3-0 out of 5 stars Good for analogue basics, but...
This book is geared towards the absolute beginner. It illustrates well the basics of analogue audio both for video and live production. However, although being a good 'hands on' book for the beginner, it does not treatany of the more important technical concepts in professional broadcast.Apart from the above, the book fails to deal with digital audio invideo-production and so misses on an important milestone in the modernaudio field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in the history of sound
Tim Fabrizio and George Paul's 1996 book, "The Talking Machine - an Illustrated Compendium," ranks as the finest book ever written on the history of the phonograph. Lavishly illustrated, it is both authoritativeand eminently readable. It is hard to imagine anyone, even the authors, improving upon this work, however they have done exactly that with"Discovering Antique Phonographs." What is so remarkable aboutthis achievement is that this new book serves as a rich sequel to theirfirst, yet stands independently as a superb work on its own. It is notsurprising that Fabrizio and Paul were able to come up with hundreds morehistoric and fascinating phonographs to picture in the new book. What issurprising, however, is that this new volume, like their first, includes avery comprehensive history of sound recording. Amazingly, the authors coverthe same historic ground as they did in their first work without beingrepetitious or redundant. They approach the same story from a whole newperspective, so that while both books are complete and authoritative ontheir own they are superbly complementary. Although the text is engaginglywritten, most readers will probably be seduced by the stunning photographyand extremely detailed captions. The selection of rare phonographsillustrated in large color pictures is stunning, yet every one tells astory or makes a point -- nothing is an extraneous throwaway just for cheapthrills. Like the first book, "Discovering Antique Phonographs"can be read from cover to cover as a serious work of history, or opened toany page and savored in random doses. In fact, the amount of information tobe found in the captions makes the text, wonderful as it is, almostsuperfluous! These captions offer a vast amount of detail, which theseskilled writers bring to life with charm and wonder. Like its predecessor"The Taking Machine," "Discovering Antique Phonographs"is a bargain and a must for anyone interested in the history of thephonograph.

5-0 out of 5 stars What can I say?
This book tells all u need to create your own recording studio, your recording sessions, making your demos and/or making or selling your own music plus creating your own label and publisher. I haven't even read it yet but ASAP I will. Just finished reading Conducting Technique by Brock McElheran and Everything You Need to Know About the Record Industry by Kashif.
3-0 out of 5 stars i guess i expected something else...
...i expected the book to also weave into the "mix" the new digital world with many of these expensive machines now so cost-effectively reduced to computer programs-- BUT, it is detailed and all the basic principles and most terms still apply. it just seems so dated to be giving so much attention to what must have been quickly fading technology like 4 track tape machines even in 1996 (print date...). if you want to do it "the old fashioned way" then it seems to be a great book-

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book,but not a great book!
I own a copy of this book and I am a bit displeas- ed. It doesn't dwell with using compressors or any effects units. Which is most important,to the homerecordist. If there are others out there who own this book, also. Iwould like to hear from you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best Book on Audio
This is the best book on audio I have seen.It covers a broad range of topics in great depth.5-0 out of 5 stars The most authorative work I have seen.
I have been playing around with amplifiers and recording equipment for a while now - never had formal education in audio engineering, but I do have some electronic background. This book has helped me a lot in refining my recording techniques, my audio system itself and furthered my understanding of audio systems from microphone placement to cabling, speaker placement, phono cartridge alignment to name but a few. Whatever subject I sought advice on, this book has so far provided me with the answers. I would go as far as saying that whatever this book does not cover is not relevant to audio systems. One word of caution though, this book is not like a "cookbook". You have to have an electronic background in order to make full use of the book - as the title rightly puts it, it is intended for engineers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook For Sound Engineers
You MUST buy this book!Pretend you did not see the price and order this book.It is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have ever run across. It contains more than 1550 pages of information, diagrams, schematics, and just about anything else you could ever think to need.Covers everything from Accoustic Theory to Zener Diodes (I don't know what they are either...I haven't read that far yet!).I am planning to use this as a refresher for myself (that is what my schooling is in) and for training more sound techs at my church.Read more

The book is very deep in some topics but is very poor in design formulas. The formulas should be included, explained and can be skipped by the readers who are not keen on mathematics.
