5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a radar expert, but with this book I COULD BE!!!
Mr. Stimson's book, "Introduction to Airborne Radar (2nd Edition)," has been one of my most treasured purchases from my graduate school education. I expected a book filled with equations and bad graphs and tables - I was wonderfully surprised by the high quality graphics, easy to follow mathematical treatment, and historical views into past and present radar systems.
5-0 out of 5 stars No other introduction needed
Stimson's second edition is a slight improvement over his first. "Slight" because improving near perfection remains a difficult task. Nowhere else is such clarity apparent in the complex field of radars. Thanks to Stimson this subject could be understood by my grandmother. If only Stimson would carry edition three to the next echelon, extending depth and detail to levels required to actually build and make a working, modern radar. Like applying his talent to the intricacies of adaptive processing, a completion of SAR computational demands and processes (vs. stopping at the digital filter FFT), nuances of ever more important phase noise, test, measurement and producibility of radar systems that shouldn't cost a million dollars per copy, but a fraction of this with proper processes and synergistic integration vs. the "Mister Potato Head" approach of slapping together the latest-greatest-of-every-subsystem-technology still practiced by engineers in just about everything. Unfortunately this may be our last version from Stimson as he's no longer a young man and such efforts are monumental. Even so, he's made himself a national asset creating this magnificent edition, probably lasting longer than any of us in the field today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not easy reading
I bought this book because I work with radar and would like to improve my understanding of it. This book is a good middle ground, but for a dummy like me, several chapters require re-reads.One of the most annoying things is that when the author describes related material, he doesn't compare and contrast as much as write one paragraph on the attributes of thing A and then another paragraph on thing B using all but two words that were used in the first paragraph. The reader must wade through this writing and then compare and contrast themself.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Radar Reference Book
The day after I bought this book, I made a mistake telling a colleague about it, after which it was very difficult to track it down who has it and who is using it in a team of several Radar Engineers. They had all used it as a definitive reference book on any aspect of Radar design - it covers everything that you need to know and want to know right NOW about a Radar clearly and accurately.5-0 out of 5 stars On Target For Radar Handbook

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent excellent book
I have enjoyed this book enormously throughout. While there are a fairly large number of radar books available, this is the first that I have read that lays out the signal processing aspects of radar in such a coherent, pedagogically sound, and self-contained way, generally from first principles. For example, the exposition of slow and fast time processing throughout the book was very illuminating, as was the connection drawn between the Neyman-Pearson receiver and the matched filter. The only other text I have seen that combines such clarity of vision, readability, and rigor is the book by Peebles, which unfortunately has little material on digital radar signal processing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superior treatment
This is a superior book! There is nothing comparable in either the general radar or the signal processing literature. It provides an exceptionally clear treatment of difficult subject matter. The author patiently guides the reader through radar basics and then into the depths of the associated data processing concepts. The treatment is so lucid that even a neophyte can expect to develop a deep understanding of the concepts involved and be able to apply them immediately (i.e.,When the boss comes in and says, "You're my radar expert. Tell me how you're going to process the all the data!", this book is the antidote to the ensuing panic attack.). The clarity of the brief radar dicussions throughout the text (e.g., the SAR chapter)will provide glimmers of additional insight on radar even to those with indepth knowledge of the area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on estimation/Kalman filter
I don't usually write online reviews but this book is so clear and useful that I really want to recommend it to others. It is well written with a good outline and summary for every chapter. It also has a pretty diverse range of topics on estimation, including an introductory chapter on basic estimation approaches (e.g., ML, MAP, least squares), and very practical extensions (e.g., state augmentation, square-root filters). Even though I am not in EE and some of the examples are thus not particularly helpful to me, I still find this book one of the best of all the estimation/Kalman filter books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars best standard book for target tracking system
I think any person who major in target tracking system related to the Kalman filter must see this book. This book present the fundamentals of state estimation theory and the tools for the design of state-of-the-art algorithms for target tracking. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for both, under-graduate and post-graduate students
I find this book very professional educationally, the book starts in clever, easy, baby steps to trigger the reader's mind and to attract him to the radar technology, this is in the first half of the book. the second half boosts the reader withwell organized advanced radar systems. The book is excellent for communication as well as electomagnetics and antennae students, the book finds the way to balance this issue.

