5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, David griffiths
This book is wonderful news to anyone who is frustrated with Jackson, or alternatively, is an excellent preface to it; Chapter 1 is particularly helpful as it presents all the necessary vector analysis, and is filled with illuminating geometrical interpretations to otherwise obscure mathematical creatures.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book ever
A shining star in the quest for the most incomplete work ever published by credible institutions, David Griffiths triumphs over both the competition and his other works with his widely-distributed Third Edition of Introduction to Electrodynamics.
4-0 out of 5 stars Book good, Amazon not
This book is a great introduction to electrodynamics and contains well worked out examples and good problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't be too scared...
As an undergraduate and graduate student, I recall whispers of fear always surrounding the mention of the classical electrodynamics course. Most people would say the subject matter itself isn't challenging per se--it's the much-dreaded Jackson book.
4-0 out of 5 stars It is tough, but you need it!
This book has been used as a graduate level electricity&magnetism textbook for several decades almost all around the World.
3-0 out of 5 stars Useful Examples
This book is a little hard to follow, but has many good examples.I was able to learn much from this book and would recommend it in conjunction with another E&M book.I chose to buy the second edition because the entire book is in gaussian units. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for both, under-graduate and post-graduate students
I find this book very professional educationally, the book starts in clever, easy, baby steps to trigger the reader's mind and to attract him to the radar technology, this is in the first half of the book. the second half boosts the reader withwell organized advanced radar systems. The book is excellent for communication as well as electomagnetics and antennae students, the book finds the way to balance this issue.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thorough but somewhat dated book
This book is one of the best introduction to Radar can be found in the market. I get the 2002 third edition. It is a good book for those who are new to the subject. However, it maybe somewhat dated and not that sufficient for those who want to do further research in particular radar area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know the basics well before starting this book
I was in the USAF for 9 years and am now studying for a degree as an electronics technician. While in the service, I worked a variety of radar jammers and receivers and this volume has pieced together very well that is going on at the other end of the radar. While I learned how radars worked, I learned more how to exploit weaknesses, not the ins and outs of how exactly they were supposed to work. This book was very helpful in enhancing my knowledge of radar, and is an invaluable reference in my library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner....Not for advanced
This book is truely for beginners who have no clue of signal Integrity. He starts this book with stuff like Ohm's law and how capacitors and inductors work which most people learn in high school.
5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the most readable book you'll find on this
Brook's book is exceptional in the clarity of the writing, esp. in explaining key concepts that most engineers are fuzzy on.This book is great at giving engineers an intuitive feel for basic electromagnetics and how it relates to signal integrity and emi.4-0 out of 5 stars A chasm has been bridged...
As an educator, lecturer and practicing designer I am given many books to read and make comment on. I find very few books that are able to bridge the chasm between the needs of a beginner learning about signal integrity and the needs of a professional desperate to solve design problems. This book is an excellent primer and reference for understanding the interrelationship between the board layout and the signal integrity problem. This book details design solutions to classic signal integrity problems and educates the novice in understanding the reasoning behind the solutions. There is a lot of nonsense being written about signal integrity and few people have the resources to filter out the chaff from hay. This book proves every principle presented with tested board layouts, demonstrated engineering principles, or documented laboratory results. Some people can see the world in formulas and some see the world pictorially. This book is rich in both forms of expressionism and its presentation will not exasperate the PCB designer who sees the world visually, or frustrate the engineer seeking equations for design representation. This book has been added to the required reading list for our PCB layout designers and product development engineering teams. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs an update... but still a must for every RFID professional
Book provides a solid foundation for RFID physics and the fundamental concepts. It gets really boring at times because of its staright forward approach and technical jargon. There is no other book in the market that capture RFID in such a depth; however the book is requires a immediate update to incorporate EPCglobal standards and other recent developments in the RFID industry.

4-0 out of 5 stars RFID(RF Coupling in the Near field)
RFID is a well written book. It covers hardware, regulations,
4-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of concepts
This book has a very good collection of most of the concepts related to RFID and is very useful especially for beginners in RFID. I gave only 4 stars as I was dissappointed not to see any examples for any or almost all the concepts explained. For what it costs, I think it makes sense to add some examples liked to some important concepts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on this topic.
This is the best book I ever found on this topic. Its assumes you a beginner and takes you to the engineering level. William Hayt has an outstanding way of communication with the reader. All you require is concentration and imagination power.1-0 out of 5 stars A Very Poor Textbook.
In taking an Engineering Electromagnetics course, I was very disappointed with the instruction of the course; therefore I turned to this textbook for help.Unfortunately, this book is packed with errors, both in the text, and more commonly the end of chapter problems. For such a theoretical subject, the explanation is lacking, and example problems are few and far between. In addition, there are no answers in the back of the book, and the answers available online or on CD-ROM are not all correct, according to my professor.Sigh.All in all, these factors combined to make this a very difficult course, the worst that I have had in my 3.5 years of engineering education.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is by far the worst text book I have ever used.
