3-0 out of 5 stars Little Short and Generic
This book is somewhat short and generic, but for the price I shouldn't complain to much. If you are looking for something to assist you with mastering your audio, pass this book up and get one of the more expensive one on Amazon. On the other hand, if you have no idea what the mastering process is and you want to know as well as listen to examples of mastered and unmastered audio, buy this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks detailed content and specifics
I decided to purchase this book to gain some more insight into mastering techniques and theory. Have to say, I am really disappointed as I have spent my money for no real value.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Wanted More
Audio Systems Technology Level 1 provides a basic platform for understanding the installation process of audio systems. While the information is well written and easy to understand, as a person with real world knowledge of audio systems, I was expecting more technical information. So if you are a Sound Engineer or DJ with road experience, you might want to start at Level 2.If you are a raw recruit in the audio world, this is a great book. The format is excellent, with quiz questions at the end of each chapter, a chapter on first aid and safety, and information about where to take tests to become a certified Audio Systems Installer.I know I will be purchasing level two and level three. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, lots of theory, examples...

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book "If you have some experience with recording"
I bought this book for a class and for refrence at home for a setup I had just put together. I was a beginner when i had bought it and had little knowledge on the concepts of decibels, MIDI, signal flow, or the physics of sound,(which are some of the topics covered in this book). 3-0 out of 5 stars Do I have the patience to want to sit down with this??
No-but, hey, to each his own. Right? Honestly, a very comprehensive book(much like a high-school science text book...outstanding). All meat with no potatoes. If you're studying to go into the field of engineering as a living or are an electronics genius, this review is sheer blaspheme. If you want to make good music on your home studio, get The Musician's Guide to Home Recording and a good dose of spirit- then press record. Peace.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for starting your own home studio!!
This book gives a general overview of what you have to keep in mind when you want to start your own home studio. It describes theoretical concepts like acoustics as well as the more practical stuff like setting up proper electrical wiring. It also gives a clear overview of the different types of audio equipment you can encounter in your search for the perfect studio. The book is well structured and there are some ironic touches added as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally Something I can Get my Head Around
I do home recording as a hobby. In the past I have taken recording classes and usually ended up getting bogged down in the science. But as a hobbist I always wanted something that would show me how to do things in the studio in a fun and practicle manner - something I would want to wrap my hands and head around. Finally Bill Gibson has produced it.I bought all three books.I love the CD's and the work examples. I have taken some of the concepts and reproduced them in my own project studio. What a diffence it makes! My musician friends are very pleased with the improved quality of our sessions and recordings.Let's face it: From a fundamental level quality recording is really a very hard thing to do.This series of books makes it easier and fun. Thanks Bill!

3-0 out of 5 stars What A Comprehensive Book Means to You
The Audio Pro Home Recording Course (a comprehensive multimedia audio recording text) excelled in showing basics like mike placement augmented with audio clips that let you hear what the text wrote about. It started off too basic, then built to great interest, then faded fast with too much that was too basic and too little that was important.Like, lots of clips about where to place a mic over a drum set, but little to nothing on how to set various effects and processes. The cover picture shows an engineer at the console looking at artists performing, but not a piece of paper in sight to show who does what, what notes to take, how to keep records, how to create a decision making process and who to include it.This is only Vol. I.It apparently takes all three volumes to be be "comprehensive", so prepare to invest in all to get the gems found in each one.I learned a lot, there were reference gems to treasure, but "comperehensive", well, I'd need to spend another $[money] to know the rest of the plot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A meaningful title - good book
A real course on recording and mixing techniques. The 2 supplied CDs are full of examples (each one explained in the book) which let you listen to what happens when you do so and so. Of course is better for you to re-apply what you learn on your own gear, but listening to the CD is like attending a course with a teacher explaining.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This title is outdated.
I purchased this title thinking it would be a good guide for the current Traktor DJ Studio software. It is not. Though it was printed in 2005, it appears to be a guide for the original version of the software. It is impossible to follow the set-up instructions because all of the screenshots and most of the commands are now different. If you are using the current 3.0 version, this will be of little - or no - use to you. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars really not so practical
Don't get caught by the name of the book. The whole book just tells you the tip of the iceberg... a little of this a little of that and just few stuff is truly practical. If you are totally new in this field, go buy it. Also i have "Modern Recording Techniques" and i noted that they are very similar if not i dare to say they are the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reevaluation
After seeing what other people have given 4 and 5 stars to, I definitely have to give Practical Recording Techniques 5 stars! I thought I was supposed to leave some room for growth!

