5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and comprehensive source of information
The Audio Dictionary is a great book for anyone who's looking for a concise, clear explanation of any audio-related term. It's not (and does not pretend to be) a complete treaty like the Handbook for Sound Engineers, but offers a quick and reliable solution for those questions for which you don't have an answer from the top of your head and don't want to spend 2 hours reading the complete scientific explanation.
5-0 out of 5 stars essential for all audio engineers
When I first got into audio engineering there was no way of understanding some of the more technical concepts I was expected to know. This book makes it really easy to understand a lot of the terms, I still always keep this book handy when I'm reading an AES journal article, just to help me out if there is something I don't understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never-fail reference

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Theatre Sound
John Leonard's Theatre Sound is an excellent read for everyone from the beginner to an advanced sound designer. The refreshing material in his book isn't overloaded with technical jargon, but goes over everything for a full understanding of the subject. It's also loaded with thoughts on theory, from sound effect design to speaker localization.A very good read, and highly recommended! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Just not good enough
I bought this book because of Paul White's reputation as an expert in the field of music production & Recording and his regular highly praised contributions to UK-based pro music magazine: Sound On Sound. As a beginner, but with a growing interest in music technology, I found myself scouring the internet for explanations of things such as: what is a channel strip, aux send, aux return, TS/TRS jack, balanced vs. unbalanced cabling, what does overdubbing mean, what is a sub-mix, because these basics things were either omitted or poorly covered in this book. The chapters on the sampling theory, and zero latency monitoring end up being just plain confusing. The midi chapter is good. If you want a balanced well written comprehensive beginner book I recommend you get a copy ofthe Home Recording for Dummies book, its sooooooooo much better than this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice introduction
This is a very nice compendium of information in a field that can be intimidating to the novice.I was not completely unfamiliar with recording in general, having recorded once (long ago) in a local studio and having owned a chinsy four-track.However, a trip into the recording section of Guitar Center was overwhelming, and browsing around Digidesign & Opcode's websites for basic information was like trying to learn addition from a differential equations text.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Informative for raw beginner only
I read this "book" and listened to the CD with sample mixes in about a half hour. It seems fine as a primer for a total beginner (which I am) but leaves you feeling more like you just read a magazine article than a book. It gives you a few ideas but just doesn't develop them to any depth. I haven't read the author's other works, but maybe if you slapped them all together you'd get a decent book out of it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A few good ideas for beginners, but overpriced
This book is moderately helpful, if a little thin. This is not a 40-pound tome with facts and charts and cross-references that you will keep next to your mixing board; but it will get you thinking in the right direction and actually has some pretty important stuff to say about EQ, delays, limiting, and the sequence for setting up your mixes. The included CD is useful for demonstrating the effect of the techniques he is talking about, and in fact the CD is the only advantage this book has over others of its ilk.Personally, I recommend The Mixing Engineer's Handbook (Mix Pro Audio Series) by Bobby Owsinski, which is everything this book isn't.
2-0 out of 5 stars Is the truth out there?
Once again another book which is light on true solutions.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dear Amazon, Please Take this book off your shelves
The only audio book I've NEVER been able to finish, written by the only man I would like to see depart the educational world along with the university. This is a degrading piece of trash to any 'doctor' out there. Just take a visit to UMass Lowell and see the impact this book has caused on its students.
3-0 out of 5 stars wrong title.....
William Moylan looks to be an expert in the industry and he tries to write a book that's different than other books; no straight point to the topic and no cook book.He is a professor at university and he knows about stuff that other people don't. He can write wonderfully about audio and use his powerful English to get you into it.So he thinks he can write such a book.Ok till now everything sounds good and you think this is gonna be a great book right? But the problem starts when he finds out that he doesn't have enough material to write in his book.Like the other person said this book had to be fewer than 150 pages not 320.He tells you the same thing over and over and over in the same page.He talks about some obvious stuff. One of my biggest problems with this book was that author tells you what you should be but fails when he advises you how to be it.He mentions many times that you have to develop a perfect hearing but doesn't really tell you how. But don't get me wrong I still highly recommend this book cause of its exclusive information but the title of this book is wrong.May be a title like "Hearing and Recording" would work better than the current one.Overall I give it a bad rate for wasting my time and 2.5 stars for the material that's included in this book which you won't find it anywhere else.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is a book with a difference
Most books rechew the same basic homerecording info you already read dozens of times. This book stands out with info you don't read anywhere else. It's mostly about training and development of hearing.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not promising.
I looked in the preview pages for this book. The first two URLs were 404s. There was a hilariously muddled attempt to explain bit depths, but the author had it mixed up with dynamic range and ended up making very little sense. He moves on to base-two integers, and, to his credit, gets his powers of two right. But then he has one of those moments of chummy idiocy so beloved of bad expository writers who think they're trying to hold the interest of readers who couldn't care less about the material: "Our illustrator didn't want to draw all 65,536 stair steps, but you get the idea". Hyuk hyuk hyuk he funny funny ha ha haaa!!1!
2-0 out of 5 stars Too much filler
I am just getting into the home recording game and was looking for some texts to get started. This book fell woefully short of my expectations. It reads like a report written by a student the night before the report is due. There are literally hundreds of "Hot Links" with half page screen shots of the associated site scattered throughout-every other page at least.I would say that easily a third of the material in this book is these links and screen shots, and they are injected between the sections of text in such a way that it seriously impairs the flow of the material. There are some great tidbits of information and insights, but the mass of "Hot Link" filler makes it hard to recommend buying this.Just do a web search for "home recording" to get the links for free and spend your money on a better text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great overview of desktop recording
This book contains an enormous amount of material, clearly explained and well organized. It was published a few years ago, but it's as helpful to me now as it was when I bought it. I'd guess that an advanced desktop-audio engineer already knows most of what's in it. To a novice or intermediate user, though -- I'm somewhere between -- it's an excellent resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!
This is the bible of audio interfacing. I truly could not get along without this book. It is written in a clear and concise manner and is well indexed. It truly covers just about every scenario. The only source that is required beyond this book for information on the studio interconnect jungle is a copy of the local Electrical Code. This due to the reality that what is best for the interconnecting and powering of an audio production facility is sometimes frowned upon by local codes. If you check most other reference materials on this subject this text will be in the bibliography. It is somewhat technical in nature so it is not for the laymen. Though don't let that put you off it will make you stronger for the effort. It is truly in my estimation the best source for the right way if you will.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, Electrical Reference Handbook for Audio
What's interesting about this book is that it covers aspects related to audio installations that is not normally covered in audio related books.5-0 out of 5 stars My Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written! Well worth reading!!!
I've made a spot on my bookshelf for Digital Audio Essentials from O'Reilly Publishing. Bruce and Marty Fries are authors par excellance. Rarely will you encounter the fine points of audio so eloquently expressed. I've read several books about digital audio. Typically, as the author attempts an failed explanation I find myself thinking, "Boy, if I didn't already fully understand that concept, I'd be totally stumped!"
5-0 out of 5 stars useful information...............
the value of this text will ultimately be a function of one's mathematics background as well as the degree of familiarity with audio. personally, i found the book to be an excellent "update" to the previous text..!! keep in mind that the field of digital audio is changing SO RAPIDLY that it is virtually impossible to keep up with the changes ...from an authors standpoint........be that as it may, most will derive more than satisfactory information from the revised edition.!