As an introductory level textbook, this is terrible. There are barely any examples and the problems are badly worded.Be warned: There is an addendum that goes with the book, because there are a significant number of mistakes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic in the Science of Optics
I read this book in the late sixties, when some of my fellow engineers built and tested an acoustic lens for a developmental company. Born & Wolf were well-acquainted with antenna aperture theory, and were among the first to write that the human eye could resolve 5X better than aperture theory would predict. This they credited to involuntary eye movements called flicks and saccades, which when combined with the brain's ability to do signal processing, was able to produce much better resolution than would have been predicted by the diameter of the retinal rods. In many ways the book gives testimony to God's wonderful gift of vision with color, depth, clarity, and order.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
It is just a rare book on physical optics based on Maxwell equations. Rarely a book states the assumptions, the validity of the equations, the principles and how the equations arrived. Certainly, it is a great book for postgraduates and researchers in physical optics not so for undergraduate students who don't want to go through all the mathematics.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This book is a classic with all problems associated. Half of the reference quoted have been written before the WWII. Very useful if you like to quote original papers. This book cover most topics of the classical optics but hardy cover modern topics.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for Absorption and Scattering!
Bohren and Huffman present a coherent and comprehensive description of absorption and scattering by small particles. The text is written in a very amusing style, where ideas are presented in a conversation like manner, as if the authors are directly addressing the reader, providing jokes and examples to illustrate their point. This text builds upon the description provided by Hulst in classic text, and provides a deal of useful information particularly related to absorption (not covered by the text of Hulst)!
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Very good choice of topics.Clear presentation.Caters to a wide variety of audiences.5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written exposition, 1st-rate content.
The authors' lively and `user-friendly' style of presentation help bring material of an advanced nature within the reach of a larger number of readers than most books that deal with the subject at this level. I highly recommend this classic reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an invaluable reference!
What can I say? There are 9 copies of this book in the library of my university and 8 of them have been checked out. The only one left is a reserved copy. And right now it's in the middle of a summer vacation! So many things that I want to know can be found in this book: the difference between Kerr effect and Faraday effect, the magneto-electric tensor, magnetic symmetries of crystals... etc. The explanations are usually very compact but extremely clear. Once many years ago I was frustrated at being unable to find a "physicist's description" of the galvanic cell. Finally, after searching many books and papers, I found a most satisfying explanation, exactly the way I needed it, in this book. It is an invaluable "reference" (but not textbook) for researchers working on material science, light-matter interactions, and related fields.

2-0 out of 5 stars Russian School of Physics
This book has few uses. The book is so abbreviated that you need two other books to understand it.The one useful feature of this book is the problems with solutions, but even those take a lot of deciphering.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST
It the best. I mean the whole course. If you can read Russian buy the original book - they are very very cheap (hardbound): a couple of dollars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book for FDTD
This book is an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable reference/tutorial. The book is suitable for use in an advanced undergraduate/first-year graduate class with a prerequisite of one semester of undergraduate E&M. (The authors' preface indicates that this prerequisite is not entirely necessary, but I don't see how you could understand what is going on without it.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Agree with Prior Reviewer
I cannot quite honestly give this book (*first* edition, not second) a full five-point-zero stars because it somewhat comes apart the closer one gets to the final chapters.I read this book a few years ago, so I apologize for lack of specificity. However, Icompletely agree with the prior reviewer who stated that this book is better than Kunz's and Luebbers' book, which I appears to be a slightly edited compilation of previous publications --- even if that is completely untrue. In fact, in my opinion, Taflove's book (again, first edition) is a *much* better textbook than Kunz and Luebbers.5-0 out of 5 stars A good overview of FD-TD method
A good intro book for the FD-TD method with many applications. The list of references at the end of each chapter is also very useful. Some of the material is now outdated and needs corrections, but otherwise a greatreference for CEM. I would recommend this book over the Kunz & LuebbersFD-TD book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful EMC book
This book makes learning EMC as easy as counting one to three. Very logical, easy to understand, and makes you to think how EMC can be fun and challenging. A very good reference book, easpcially if you love to see things simplified mathimatically.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I consider that this book is avery good start point to introduce oneself into the EMC topic. Clear and pedagogic with a lot of numerical examples and well chosen exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Read it all.
Starting first with the negatives, of which they are four.First, do not be fooled by the title word "introduction."This is NOT a book for beginners, but rather senior engineers. If you are new to EMC this is not the book for you.Second, information relative to FCC/CE requirements is dated. Also, some tests relative to CE compliance are not covered.Third, though there are many diagrams, there are almost no pictures. In many cases I found a picture, as opposed to a diagram would have been far more explanatory.Lastly (though it does not bother me in the least, but I thought you would like to know), the book has numerous typos through out its 752 pages.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey of RFID; present and future issues.
