've written a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Enhanced Our Trip!
For the University of Denver Water Law Review, 5-0 out of 5 stars Get it before you go, take it with you
Great book that goes way beyond the standard guide book fare.It inspired me to make the trip after reading it, to see first hand how the ancient Inca Empire created a complete fortified city in the sky, to trace the old Inca trails by the watchtower, the drawbrige and into the main gate with the view of city and the peak beyond. Other travel books have beautiful pictures and "where to eat and where to stay" for this citadel but very little information on how the city itself came into being and survived. 5-0 out of 5 stars Machu Picchu - A Civil Engineering Marvel
Abandoned for centuries and overgrown by dense subtropical forest, this awesome city in the sky has been the subject of speculation and conjecture since Hiram Bingham first disclosed it in 1911.Now, for the first time, the wonders of Machu Picchus' construction and water supply are revealed in a new book by Kenneth R. Wright and Alfredo Valencia Zegarra. Anyone who has read Bingham's Lost City of the Incas, or who has visited this ancient city of the Incas or who yearns to journeythere, should read this new and searching volume that delves into and solves many of the mysteries of Machu Picchu. Why was it built, how the site was selected, and what were the critical criterial criteria that were met to make the ridge top site suitable for an alternate home for the Inca Pachacuti? Machu Picchu served as a residence, a fortress and a holy place. The developement of a water supply, the construction of terraces for agriculture and the remarkable and enduring granite structures were well concealed by its unique location. Near vertical cliffs, the roaring Urubamba river all contributed to the concealment of Machu Picchu from the Spanish invaders How an ancient people, without the written word, without instruments and steel tools so capably built and prospered there for more than a century is now revealed in this landmark book that will increase both the awe and respect of the reader for the Inca people. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Chapters survey not just techniques but political pros and cons, social effects, and environmental impact
Kicking The Carbon Habit: Global Warming And The Case Of Renewable And Nuclear Energy doesn't adopt the usual focus on cutting oil consumption: instead it focuses on reducing coal use. Coal-fired plants produce over half of the electricity in the US, accounting for some 40 percent of the country's greenhouse gasses. Sweet doesn't advocate a singular path of change another unusual feature but proposes a mix of environmentally sound technologies from wind power to nuclear reactors. Chapters survey not just techniques but political pros and cons, social effects, and environmental impact.
3-0 out of 5 stars Been there, done that
Oh...where to begin. This book had so much potential and, to my great chagrin, just fizzled.Ok, let's start with the positives. The author, Sweet, is an excellent writer and could undoubtedly make an expose on the finer points of watching acrylic latex dry, seem fascinating. His style is light, well-paced, to the point. In fact each chapter, as he nearly hints at in his introduction, is separately readable in any order and sounds exactly like an article that might appear in IEEE's Spectrum magazine, to which Sweet is a notorious contributor.Unfortunately from an editorial standpoint, this book left a lot to be desired.First of all, more than half of the book is related to a brief history of climatologists' attempts, successes and failures, to come up with a foundation for and later, a workable model of global warming viz. a viz. greenhouse gases/carbon, etc. That's fine, but for the price of this book, I think I'd either like less history and more solutions, or a proportionate amount of solutions...meaning a much larger book.Since the technical aspects of 'kicking the carbon habit' were probably not the focus of Sweet in the first place, then he should have dispensed with all that history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you've seen the movie - read this book
Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth" and his book by the same name have focused a lot of much needed attention on thetopic of Global Warming due to Green House Gasses. In "Kicking theCarbon Habit" eminent science journalist William Sweet provides not only an in-depth analysis of the reality of Global Warming and its causes but a practical program for the United States to take signifigant actions toward averting an impending catastrophy.Mr. Sweet is not an alarmist but I and every thinking person should bealarmed.Despite what the nay sayers and procrastinators may claim this book proves the "Science is In", the "Time is Now" and there is a way to go.

3-0 out of 5 stars Aquatic Chemistry text for introductory course
I used this text for a one-quarter introductory Aquatic Chemistry course. The tableau method to solve equilibrium problems was positively received only by about half the students.Other texts used for this course are Pankow and Stumm and Morgan.(None of them were free of difficulties.Stumm and Morgan still serves as the best reference; but readability is a problem for an introductory course.)Morel does a good job in the treatment of metal ion kinetics.

3-0 out of 5 stars basic science text
Overall, this book is OK.It explains the concepts of Physics as they relate to the environment, giving a student like myself, who is not the biggest science person, a way to relate the information to what is being taught. The book features questions at the end of each chapter--but the catch is that many of the questions had the wrong answers, according to my professor. The book features algebriac equations and conversions, again, several were inaccurate and my professor had to correct them. Finally, the last two chapters of the book were not adequate enough to explain the concepts my professor wanted to teach. The book is a nice attempt at explaining concepts, BUT I had a professor who almost went off of the book entirely, except she had to correct several things, making this book an often useless study tool.To put it bluntly, if you have to buy this book for class, hope you have a good professor who knows what they are teaching, or else you are in for a boring semester. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A 'you are there' history of a disaster
FIRE AND BRIMSTONE: THE NORTH BUTTE MINING DISASTER OF 1917 provides a 'you are there' history of a disaster which began just before midnight on June 8, 1917, when a fire trapped over four hundred men underground. As they fought to survive below, politics and local changes intersected above in a book which covers not just the mining disaster's circumstances, but its lasting implications for labor relations.
