Why did this book get slammed by the previous reviewer?

For the beginner and intermediate, this is a great help.
This book has most of the basic information you really need to get from "clueless" to "have a clue." It's written in simple English and will set you on the road to being able to make sense out ofaudio whether you're in a basement or getting started as a professional.It's also very helpful to people in radio who produce spots and promos.

NOT "Advanced" and overpriced
I was very eager to receive this book. I follow Ty Ford's reviews in Pro Audio Review and respect his opinions. However, the title of "Advanced Audio Production Techniques" is misleading. The book is anything butadvanced. I was deeply disappointed.Read more

Excellent book on early phonographs
The book Phonographs With Flair came out a few years ago, and it's one of the better books on the subject.The photos are excellent and it covers many different models from 1890s thru the 1970s.Included are many photos of very oddball models, many of which are probably near extinction today.

Same Book As Audio In Media With Infotrac
This text is a broad-based approach to audio for radio/TV/film, and music recording. The emphasis is on audio for production students rather than for engineers, and the text covers informational, perceptual, and aesthetic aspects of sound as they apply to each stage of the production process-from planning to post-production.

An industry primer
This was my college text for Broadcasting in 1984/85 and I taught Radio Production from this book. I am a video editor (Avid) and a freelance audio engineer having mixed/recorded over 500 music performances. I STILL reference this book. It is easy to understand, direct and thorough; maybe the only textbook you might keep.

Misleading Title, Far Too Little Useful Information
This book has a lot of problems: the title is completely misleading; there's far too little useful information; and overall it's very short in length. The incomplete guide to audio ...
The basics of hifi equipment is clearly explained and the progression of sound systems from stereo to surround sound is clearly compiled, however these basics don't go beyond the very basics like what is a sub woofer and what components are needed for dolby digital sound. A Good Primer for the Novice
About 4-5 months ago, I decided to take the plunge and invest in some new audio components. Though a few of the components I owned had been considered bottom level high end, I wanted to go the separateamplifier/tuner route with a new cd player anda new pair of modern dayspeakers. In other words, kick it up a notch. Partial to Europeancomponents, I discovered the British publications HI FI Choice and What HiFi? Great glossy photos,with Excel/Powerpoint graphic charts ratingdifferent components by category.Very instrumental in assisting me purchasemy tuner,amp,headphones and cables.But now I thirsted for more. I washooked, a true audiophile was blossoming. There had to be a book somewhere.Much to my surprise one of the largest book chains here in the Northwest,who usually retails more shelf titles than anybody out there had not even asection devoted to high end audio. Fortunately I tracked this book downwith Amazon. Mostly written in a definitional format with well emphasizedheaders,it explains the sound process in an understandable manner withoutoverly technical descriptions which can befuddle and intimidate novices.Excellent diagrams and photos of various components are an additionalwelcome.Home theater and two channel audio are carefully distinguished andthe Brands and Choices section,which is always a subject of controversygiven it's subjective nature, was discussed in an unbiased manner. All thiswithout the snobbery often accompanied by discussions regarding high endaudio.My only gripe would be the segments on plugging in and set up. Theauthor seems to imply the process of interconnecting cables betweencomponents is difficult.Perhaps in home theater,(which I don't partake in)but for two channel audio, it's not a difficult process and the manuals Ihave seen are quite good with their illustrated instructions. Connecting isbut a a manner of minutes.The book is a solid audio primer. However as onepossibly becomes more serious minded he or shemight wish to look intoHarley's Guide to High End Audio, a huge manual which get's intophilosophic matters regarding the creation of sound with more emphasis ontechnical details.But for those getting their feet wet or wanting to buildthe confidence needed to walk into a high end shop and hold their own (andlet's face it, this experience can rank second only to walking into a cardealership), then you can be assured this book will provide you with thenecessary vocabulary. Reassuring to know that amidst the negative prognosisof some with regards to the future of two channel audio,(let's keep in mindthat the turntable is making a bit of a comeback too),people like Adams andHarley are committed to seeing that those with the interest and belief getthe necessary knowledge to put together a home system leading to many hoursof rewarding listening surpassing previous listening experiences. Not a badthing at that. And without in many instances, completely breaking thetill.And as I'm stilldoing research to purchase new speakers(probablywill buy within a couple of months of this review going on-line) andspeakers probably the toughest purchase with over 400 brands out there andpossibly committing to an arduous testing process,you can bet I willconsult this book on quite a few occasions before committing my cash. ...