This is a compilation of papers from numerous organisations with diverse opinions on how this technology will develop.RFID presents opportunities for great improvement in business efficiencies for corporations and better service for customers and consumers. The flip side is that RFID has the potential to negatively impact individual privacy more than most technologies.
4-0 out of 5 stars speculative deployments
The chapters are written by different authors, concerning various aspects about RFID. The topics give an idea of the scope of RFID deployment. None of the chapters would be considered technical. You are not required to be an electrical engineer to follow any chapter.
3-0 out of 5 stars Fast track RFID project helper
For those who want faster diving in RFID technology I would recommend to take a look at DataBrokers TagTracker. Their new version works with LF and HF transponders and uses Hibernate to store scanned data in a database. It comes with PIRF-Lite (Java written API) which allows the user to make new transponder layouts and interact with the RFID reader differently than it is shown in TagTracker. TagTracker itself is enough to collect RFID data from different locations (RFID readers) and store it in a common database. Like a data pump. All you need is to create your own interface to query the database using your preferred languages/tools , etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Jackson seem like Casey Stengel
I'm a physics grad student who has been struggling with J.D. Jackson's book for a semester now. In my endless search for anything and everything to help explain Jackson's 'explanations,' I came across this fantastic book at the library. Very new, published February 2005, and quite up to date. His explanations are exceedingly clear, derivations easy to follow (though not watered down any), and mathematics precise. He covers all the standard topics- Green's functions, Legendre and Bessel equations, gauge transformations, waveguides, ... all the stuff at the heart of any grad-level E&M course. He even does so at the level of Jackson. But somehow he manages to avoid the 13 pages of math for each concept that Jackson introduces.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Electromagnetics book
Pros: Relate EM into real life examples, which makes the book interesting to read. Simple but powerful examples and equations which made my life a lot easier.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book
I'm currently in an electromagnetics course that uses this book and this book is awful. The author cannot explain the concepts in a clear manner. The author skips parts of the explaination leaving me confused as to what he did. Also the examples in the book are not very good, an answer is given with little or no work. The book needs more examples and needs to explain the concepts much better. If you're in a course that uses this book get another book, such as Schaum's Outline of Electromagnetics. From a student point of view, this is a horrible book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Non-traditional ordering of chapters
I just completed a junior-level course which made use of this text.Although the topics are arranged differently than in similar textbooks, I found the explainations of EM concepts quite good. The main strength isgetting right to Maxwell's equations in chapter two(--after all, that'swhat EM is all about, right?).Maxwell's equations are explained well andat an introductory level so that the reader is not overwhelmed. The mainweakness is the very underdeveloped first chapter, "ComplexVectors" which is too brief and oversimplified for the subject matterat hand. The book also presents very informative and even entertainingasides on applications, such as "anti-glare headlights"(polarization), "tails of comets" (radiation pressure) and"microwave ovens" (penetration depth). Overall, a very goodfirst EM book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for learning, less useful as a reference.
Balanis's text is useful for someone first learning graduate level electromagnetics because it walks things through in great detail. However, the text is so detailed that it fails to cover more advanced topics and doesn't have the breadth of other EM texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Great Textbook
I have many E&M texts primarily because there are so many nuances to learn and I find it important to have different points of view. However, the Balanis text does something the others doesnt. It covers a great deal of ground and puts the multitude of equations into a 'BOX' for easy reference. And all these equations are derived in a very straight forward fashion so a person can remember them and understand their basis. Most texts have the equations all over the place and when trying to solve problems you wonder where to look next. Not so with Balanis. In fact, I have definitely been able to solve E&M problems now after reading his book then I could do before it. If E&M is your field this text is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good theoretical treatment of electromagnetic theory
In this book Balanis goes into great detail covering the solutions of the wave equation for several important boundary-valued EM problems in different coordinate systems. One of the other reviewers complains of the wordiness in this book and how Balanis' solves both the TE and TM problems in every case. I do not see the faults here as these are fundamental concepts that all graduate level electromagnetics students need to become familiar with. Wordiness, especially to someone unfamiliar with many of the more complex topics in electromagnetics, is only beneficial.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great source of review problems
You couple this book with Griffith's text on electromagnetism and you can't go wrong.Using Griffith's great explanations and the ample supply of worked out problems in this Schaum's outline, you will be able to teach yourself all important subject matter.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too Brief!
It appears that the author assumes readers will already have a good understanding of calculus, vectors, and a somewhat advanced knowledge of electrostatics and electromagnetism! Readers without this background will likely struggle with the material!
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and practical Electronic Book
Electromagnetism is a hard subject for many people, including myself.Schaums Outline of Electromagnetics, by Edminister, is an outstanding collection of problems and solutions more even when a companion in Electromagnetics using Mathcad, the leading technical calculation software. The big advantage of the interactive Outline is its use of LiveMath. You can change the starting parameters of a problem and watch as graphs are calculated in front your eyes.
