4-0 out of 5 stars an eye opener on Protools in practice
Excellent explanations of the fundamental concepts of Protools. Lots of practical hints and tips (e.g. on the usage of "Aux in" tracks). The focus is not on explaining every Protools feature (that's what the manuals are for), but to give you a clear view on how to use Protools in daily practice. The authors know how to teach (which is not the same as just knowing how to use a tool without being able to explain to others). I would have given 5 stars if there hadn't been several editing errors in (this first edition of) the book (e.g. screenshots not matching the associated description). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For British Use Only
The 3-star rating reflects kind of an average between the useability for a British radiophile (probably 5 stars) and a US radiophile (probably 1 star).Though the book is well written and factual, it is written for the British radio enthusiast.Although all radios operate the same in any country, radio models, tubes (valves), test equipment and nomenclature in general are totally different in the UK than in the US.This makes it difficult to translate back and forth and I found myself trying to figure out what a particular term meant or what the equivalent US numbered tube might be.Not a quick read or reference if you're from west of "the pond."

4-0 out of 5 stars Really great book!Very hands--on
This is a great book.It tells you in brief, concise language how to achieve quality recording for all sorts of instruments and situations. It also explains various effects as well as digital recording techniques.I use it frequently when doing home recording.5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, No-nonsense Guide for Home-Recording Engineers!
I recently purchased a "Small Home Studio" so that I could create my own Ambient, Electronic music CD's.However, I have very little actual experience in recording. The learning curve can be more than alittle steep. There is so much to consider when attempting to put togethera quality recording. It's almost impossible to remember all the details atrecording time! However, Paul White has put together an excellent, handyresource explaining all the myriad technical aspects of the recordingprocess in the Modern Recording Studio...In Plain English! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Where is the beef?
This book from cover to cover is no more than what an introduction would be. I did not find anything in this book that taught me one thing beyond the most basic information there is. I find it insulting the author thinks he has offered something useful to the readers. I use it as a place mat, it is the most valuable use for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Missed the Target
It's basic. No, I mean *really* basic.I'm not sure who the target audience for this book is.Maybe folks who might be mastering an audio project, but who don't know what the audio spectrum is, or how parametric equalization works, or exactly what a compressor is.To be fair, it does bill itself as "The1-0 out of 5 stars Too small and basic

3-0 out of 5 stars Hopelessly out of date
Not much point in buying this book unless you enjoy living in the past. Far too many musicians like to do that, in fact. There have been so many advances in amplifier technology in the past 13 years that this book can only interest those who collect vintage amps or are just looking for old sound. And there are better resources than this for that.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not even one fourth of Rock 'N' Roll
Seemed to be more of a book for the author to get out his obsession with amplifiers and a photography hobby. Had some historical significance but missed great opportunities to explain basic electronic significance of different types of amplifiers, including diagrams from involved schematics to simple textbook layouts. Difficult to refer back to as the book lacks both an index and a glossary so the reader is forced to search all over for information. The book lacks a "how-to" guide for selecting an amplifier based on the reader's level of performance/learning, even using 1993 date of publication examples. I could care less about vinyl coverings and the glue to hold them or how different companies in the 1950s started as much as I would like to see explanations about reverb units, parallel and series signals, splitting signals, and how different effects, both pedal and rack type interact with different types of amplifiers. It would also be nice to see the plusses and minuses of different manufacturers' offerings. The book didn't explain a lot of the basics well, including bias.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ever heard of Peavey

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth the time
I bought this book because I was looking for help in hooking up my stereo system, in my car. I'm still looking... This book MIGHT have been half-way helpful if they had some more detailed wiring diagrams. Although the fact that everything in this book is something along the lines of 10+ old tech. The guy with the mullet in alot of the install pictures and the presance of tape decks all over the place really tells you just how outdated it is.

3-0 out of 5 stars It could be handy...
Well this book wasn't written for the pros. If you're a profressional looking for new tricks and techniques then this book isn't for you. However if you're an amateur installer, or simply a do-it-yourself-er, this book can be extremely handy. It gives a few time-saving tips, as well as cautions you and tells you where most mistakes are made. This book was handy for me, a do-it-yourself-er, and helped me avoid a very tragic mistake that saved me about $... To me the book was worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
I have used this book mostly for ideas. And building my doors and front pods. It covers many helpful things most other books don't. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on sound.. This is it
Where do I start? In a nutshell, this book *IS* the only book to have on sound if your only buying one.No lie.My background... 20 years ago I used to be the "The Amp Dr" fixing commercial PA systems, amps, etc. I have a much better background on sound than most, I was an electrical engineer after that, designing power supplies, and other analog interfaces to digital equipment. Most of that has been dormant for the last 20 years, but I recently decided to make documentaries, and as two of my first projects deal with music, sound seemed pretty important.I got several books on sound, I figure buy six, one has to be good. You can save your money, this book was the one in six.
5-0 out of 5 stars A rare 'how to' book that delivers actual content!
I've often been taken in by large reference books that promise to be a comprehensive guide to a subject, but turn out to be a lot of filler(screen shots of PC applications, or an excuse for the author to give lots of less-than-useful anectodal stories, etc.)
5-0 out of 5 stars A Top Resource for Anyone who does Serious DV Recording
This book is a top shelf resource. It is useful to both novices and those with more experience. Starting with the very basics, and that does involve some physics, it works its way through virtually all aspects of sound production for digital video.
