5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!
This book is probably the most beneficial book I have ever bought! I have been really trying to get into the old vintage tube amps and when I saw this, I figured that Fender was probably the best place to start! This book is worth 5x's what they actually charge!

4-0 out of 5 stars anorak bonanza!
To some eyes, a paean to the mecca of tone. To others, a Geek Fiesta. The casual rock fan/guitarist will find at least something in this - plenty of luscious photes of delightful old grandpa amps of the sort that spur observations of the They Just Don't Make Them Like They Used To variety. The owner of a Fender Amp will be thrilled and excited to be able to identify in exacting detail how old and rare his (or her) beauty is, and from what era it comes from. But pity his (or her) friends. 4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent history
This is a seemingly very complete history of all fender amps and effects boxes - a pleasure to read and full of good gossip too.Detailed descriptions of the advances introduced with each line, as well as tube specs!I wish it had a collector's value/price guide as well, but perhaps that is hard to generalise. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on an under-served subject
This is not a book that introduces and uses signal processing concepts for the sake of itself. Instead, the goal of the book is to create sounds, learn the tools and theory behind creating such sounds, and grasp the essentials of many sophisticated physical modeling concepts in particular. The book is quite thin, but don't let this fool you. The author chose to leave out quite a few details so that this did not turn into another 1000 page treatise on computer music. Thus some basic topics in signals, systems, and filter design are not fleshed out to their fullest extent. To this end, the book has an extensive reference section so that if you are unfamiliar with a particular physics or DSP topic, you can research it yourself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful long-term goal, but not with today's hardware
"Real Sound Synthesis for Interactive Applications" by Perry R. Cook describes elementary and advanced techniques to simulate the audio components of dynamic systems using physics. While the book is not specifically directed toward game development, the application to game development is clear. The book's organization of the major themes covered is easily to follow through three sections that detail digital audio, sound modeling, and simulation of real world instruments. The book spans sixteen chapters and appendices totaling 248 pages.5-0 out of 5 stars It's a lot more than a cook book
Are you a pretty good C++ programmer? Have you ever wanted to have your computer output sounds like footsteps or musical instruments that (a) sound real and (b) are continuously responsive to the user's control?Did you discover that it was basically impossible to do it by stitching together prerecorded samples, and you couldn't think of any other way to do it?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars really informative book, nice photos
Nice color photos, easy read although there is so much information and names, one can get confused on who is who and what company they started and worked for. Covers the complete history of the phonograph and the records that play on it. Explains how it came about, all the patent wars between people and technology that changed the phonograph early on. Nice sized book, easy to handle, easy read. Beautiful color photos of phonographs of all types. Lots of information. Worth having if you love old phonographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive History of the Talking Machine
This book is the size of a coffee table book, but you can actually read it and learn something. It is difficult to find a good history of the phonograph, especially the business history of how it developed. This book fills the bill.It also features a large number of clear photographs so you will know what the author is talking about. If you are interested in antique talking machines, or need a good coffee table book, this is a good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is truly a remarkable book. If you are interested in the subject of phonographs and how they got started then this is the book for you. It is filled with the history of the phonograph. Especially interesting was thestory of how Nipper the dog came about. You can't go wrong with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marshalls Rock!
This book gives a very detailed look into the inner workings of a legendary amplifier and its maker. The name Marshall has become synonymous with Rock and Roll for over 40 years. Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman,Pete Townshend, Angus Young, Eddie Van Halen, Dave Murray, the list of Marshall stalwarts goes on. Some of the biggest names in Rock have used this amp and continue to use it today. Look at any band's stage setup and you are very likely to see a Marshall or two (or three!)in their backline. This book tells you pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about the Marshall Amp. It takes you into the factory and explains in detail what goes into making a legend. All facets are covered. It even contains circuit diagrams for most of the models in the years 1962 to 1992. A beautiful color section shows the Marshall as it should be seen with some of the amps in custom coverings that have been offered by Marshall and company. It also gives an in depth look at the Man behind the Amp, James C. Marshall, who continues to provide us with the trademark thunderous sound so associated with the Marshall Amplifier. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Rock music, muscians, or their equipment. I think it will fascinate you and hopefully give you an appreciation for this remarkable piece of musical history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference For Marshall Enthusiasts.
This book does a great job of covering all of the bases that make up Marshall amplifiers. The provision of schematics is really helpful in troubleshooting and just seeing how the amp works. The color section is ajoy to look at, and the reprinted catalogs are as well.A great book atany price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Review of the Best Amplifiers Available
This is one comprehensive book. It is a purist's dream. It has pictures of Marshalls dating back to the Hendrix days, including schematics, and closups of the interiors, exteriors, and platforms of the heads, and the cabinets, ranging from the first "BlueBreakers" (Eric Clapton) 2 X 12" cabs to the early 'Pete Townsend' 8 X 12's (that roadies revolted over.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading/reference
Regrettably out of print for a number of years, this textbook is a must-have for both the aspiring and the experienced recording engineer. Although the technology is now somewhat dated (for example, there is a notable lack of information on digital audio). Others have tried to fill the gap this book left in the past 10 years - none have succeeded.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
This book is somewhat dull to read straight through. It includes alot of details that may not be relevant and gives alot of examples that may be completely useless to the reader. Many concepts and passages are repeated throughout the book. That being said, the book makes for an excellent reference for many circumstances. From studio microphone techniques to recording live events, this book gives in-depth details and offers more than just one suggestion for all situations. It also includes a 4 page sound glossary and a nearly 50 page general glossary. This is a great buy for any non-professional recording studio. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware, this is a Technical manual
I bought this thinking I could beef-up my knowledge on DVD-Audio and SACD. This is not what your looking for for in-depth info, its more of a technical engineers manual if anything with hardly any info on DVD-A or SACD with very, very small articles on these topics.I has more charts and technical data on very scientific data that only an engineer can decipher. Its put out by the people at Sony and Philips and gives you the same info that you can get in a tech magazine.Save your money, its not worth it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book really deserves to be called 'The Ultimate Digital Audio Bible'.It has anything and everything. From basic DSP to video, it's not limited to audio topics. When I read the reviews, I would not hope to read the book from the start, just use it as a reference to explain specific standard highlights. But this book is very readable.I loved it.If you are a computer eng. major who wants to dwell in DSP in any field, this book is great.I don't agree with the prejudice that the book is not very readable. There are sections that are more difficult, but the author explains things in very good analogies and examples.I must mention that I'm a comp. eng. a few months away from MS, so I may not be doing justice to the average reader. But I would never expect to find myself reading through that 700+ book with pleasure.Don't think, buy it.Then try and conceal this secret gem from others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for electronics engineers
First off, this book is in its fifth edition, and Amazon has lumped together reviews of all editions of this book. So the oldest review shown, written in 1998, is speaking of the 3rd edition, and reviews written prior to 2005 are talking about the 4th edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent new edition
As the satisfied user of an earlier edition, for me the big question was how much new stuff would there be in this update, given that at first glance the layout of the chapters is almost the same and subjects (such as microphones types and their uses, or studio acoustics) don't change very rapidly. But, dipping a bit deeper, that turned out to be deceptive. There really is a lot of new stuff in this one; it's also (even) more clearly written, and to get the extra material into the same space it is sharper, more concise. The content remains as authoritative as ever - the book really does deliver what it says on the cover - and without the irritating mateyness that so many books of this kind now impose on the reader. 5-0 out of 5 stars I found it very useful.
When my friends decided to make a band as a joke, I decided I'd pick this up.When a few of my friends decided to each learn a musical instrument at the same time, we thought it'd be fun to get together and make some really awful music under the guise of a fake band name.Yes, we're awfully bored an awful lot. After some thought, I thought I'd learn drums and perhaps some mixing on the side. With the help of this affordable little handbook, I was able to not only play some [bad] drums, but [bad] remix it when I was done. What could be better than that!Obviously, with my incredibly low expectations, I found this book to be very good.I guess that probably doesn't help much though, huh.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the holly grial
Well, I find that this book is really easy to read, and it probably is a good book if you know little about mixing, but to someone who has some knowledge on the subject, almost everything will sound familiar (at least). Also, if you're looking for a "cookbook" go find some other book, as this one hasn't fast and hard mixing rules.3-0 out of 5 stars Not the holly grial

