Im a little worried
I just finished reading chapter one.I know it is quite early to make judgements, but already I'm starting to feel uneasy. As someone who has always enjoyed physics and math(and done well) I feel a little more insight into what is trying to be explained would be great.Im a student at the authors institution so I think thats why we have to use this book.I agree with others that there is a lot of waisted commentary so far, but it may prove to be usefull later.It just seems like a lot is thrown into one chapter and doesn't really mix well.More time, or more explanation about what is trying to be explained would greatly benefit the first chapter.

Pretty Good Overall
I'm an undergrad physics/engineering student.I thought this book was reasonably well written and clear.It could benefit from more example problems, and some solution techniques.
Wordy, some explanations are not clear, can be better.
I finished chapter 7. The authors do not show each step how to get the equations. Instead, a lot of math steps are missing. Unless you are good at math and recall all the fundamental physics equations, you will spend a lot of time to derive the equations by yourself. Without derive the equations, you can only accept the results without any insight. This book tries to cover introduction materials and more advanced materials.

An Amazing Introduction to an Amazing Field
The theory of superconductors is an amazingly complicated and rich field, and it can be very daunting to begin studying without a large background in physics. This book does an excellent job telling you the details enough to understand what is going on without giving you so much that it becomes a daunting task to read the book.
A basic reference in the field
This book provides an excellent comprehensive review of most of theaspects relevant to superconductivity. A strong basis in physics isrequired to follow it all the way. Otherwise, it is possible to read mostof the chapters separately without loosing continuity, so the more complexones can be put aside if the reader is not interested in deep physics. Manyreferences to relevant authors are given all along the text. It should be areference available to all the people seriously involved insuperconductivity. Excellent book on PLD - a must read!
Extensive information on pulsed laser deposition that was cutting edge when it was published, much of which remains current and valuable today.

Buy it if you want to understand PLD
I am a researcher in this field. This book is the bible in this field. It talks about different aspects of PLD and different kinds of materials. Highly recommend to you if you are in this field.

Summarises the field well
Though this book is now ten years old, its papers should still hold up well. It surveys the then new field of making thin films by using pulses of high intensity laser light. The papers are written by experts in these methods.Read more

a brilliant and extremely interesting scientist; a disappointing book
John Bardeen was one of nature's prodigies.
Overall, a Fine Portrait
I should really write two reviews. One with a rating of four stars, and one with five. Then the average will be 4.5, which I feel is the right rating. I have only two complaints. First, the discussion of minority carrier injection was not clear to me. I went back to the April 1992 issue of "Physics Today." There, the discussion is done just right,the importance of holes is clear. Second, the issue of "genius" and it's identification and cultivation in chapter 17 did not appeal to me. In my opinion, if we were to conclude with a jumping off point from Bardeen's life, it would be to address the question "why is he so unknown today?" That would have been a good epilogue. It's a good question. In W. H. Cropper's book "Great Physicists: etc." Bardeen is not mentioned. A real shame. Bardeen easily ranks with the physicists in that book. The truth about genius
