5-0 out of 5 stars Superb instructional book for my needs
I bought this book for two reasons (a) I needed an overview of IP and (b) I wanted to examine different pattern analysis algorithms with a practical twist. On both counts, as an non-IP researcher, I was very satisfied. The book is very well laid out, so well in fact that it would put to shame many of its rivals. It served my needs.I can't comment on whether it will meet the needs of a broader community.I would certainly recommend it based on my experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful
This book educates the reader in image processing and MATLAB.While I am experienced in both, I found the book to be an extrememly useful reference book for projects involving image compression and image representation. The book offered practical descriptions and useful code for computing the fast wavelet transform. It was especially useful in describing how the edges should treated. This is a big issue that other textbooks gloss over.I had never seen it described in a textbook, and it was described so well.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best of its kind.
If you want to get up to speed on Matlab and plan to use it for image processing, this book is a must.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Goodman's Fourier Optics 3rd Edition:An Improved Classic.
For the last month, I have been using this book for self study to aid me in my work with lasers.Originally, I was working from the 1st edition (borrowed from a co-worker), but decided to buy my own copy.I wound up buying the 3rd edition, a significantly expanded version of the original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Landscape Lighting 101
The Landscape Lighting book, by Janet Moyer, provides both an academic and practical level of landscaping lighting knowledge. Another good book, if you can find it, is the Ortho's book of How to Design and Install Outdoor Lighting.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Art and Craft of Landscape Lighting
The second edition of Janet Lennox Moyer's THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is an absolute necessity for everybody who works in landscape lighting or who is seriously interested in creating their own garden lighting. Ms Moyer has greatly revised and expanded the color plates and Chapter 4, "The Design Process - Documenting and Installing Landscape Lighting" as well as writing an entirely new Chapter 5 "Follow-up Work - Record Documents and Project Maintenance." These changes and additions and the many other updates make the new edition well worth the purchase price.
5-0 out of 5 stars expert opinion
Still the best book for the professional.Invaluable resource for architects, landscape architects and landscape lighting designers.Broad and deep with plenty of technical information.I purchased this book in1992 and I bought it again today (an electrician friend "lost" myoriginal copy).A second edition (if planned) should include betterinformation about transformer regulation (the ability of a low voltagelighting transformer to maintain 12v under load) and voltage drop (thedreaded decrease in voltage through the main supply cable) which arepresented as formulae rather than actual measurements.Great photographsmostly of large scale projects. This book should be in every outdoorlighting designer's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and instructive.
This book can be considered as the Bible of photonics. It has a complete coverage of almost all photonics subjects. It is suitable for undergraduate students since it starts with the fundamentals of optics and physical concepts as well as graduate students, because it also contains more advanced topics.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great as reference, only OK as a textbook
Photonics is the control, manipulation, transfer and storage of information using photons, the fundamental particles of light, and is also known as optoelectronics. As a reference, this book touches on every phase of photonics and is unsupplanted in its field even 14 years after it is published. It covers optics, lasers, semiconductor photon sources, electro-optics, and even acousto-optics in an accessible style with plenty of diagrams. There are plenty of equations explaining the theory throughout. This would be a great book if it were not for one thing- the total lack of worked examples or exercises. For engineers who like to learn by a combination of reading and doing, this leaves the reader completely unsure of his/her comprehension of the material. I have several suggestions for engineers who want to use this book to aid them in understanding photonics:
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books in this field
I think that this book is one ofthe best books in the field. Amnon Yariv, undoubtedly is one of the leaders in this research field as a Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering, but his books simply suck, they look like they are written after a tea in an evening, having gathered together some articles and then cut-paste in an emergency situation. Saleh and Teich on the other hand starts from the very basics, geometrical optics, and their unique view takes the reader all the way down to fiber optics. This is one of the best books of course. As to its nature as a dictionary more than a textbook, I think this is true in a sense, but this is modern optoelectronics, what do you expect? One has to follow the references too, then it is a complete resource. For those who find this book incomprehensible, I would suggest them to take look at Born & Wolf, that is the definition of "Incomprehensible" in optics. As an undergraduate or an early graduate text book, Saleh & Teich is simply the best. Well, still, I would recommend to take an opportunity to read Yariv`s books too, after all he is one of the best in research, though not in presentation ofthe material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very clear in the quantum treatment
it is surprising to find that textbook like this did a remarkable good job in exploiting the density matrix formalism and also the related theoretical techniques in quantum dissipative systems. If you are interested in the quantum treatment, Chapter 3 and 6 are great!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good buook
It is a very good book:
4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but nonetheless the best available
The field of nonlinear optics is actually much more general in scope than the name implies, and it finds large intersection with quantum mechanics, atomic physics and physical chemistry. It has applications in virtually all physical and life sciences. It's thus surprising that for such a useful and interesting subject, there would be such a shortage of good books! Fortunately, this book is excellent, and covers the subject thoroughly in both theory and application. An interesting feature of the book is that it covers the basic theory first from a classical perspective (i.e. nonlinear dipole polarization) and then rederives the basic results from semiclassical quantum theory. While the dielectric approach alone is adequate for solving problems (in fact, the quantum approach is useless in practice) the quantum background is fascinating to read and greatly helps in developing an intuitive picture of the physical mechanisms behind nonlinear processes. Boyd makes the nice choice of using Gaussian units, which is foreign to anybody but theoretical physics snobs but which eliminates a lot of useless notational complexity. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Valuable Reference Source on Lasers and it's applications.