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed.
I purchased this book hoping for in depth information on certain editing effects topics, for example "hard limiting".From what I read, the book does not go into much more detail than the information already available in the Help included with the program. I have returned this book and will be choosing a more costly one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great how-to book for Cool Edit Pro / Adobe Audition
I was in need of a resource to explain how to use a trial copy of Adobe Audition, the name Adobe gave to the software when they acquired it from Syntrillium. As of this writing, there don't seem to be any books on this subject under the new product name, so I tried Richard Riley's, hoping it would fill my need.I was not disappointed! His book does an excellent job of explaining how to put this software, by whatever name, to use.The items covered in the book appear to apply to both the prior Cool Edit and newer Audition products, so it should serve owners of the software under either name equally well.It provided a great deal of "put it to use" information, and was an excellent value. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Title doesn't properly reflect subject matter
Not that this is really a bad book, maybe a little dated, but the title really doesn't reflect the subject matter. This book deals more with the math and science (formulas and equations) behind "live" studio recording philosophies/practices than it does 'Audio' "PRODUCTION".There is some useful information for someone wanting to design their own multi-faceted video and audio recording studio (in the professional realm), but hardly anything geared towards home studio applications.Part of the reason I bought this book was because I saw it had a section on acoustics, and I am currently trying to read up on everything I can about acoustically treating my home studio. The "acoustics" chapter of this book dealt almost entirely with wind noise in air ducts and tonal vibrations due to large blower motors (that you might encounter in a large studio facility).

5-0 out of 5 stars Review on "Sound Systems for Worship."
I scanned this book after buying it. I definetely plan on reading this. It is a very useful book. True, it has a lot of information that goes over my head because I've never had classes in communications electronics, for one thing. But it looks very useful for my music career in the near future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Church Sound Resource
This book provides just about everything you would want to know about church sound systems. It may be a bit below a true Sound Engineer, but for the rest of us it is great. It doesn't cover all products but the general knowledge is there and for all but the pure novices it can be made to fit just about any product. It also makes a great reference book to keep on the shelf for thoses times things go wrong. ... Read more