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Recording Techniques
Here's a useful and comprehensive introduction to professional audio recording aimed primarily at the beginning and intermediate level recording engineer, but useful also for people like me doing home recording.Itcovers all aspects of equipment, sound, techniques and procedures.Inaddition to what you'd expect (it's recent enough to cover digitalapplications), there are sections on spoken word recordings, on-locationrecording, hum prevention (the electrical, not the oral, variety), how tojudge sound quality, and a short but interesting chapter on how an engineercan learn to listen to the art, and not just the sound, of the music beingrecorded. The Bartletts offer sound advice for how to mic variousinstruments (well, how would *you* go about micing bagpipes or a hammereddulcimer?). It contains a very useful guide for analyzing and correctingbad sound.Additionally, there are appendices covering the technicalitiesof dB, SMPTE and a suggested reading list. The glossary is excellent.Forsomeone like me, it filled in all sorts of gaps in my knowledge - now I'mfamiliar with the Fletcher-Munson effect, I know exactly what an ORTF micplacement is and how to go about clearing up muddy sound. There is littleor no input about specific brands or models of gear, but at 458 pages, there's not much room for that, and it's not that kind of book anyway. Thumbs up. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing after initial promise
If you are only interested in "spoonfed" recipe loudspeaker designs, this book will be great for you. It does cover some important theory initially and has some very clear and succinct illustrations, but I felt that it was a let down of my expectations, especially if you pay too much attention to things like the cover illustration (way too "hi-end" and complex for this book!).3-0 out of 5 stars Thorough introduction - worthless projects
Great introduction to loudspeaker design theory.Very good, in-depth discussion of crossovers with usable equations.4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner
This book covers the basic aspects of loudspeaker design in an easy tounderstand language and includes useful software on the CD-ROM. If you wantto build your own speaker system, this is the book for you. Don't expectit, however, to go further in mathematical or theoretical contents. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars the
This book was written by two professors at Cambridge University, who are also founders of the CEDAR Company, which is on the leading edge of audio restoration technology. The book consisely summarizes several of the audio restoration ideas developed by the authors that have been published in various journals. The book focuses on Bayesian analysis as a means for determining the most probable nature of audio defects (clicks, pitch variations and so forth) based on observed, corrupted data.Bayesian inference is also used to find maximum a posteriori characteristics of the underlying, uncorrupted signal.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, Tom !
Excellent introduction to surround sound. Tom is definitely more than a great teacher and legendary figure that I had the opportunity to meet at the IIM-Paris (Institut International du Multimdia)... he's also a very good writer ! Buy his book, it's a great one !

1-0 out of 5 stars 5.1 Channel Surround Sound: Up and Running
It is true that surround sound is a topic that has only recently beenresubmitted to the scholarly and professional community forreconsideration. A book on this topic, especially by an accomplished expertsuch as Holman, should be welcomed. It is somewhat disappointing thereforethat his efforts fall short and his book reads like a direct outcome ofintroductory lectures on the subject. There is a certain lack of precisionand lucidity in its structure and format. Scholarly references have beenalmost completely omitted despite the fact that the professional world hasbeen concerned with surround sound for years now and there are manypublications available in form of technical papers; instead there is a longlist of soon to be outdated addresses and phone numbers of respectivemanufacturers of surround sound equipment. Many technical terms arementioned -- often quite casually, but very few explained in detail;information tends to be scattered and redundant without ever reaching aparticular depth. I would recommend this book to a novice in soundrecording if it weren't for the many terms that lack thorough explanation. It seems regrettable that what should have remained an introductory paperon the topic was artificially padded to become a book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rather good book for an audiophile.
So, I've finished to read this book yesterday. I think it's rather good one (note that one can find not enough titles to get an information about improving of 5.1 channel surround sound). For me this book is what I needand think that it worth to buy it... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many bells and whistles
This book has lots of good information. Unfortunately, it has lots more too, most of which is really annoying and distracting. The problems with this book are this:
2-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended for beginners
This book has lots of pretty pictures and is good for getting a general overview of the digital audio world. The problem is that the writting is filled with so much jargon that a beginner can get really lost. Some of the terminology needs some more clarification. Because of that, I can only give this 2 stars.
