2-0 out of 5 stars Im a little worried
I just finished reading chapter one.I know it is quite early to make judgements, but already I'm starting to feel uneasy. As someone who has always enjoyed physics and math(and done well) I feel a little more insight into what is trying to be explained would be great.Im a student at the authors institution so I think thats why we have to use this book.I agree with others that there is a lot of waisted commentary so far, but it may prove to be usefull later. It just seems like a lot is thrown into one chapter and doesn't really mix well.More time, or more explanation about what is trying to be explained would greatly benefit the first chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Overall
I'm an undergrad physics/engineering student.I thought this book was reasonably well written and clear. It could benefit from more example problems, and some solution techniques.
3-0 out of 5 stars Wordy, some explanations are not clear, can be better.
I finished chapter 7. The authors do not show each step how to get the equations. Instead, a lot of math steps are missing. Unless you are good at math and recall all the fundamental physics equations, you will spend a lot of time to derive the equations by yourself. Without derive the equations, you can only accept the results without any insight. This book tries to cover introduction materials and more advanced materials.

1-0 out of 5 stars Solid book but.......
This is a really good book for someone who is invloved in the subject, otherwise it is a readers nightmare, I lost count on the times the author writes " but not have been fully understood"...all he does in Ch4 and Ch5 is tell you what someone designed and what they achieved, it is like he copied and pasted technical journal papers into this book, I would not advice anyone on buying it, hard work have been put in it, but it is still a BAD book.....consider LEDs by schubert.....

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook
I slept through all my lectures and got an A+ in the course because of this book. And no, I'm not from MIT and the authors of this book are not my professors.

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL
THIS BOOK IS AWFUL!!!!!! I've never seen a textbook as terrible as this. Notice how the guy who gave it 5 stars is from MIT. I wouldnt be surprised if it Sodini himself. Nice try Charles, but your textbook is terrible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Terrible
This is the worst textbook that I have ever read. The authors make way too many assumptions in deriving their equations. Also, their approximations seem very sketchy and go without proper justification. All of these assumptions and approximations make it near impossible to understand anything, and so the student is just left with a bunch of meaningless equations. The end-of-chapter problems and excercises thus become just plug-and-chug, and they teach the student absolutely nothing about semiconductor devices. The problems are only difficult in that the student must search through the 150 or so gigantic equations in each chapter to find the correct one to plug the numbers into. No insight is gained. ... This book has been revised and updated in a second edition.I suggest that you either buy this book used or the second edition new depending upon your needs and finances.
5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide for Highpower HF Amplifier Design
This is one fine book that deals with all the thoretical, practical and thermal aspects of Highpower Broadband amplifiers using Solidstate devices. Eventhough the examples and discussions are centered mainly around theMotorola RF Transistors, the principles can be extended to semiconductordevices manufactured by any manufacturer. The authors have dealt with thesubject matterin a thorough and a very easy to understand manner.I havebeen reading H.O.Granberg's articles in QST,RF Design and MotorolaApplication Notes since the early 80s as they were always packed with histremendous experience in the field of Solidstate RF design. No matterwhether you are a professional designer or an advanced radio amateur, youare sure to find it a gem in your collection of technical books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Self Study
Yes, 5 stars, but it depends on what you're looking for. This is a very good intro to Electronics concepts and systems. It doesn't go into great technical detail, but I find I understand a topic better if I read a book like this first, then progress on to more sophisticated treatments. It gives you a high-level understanding of the topic and keeps you from getting bogged down in the weeds. There are a lot of pages, but it's a quick read.If you're fairly new to amplifiers, oscillators, transmitters, receivers, etc., go thru this first, then select something like "Art of Electronics" for the follow-up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst electronics book ever!
Save your cash, this is a terrible book. It's just a collection of bad circuits with almost no explanation. Most important topics are just casually covered with insufficient detail. The circuits are confusingly drawn and most are poorly designed. Get a good book like "The Art of Electronics", don't waste your money like I did, stay away from this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple enough to understand
I have several college electronics text books. Compared to the others this one was basic enough for me to understand the bare basics. Only after using this book have I been able to use the more advanced books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Handled Cancellation Well
Needed to cancel the order after I was given incorrect information by my instructor. The cancellation was handled quickly with no difficulty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for university students...
My teacher used this book (fifth edition) in a basic electronics course (university). The book begins with some semiconductor basics, the pn-junction is explained and this chapter is OK if one just needs the very basic understanding (which in some schools might be enough). The second chapter contains some diodeapplications and power supply filters, the third chapter is about zener diode applications and some special purpose diodes. Then he goes on with the BJT, FET and the opamp. The physics behind the BJT is very superficially covered but he explains the operation of the BJT in principle. The book considers the basic transistor amplifier circuits but a lot of important material is left out. He uses the r-parameter model as the transistor smallsignal equivalent model, which is not a very common smallsignal model. The FET transistor comes as the next chapter, and here I miss the physics behind the FET. Of course one can design circuits without knowing the physics behind these devices, but knowing the physics will give you a much better understanding. It should also be mentioned that this book is limited to low frequency applications. Further, he doesn't say anything at all about feedback in transistoramplifiers which is one of the most important concepts in electronics. One should know that without feedback you are more or less limited to one-transistor amplifier stages, at least for the practical situation.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introductory book
This slim and affordable book gives a gentle introduction to quantum mechanics, then applies these concepts and tools to examine the fundamental electronic properties of atoms and molecules, including their interaction with photons. It concludes with an analysis of the electronic properties of semiconductors and the pn junction, and the nonlinear response of optical materials to intense light.

4-0 out of 5 stars updated undergraduate text
[A review of the 5th edition.]
1-0 out of 5 stars I was not impressed
I was not at all impressed with this book. I have found more information, with more clear illustrations and samples in books that are a fraction of the cost. The author makes several mistakes throughout this book regarding the fabrication of microchips. I did not find the book to be up to date as far as current standards and practices. I highly reccomend that anyone interested in this subject find a more current book. If a person is interested in fabrication techniques from 5 years ago, then this book will fit that need. If a person wants to be knowledgeable about current methods then avoid this book like the plague. I would get my money back if I could.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
If you have or are in the process of getting your EE, don't bother with this book.As the title says, it's a "Practical Guide" for folks that either have an interest in the topic or wish to get a bit deeper into the issues involved in wafer and semiconductor manufacturing due to job requirements etc... it is not a text book.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still a good book
It is too bad this book is out of print, for it gives a good introduction to the quantum theory as applied to condensed matter, despite the many advances that have taken place since the date of publication, such as high-temperature superconductivity, the fractional quantum Hall effect, and nanoscale physics. Therefore, if a copy can be found, it is still worth perusing and having on one's shelf. I only read the first 8 chapters of the book, so my review will be confined to them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Overall Review of Advanced Solid State Theory
A good book in addition to another introductory text.I covers the subject manner in an orderly fashion and reviews the theory in an intricate fashion. However, the mathematical notation is not what one would expectfrom other Solid State texts however the same conventions are used from hisintroductory book on Solid State Physics. An excellent investment forthose interested.