5-0 out of 5 stars One Disaster, Many Aftereffects
On 8 June 1917 an enormous 1,200 foot cable of wire, insulation, and lead sheathing, weighing five pounds per foot, was being lowered into the Granite Mountain copper mine in Butte, Montana. It kinked as it was going down the mine shaft, and in attempting to untangle it, the cable came loose, tearing down the shaft, ruining equipment, but harming no one.In the operation to recover the hopelessly damaged cable, however, part of the insulation caught fire. The resulting smoke and conflagration killed 164 miners, which is significant enough as the worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history. It also sparked labor violence and affected national politics even to the attempt of Franklin Delano Roosevelt to pack the Supreme Court with justices who saw things his way.Everything from the small flame that started the fire to the national repercussions is examined in _Fire and Brimstone: The North Butte Mining Disaster of 1917_ (Hyperion) by Michael Punke.Readers will be reminded of the coal mining disasters from earlier this year and the continuing danger of working underground, but will also get short course in the history of American copper mining and the associated labor movements of the first half of the twentieth century.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well researched and written historical tragedy
Since reading Punke's first novel, The Revenant, I have anxiously awaited his next effort. Fire & Brimstone certainly does not disappoint. Like the Revenant, Fire & Brimstone is a meticulously researched and colorful historical novel. However, Fire & Brimstone has significant relevance to today's world given the recent mining tragedies in West Virginia and elsewhere. Other modern day themes include all powerful energy companies, labor strife and environmental issues. Punke also brings to life a wide range of characters from that tragedy and era. I highly recommend Fire & Brimstone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reference for a Civil Engineer working with Water
I used this book as a course text in one course at grad school, and an unofficial text in numerous other courses. It is fairly specialized, geared toward the the intersection of civil engineering and hydrology. It contains an impressive breadth of subjects, some of which may now seem a little technologically quaint (although section 25.5.4 on meteor-burst telemetry is still incredibly cool). The bread and butter is immensely useful as a reference. In particular, I was impressed with the statistical elements of chapter 18, regarding the frequency analysis of extreme events. 5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Hydrology
The book covers everything from the hydrologic cycle, climatology and precipitation to hydrologic design for groudnwater pollution control. This is a great book to use for reference material.I keep going back to this text when ever I am looking for a quick reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vast Information, Increadable Woodcuts
This book is not a simple read for those looking for the basics, it a detailed review of the process of mining in the 16th Century throughout Germany with the inclusion of some surrounding regions. All aspects of the search for and creation of metals are covered from how to determine where a vein of materials is most likely to be found thru the methods of ore refinement and ingot production. The footnotes are incredibly helpful and sometimes (necessarily) take up more space than the text they refer to. This is not a basic overview, it is a manual designed to educate in specifics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ian Myles Slater on: A Humanist's Industrial Handbook
Georg Pawer was an extremely well educated German in the Humanist tradition of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century. It was natural that he turned his Greco-German name into Greco-Latin, labeling himself Georgius Agricola. Both versions mean Farmer (Georgios) Farmer (Pawer = Bauer / Agricola). He was a physician by profession. Neither side of his background would seem to suit him to write one of the great books on mining and the refining of ores, but as an official town physician, responsible for treating miners at no additional charge, he seems to have won their trust. The result was a manual, aimed not at people who would have to dig up ores, but at potential investors, and officials and lawyers, who would have to deal with financing, administration and litigation. He set out the basic customs and practices of mining, described the remarkably elaborate machines needed to keep mines dry and ventilated, and processing and refining, with their devices and chemicals. Naturally, he wrote it in the language of real scholarship, Latin, not sixteenth-century German.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent attention to detail of ancient mining practices
This book is a great read. The sections are well defined to cover each topic, including measurements where applicable and even the definition of tracts and management of said lands. He has written other books too.Ihope they reprint the translations soon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best WNC Hiking and Waterfall book out there
Buy this and forget all other waterfall and hiking books for WNC.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
I visited the mountains last week (Mid May) and with the help of this book I was able to find some really beautiful waterfalls. I never would have known they were there if not for the book. The directions were clear and easy to following, and the information on where to park was extrememly helpful. The best part about it was the fact that we had every waterfall to ourselves. I would highly recommened this book to anyone who enjoys unspoiled waterfalls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeper waterfall book
This is the updated version of the 1994 book - and at its release - it's extremely accurate of trail conditions (just used it). This is the bible for NC waterfalls in my opinion. The chapters are laid out nicely according to region and there are enough details to always set you right direction to each falls.
