5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This edition is as useful as the earlier editions. Besides providing insight on almost all the topics of VLSI, the third edition also addresses several issues related to the sub-micron technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich engineering information from practice in VLSI
I have more than 15 integrated circuit design text book, this new edition is one of the best. It bridges academy with industry for VLSI, I like the part about "pitfalls" very much, it provides real lessons what industry has experienced. I like the way this book surveys related topics, for example, sequential circuits topics. It has a brief and good coverage on low power topic(covered in sections in differenct chapters). It also introduces Hspice with useful commands not seen in other text books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Text
The best book on VLSI out there!A must for all designers and professionals. This book gives insight that very few books on VLSI give. Its a treasure and a book to remain in one's collection well after that first, difficult yet exciting, semester in VLSI.A superlative book and read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars still a bible
This book is not for undergrad. But if you want to be a guru, you still find this book very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic work
If there should at all be one point against this book, then it is that it is a priced high (at least in my country). However I found that the text was worth the investment. This book is one of those must-haves for every electronics engineer.4-0 out of 5 stars A classic textbbok for semiconductor physics
As well known, this book is one of the classic books for semicoductor physics. It provides a lot of information in various devices, although some probably is outdated. However, as I know, the author was trying to tell the readers why and how semiconductor devices become what we see today. Because only we know about what the pioneers thinked, we can further modify or invite new semiconductor devices. I must agree that this book is not so easy to follow and read, but, don't froget, this book is devoted for advanced semiconductor physics course. It assumes the reader is already familiar with some foundamental semiconductor knowledge! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappoiting
The book is too theory-oriented; not suitable for engineers. I felt disappointed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
Difficult Side
2-0 out of 5 stars not a good starting point
This is not a good book to start with. The book by Gray and Meyer and Hurst and Lewis is anyday much much better than this book. This book does not care to explain the meaning of small-signal operation and analysis and even such basic important aspects such as biasing and more subtler aspects in later chaters in feedback theory etc etc. It is not at all a good starting point. The excersises are good. Still not at all comparable to analysis and design of analog integrated circuits by gray and meyer... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not A Must Own, But A Good Book
Today, product performance requirements and environmental concerns force designers and productassemblers to become more aware and involved in electronic packaging and interconnect decisions than ever before. Product performance requirements spiral from the effects of increasing operatingspeed, decreasing package size, lowering cost, and reducing time to market. These spiraling requirements decrease the emphasis on traditional componentpackaging, raise new component packaging and handling issues, and placemore responsibility for packaging on the assembler, all the whileincreasing component and product complexity. Environmental concerns drivenew requirements for cleaning, interconnection, and reclaiming andconserving resources; and political responses to issues, previously beyondthe scope of influence on engineers and scientists. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Professional writes a professional book

The book is in great condition and was ok for the price. Ad i couldnt find it in any of my university book stores

4-0 out of 5 stars useful theoretical tools for designing devices
For over thirty years, Green's functions have been used to calculate effects in solid state physics. But usually for pure research, destined to be written up in scientific journals. Here, Datta offers some outreach. There is indeed quite a lot of theory presented. But there is a corresponding emphasis on the latest materials fabrication abilities, including the making of nanotubes and quantum dots.

2-0 out of 5 stars Im a little worried
I just finished reading chapter one.I know it is quite early to make judgements, but already I'm starting to feel uneasy. As someone who has always enjoyed physics and math(and done well) I feel a little more insight into what is trying to be explained would be great.Im a student at the authors institution so I think thats why we have to use this book.I agree with others that there is a lot of waisted commentary so far, but it may prove to be usefull later. It just seems like a lot is thrown into one chapter and doesn't really mix well.More time, or more explanation about what is trying to be explained would greatly benefit the first chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Overall
I'm an undergrad physics/engineering student.I thought this book was reasonably well written and clear. It could benefit from more example problems, and some solution techniques.
3-0 out of 5 stars Wordy, some explanations are not clear, can be better.
I finished chapter 7. The authors do not show each step how to get the equations. Instead, a lot of math steps are missing. Unless you are good at math and recall all the fundamental physics equations, you will spend a lot of time to derive the equations by yourself. Without derive the equations, you can only accept the results without any insight. This book tries to cover introduction materials and more advanced materials.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for LED Device info, Short on Process Technology
It is a great book for pople interested in the LED device. It is disappointing in people interested in the processing to make the device. I hope Prof. Schubert will add that dimension in his next book on this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good level for advanced undergraduate/1st-yr grad student
Schubert (RPI) has written an excellent book on LEDs that manages to explain and derive simple quantitative models for many phenomena of current interest. He tackles issues such as resonant cavity LEDs, reliability/surface recombination issues, current spreading theory, etc. Many monographs are a compendium of results in the field with hundreds of references to papers, which are briefly discussed, and are written by several authors. In contrast, Schubert, while giving copious references, is the sole author, leading to a coherent presentation well suited to learning. There are plentiful and good figures and drawings, as well as many exercises and solutions integrated into the text. There are no back of chapter problems, but this is not really a text for lower level undergraduates.