5-0 out of 5 stars Virtually every facet of the latest technology being used to capture and edit music
Bruce and Marty Fries' Digital Audio Essentials shows how to legally download and share music, how to hook a PC or Mac to a home stereo, how to record music to hard drive: virtually every facet of the latest technology being used to capture and edit music. Newcomers in particular will appreciate clear explanations of digital audio features, tutorials which are easy to follow, and both hardware and software recommendations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Reinforcement In Plain English
If you just want to run the PA and not take 2 years out of your life to get a degree and learn a ton of new terminology, then this book is for you! It is very beginner friendly. Anyone can walk through the pages of this book and learn to run a sound system.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best For Beginners
I knew absolutley nothing about live sound before I bought this book, but now I actually have some knowledge of it. Its a great book for newbies, but don't get it if you've got even a moderate amount of experience setting up PA systems. Now that I've read it I really understand how to wire, test, and run a small PA system. My only gripe is that it doesn't go to in depth on miking drums, which I kind of hoped it would do. Then again, for most small venues, drum mikes aren't necessary. It also spens a lot of time on feedback control, which isn't a bad thing, it just seems to be one of the main focuses of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Live Sound For Musicians - Review
Live Sound For Musicians is a well-written book.It obviously comes from a man who has set up many PA systems, and has learned "what not to do" from first-hand experience.I purchased the book about a year after I bought and began using my first PA system, and I found the book to be quite helpful. However, if you've been on the road with your band for 5 years, the content may be a bit too basic, since you will already have been forced to use trial-and-error to solve many of the problems discussed in the book. Rudy Trubitt's use of past experience and humor make the book easy and pleasant to read.I highly recommend it for anyone getting into the details of live sound reinforcement. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, yet EZ
I have a lot of books on this subject, but this is the easiest and most clearly written book for the beginning home recordist I have seen.Mitch knows his business and also how to teach. He includes all necessary technical terms but explains them through simple analogy. Its almost like having a personal tutor there to help you.He anticipates and provides soulutiions for common problems that may, and probably will, arise. The book is thorough in that he takes you from shopping for and buying the right equipment, to recording and burning your music CD and distributing it online.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for all interested in learning home recording!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I've found of its type.
Mr. Millard has done an extraordinary job of documenting the recording industry from Edison's invention of the phonograph to the present day.He integrates the social, technical and business issues into an easy-to-read,almost "unputdownable" form.Parallels in broadcasting andmotion pictures are given the necessary coverage as well.To a student ofrecorded sound, the references and bibliography are invaluable. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beginners book
I had no idea on how to do PC recording, now I know. However, I put 4 star instead of 5 because of the book is not up-to-date enough. The PC requirement descriped in the book is kinda old, I think they need to keep the book update for every year (if that is possible). For example, 1G or 2G RAM is quite common these days, but the book still staying in the 256-512M age. But in general, it is a great book on how to start out on PC recording.

3-0 out of 5 stars PC Recording Studios For Dummies (For Dummies)
The book is not bad for someone who is new to recording; although, the technical information written in the book is outdated! Author mentioned for example that USB2 is brand new think in computing; I have USB2 for several years and the copyright of this book is 2005! Also while writing of this book, author use Mac computer and not PC as mentioned in the title of this book. In examples of software, author works with Mac software costing $1000 and another software (Pro Tools) that run on both, PC and Mac. Author mentioned in the book, that 32 track recording software is not sufficient. The version of Pro Tools that is not limited to 32 tracks starts at $4000. Author should use examples for Sonar or Cubase to keep trend with home recording engineers. Those software are professional quality and financially friendlier. About $500.