The Institute of Physics Publishing is to be congratulated on publishing this three-volume set titled: Handbook of Laser Technology and Applications, edited by Colin E. Webb and Julian D C Jones. This vast collection of articles on lasers and it's technological applications is the work of over 170 international experts, many of whom are world leaders in their respective areas of lasers and laser technology.Volume I is of 301 pages but it can serve as a great graduate level text outlining the basic principles oflasers, laser beams and nonlinear optics. The articles are very lucidly written and well illustrated with diagrams and references.I would most certainly use it for an introductory graduate level course in laser physics.Volume II which covers pages 305 to 1555 is a veritable encyclopedia on the operating characteristics and mechanisms of almost all kinds of lasers with it's optical and electronic components.Every chapter is accompanied with an exhaustive bibliography at it's end.Volume III which covers pages 1559 to 2725 covers a wide range of applications of lasers to all aspects of engineering and technology.Again massive bibliographical references accompany each article in this volume. This 3-volume set should be a must buy for any institution dealing with lasers at any level especially those interested on the latest references in laser applications research. The index at the back is exhaustive and well documented.Congratulations to the editors on a superb job. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An unusually clear book -- and great for OCR researchers.
This nifty book is unusual in several respects: it is written in an extremely clear and simple style; it presents good clear code, both in print and on the accompanying CD; and it presents a variety of different methods for achieving each given goal. For example, the book presents a half-dozen different algorithms (usually with code) for edge-detection, for thresholding, and for skeletonization. For the most part, the book does a good job of explaining the relative merits or suitabilities of the different algorithms.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding source of implementations of image processing algorithms
This book is a great source of code for the implementations of common and not so common algorithms used in image processing and computer vision. It is not meant to be a textbook on either subject. For that I suggest you turn to "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods for the subject of image processing and to "Computer Vision" by Linda Shapiro for computer vision.
5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book
It has source C code available, which I found is very helpful. It would be better if its code is written in C++. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Image Analysis Book Review
I found the book to be very informative and I acquired several ideas from reading it. But, I repeatedly found myself searching the book for definitions of some of the terms it uses throughout its text. Practical Algorithms for Image Analysis will introduce new terms without any hint of their meaning, assuming that the reader already knows all they need to know about the subject matter (which would negate the need to buy the book!). This book sorely needs a glossary.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's just great
The book is just great! I used the source code from the CD-ROM for various image processing projects. The algorithms are also very practical if you have to deal with images. The code is neat and ready to compile and run.5-0 out of 5 stars Luis J Gutierrez

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for Absorption and Scattering!
Bohren and Huffman present a coherent and comprehensive description of absorption and scattering by small particles. The text is written in a very amusing style, where ideas are presented in a conversation like manner, as if the authors are directly addressing the reader, providing jokes and examples to illustrate their point. This text builds upon the description provided by Hulst in classic text, and provides a deal of useful information particularly related to absorption (not covered by the text of Hulst)!
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Very good choice of topics.Clear presentation.Caters to a wide variety of audiences.5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written exposition, 1st-rate content.
The authors' lively and `user-friendly' style of presentation help bring material of an advanced nature within the reach of a larger number of readers than most books that deal with the subject at this level. I highly recommend this classic reference. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Erudite and encyclopedic but extremely expensive
I've used Palik & Ghosh as an occasional reference work for years, because it's very good, and has chapters on most of the materials I've needed to work with--metals, silicon, and oxide dielectrics of one sort or another. Obviously a lot of work went into it, and it's a pretty specialized business, measuring and tabulating optical properties.I'd give it 5 stars for content, no doubt about it--an orchid for the editors: for their part of the deal they deserve our praise and thanks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Clear, insightful, and fun to read. If you want to understand lasers, this is your best bet. Siegman also reviews his references, which is great. I actually bought a couple of books as a result of his suggestions. He is an outstanding professor from Stanford. Do I need to say anything else?

4-0 out of 5 stars Lasers
Although now dated this text still is an excellent reference book for laser scientists and optics graduate students. An updated version covering recent advances is needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Lasers Book
This is universally regarded as the ultimate reference for lasers. After discovering it in grad school, I understand why! Siegman's explanations are truly phenomenal and "Lasers" treats virtually every topic on lasers. Plus, he has comprehensive errata on his website! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good treatment of core subject, but difficult for beginner
I am new to phase-lock loop design.Like most recent EE grads, I had one class in linear control systems, and some basic DSP classes, but thankfully that's enough to get started on PLL design.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is my favorite book on phase locked loops in my entire library. It is an excellent book for actually learning phase locked loops from the ground up.Read more