3-0 out of 5 stars for PHD only
This book is for master , PHD or higher.Lots of graduate school physics, math.Researcher, scientest engineering grad. school student may find it useful for studying light emmiting semiconductor material.I was a electrical engineer myself. 4-0 out of 5 stars Clarification of previous review
As a reader of this book and a user of Impulse C I feel that I should clarify some of the previous reviewer's comments. While "weirdweird" is clearly knowledgeable about FPGAs, he (or she) is confused about the programming and execution model used by Impulse C.
3-0 out of 5 stars Very mixed
Let's start on the positive side. This book is very current - it mentions the recent Cray and SGI FPGA accelerators as part of the reason for programmers to learn about FPGAs. It goes through some interesting and practical examples, showing how a C program can be used to specify the synthesizable logic for triple DES, including time/space tradeoffs. It gives some hardware awareness, without trying to turn a programmer into an EE. Best of all, it shows practical use of Impulse C, an ANSI C extension that supports pragma-driven pipelining and parallelism. Impulse C, by the way, seems to have an exceptional pedigree. It seems to descend from Maya Gokhale's work at Los Alamos, and there isn't much better parentage for such a product to claim.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential text
This is an essential text for engineers, scientists, and graduate students working in the semiconductor field. It contains a thorough review of all major electrical, optical, and physical characterization methods that are commonly used.Descriptions of techniques are generally conceptually oriented, clearly stated, and do not rely excessively on equations. In addition, many useful figures are included to help explain concepts when introduced.Up to date references are included for essentially every technique mentioned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
Schroder has compiled an extensive and very nearly complete guide to modern characterization techniques that apply mostly to semiconductors and solid state devices, but also to techniques used in general materials analysis. We used this text in a graduate level course in EE and found it easy to read through and concise for use as a quick reference.Well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Circuit Designers
Dr. Allen estalished methodological analysis and design principles of CMOS analog circuits, especially in op amps and filters. As the author's publicity tells, this book (and 1st edition) turned a magic of analog circuits and systems to straight forward design flow. As an analog and mixed signal designer, this book is always within my reach on the desk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Analog IC Design Textbook but not Gray and Meyer
Allen & Holberg is a book you should add to your library if you are a mixed signal designer or applications engineer. It is particularly strong in switched capacitor circuits (ch 9) and A/D and D/A conversion circuits (ch 10).It is weak on high speed analog design, and weak in developing the intuition needed for analog design, something Gray and Meyer spends time on.I feel that the text reads much better than Razavi.go to www.aicdesign.org for the book errata.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Text I've Had
While I maybe be biased in saying this is the best text I've had at a certain school (where the author teaches), I feel this book makes a solid effort at covering the material. The book is organized nicely and the end of chapter questions always relate to the chapter material.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product!
I recieved a book in excellent condition at a very good price.I would definately purchase from this company in the future and recommend that you do the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great text, some room for improvement
Pierret is an excellent author and explains fundamental concepts in plain language. After the initial treatment of Miller indices and quantum mechanics, the coverage for pn diodes begins. This is where the book shines. The coverage is extremely thorough, the derivations are done without skipping any important calculations (unless they're unnecessary or too complex for the scope of the book), and the reader is always pointed toward the most important results. This coverage serves an excellent preparation for studying the BJT, which is likewise covered well. Done especially well are the energy band diagrams for pn junctions and BJTs. Pierret understands that knowing the energy band diagrams well means knowing the device well and emphasizes this fact.

1-0 out of 5 stars No circuit analysis at ALL
This book was used for an upper level graduate course at my university.Unfortunately, all of the homeworks used questions from this textbook, and we were not able to complete ANY of them using the analysis (or lack there of) covered in this text.We struggled to find answers in this book, but eventually found the answers using other textbooks or notes we gained from other professors and classes.

1-0 out of 5 stars FEEDBACK
This book is not for begineer like me, I graduated as a Computer Engineer and really have problem learning this book. I suggest to read the Semiconductor Fundamentals same author before buying this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Complicated material written in a very concise manner.
On a quick scan at first the material covered in this book appears intimidating. It covers concepts of quantum physics like Schrdinger equation; Blotch theorem;Kronig-Penney model; Brillouin zones and then covers the semiconductor physics as Fermi levels; carrier transportation. The book covers a lot of fairly complicated material in a very concise and explanatory manner.Just by the sheer difficulty of the material; I would suggest taking a course to help alleviate the pain of self-tutoring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book
Very nice book. I especially liked the manner in which minimal essentials of solid-state physics was covered. In a short time you can get to know quite a bit of basic essentials of solid-state that a semiconductor device engr needs to know.

4-0 out of 5 stars updated undergraduate text
[A review of the 5th edition.]
1-0 out of 5 stars I was not impressed
I was not at all impressed with this book. I have found more information, with more clear illustrations and samples in books that are a fraction of the cost. The author makes several mistakes throughout this book regarding the fabrication of microchips. I did not find the book to be up to date as far as current standards and practices. I highly reccomend that anyone interested in this subject find a more current book. If a person is interested in fabrication techniques from 5 years ago, then this book will fit that need. If a person wants to be knowledgeable about current methods then avoid this book like the plague. I would get my money back if I could.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
If you have or are in the process of getting your EE, don't bother with this book.As the title says, it's a "Practical Guide" for folks that either have an interest in the topic or wish to get a bit deeper into the issues involved in wafer and semiconductor manufacturing due to job requirements etc... it is not a text book.Read more