4-0 out of 5 stars A thorough but somewhat dated book
This book is one of the best introduction to Radar can be found in the market. I get the 2002 third edition. It is a good book for those who are new to the subject. However, it maybe somewhat dated and not that sufficient for those who want to do further research in particular radar area.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know the basics well before starting this book
I was in the USAF for 9 years and am now studying for a degree as an electronics technician. While in the service, I worked a variety of radar jammers and receivers and this volume has pieced together very well that is going on at the other end of the radar. While I learned how radars worked, I learned more how to exploit weaknesses, not the ins and outs of how exactly they were supposed to work. This book was very helpful in enhancing my knowledge of radar, and is an invaluable reference in my library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive text
To me, this book's greatest strength is instant applicability of theories and recipes presented in it. Virtually all topics in SAR are covered with great quality. There is no hard tie to any particular type of radar signals, which makes it very versatile.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best texts on SAR signal processing
SAR imaging owes a lot to inverse scattering theory, coherence theory, Fourier optics and holography. Luckily, Soumekh comes from an optics background and therefore, is very comfortable with all the optics stuff. He has done an excellent job in presenting different modalities of SAR imaging like stripmap and spotlight and implementing the algorithms in matlab. There is a lot of depth in his book and every time I read it I understand something that I could not understand when I read it last time. I have become a fan of Soumekh. I also attended one of his tutorials based on this book in the SPIE symposium in Orlando Florida.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice applications with heavy computations
Wasn't there once a time, in the depths of the Cold War, when Synthetic Aperture Radar was highly classified? It is still jarring to me to see a book like this, telling all and sundry about the many applications to which it can be directed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Faulty approximations and poor "folksy" presentation
The book was a major disappointment given the previous "5 star" rating and high price.I quit reading the book after 56 pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment of auto-focus techniques from the leader
This book describes the PGA algorithm which is used extensively in all modern SAR systems. A clear and broad treatment of SAR processing. This should be the first SAR book you reach for. It's nice to read about algorithms from the originators for a change. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars 2nd edition is OK
2nd edition is a Reorganization of the 1st edition. Author mentions Apeendix F which is missing, and etc. Needs editorial work for the price.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Mix of Presentation and Hands On
I have worked through the first couple of chapters so far and I think this book is great. This book offers good technical derivations and explanations (never thought I would want to see a derivation again after gettting my BSc EE).It also has problems to work through and a good library of m files to work with from the website. My only complaint is that the answers to the end of the chapter questions are not provided (although there are very good examples of other problems in the chapter).

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful Radar Resource
If there is a marathon radar book, this one wins the race. This book is a top-notch radar analysis resource.I reference this text on a weekly (sometimes daily) basis. The MATLAB code this book provides is concise and very useful.I recommend this book to anyone interested in radar at any level. The examples are easy to understand and the review problems further reinforce the text material. From beginning to end, this book covers subjects from the Radar Equation to Clutter to Tracking.Mahafza hits a home run with this one.I only hope there is a follow-up text out soon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding radar textbook on the academic level
This is an excellent radar textbook for advanced students on the academic level. The distiction is necessary, because older textbooks by Barton, Skolnik and Nathansson were mostly designed for radar engineers. Modernstudents have a better mathematical background than previous generationsand this is used to advantage in Levanon's text. The author uses everyopportunity to present his results in a general and easy-to-read form. Theexamples are excellent and often based on the author's own researchexperience. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Small but excellent
The book appears small possibly insignificent; however, it contains a wealth of data invaluable to both military consultant, technical manager or boffin. As a resource it is nigh on perfect. It complements the Introduction to Radar book by Skolnik by offering the complex arguments within radar in an understandable format, allowing the reader to dive deeper into the subject area using Skolnik's tome.5-0 out of 5 stars pound for pound one of the best
This book has the fewest errors and least misleading information on radar and propagation pound-for-pound of any books on electromagnetism I have seen.It outclasses Skolnik et al.It will not be found suitable for academic instruction because it is way too concise and is not threaded with obtuse mathematical premise as is wont of high level education, eventhough it has questions and answers with each chapter. This is your little book of big radar and electromagnetics.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction for non-experts
Quite simply, the book is true to its title. This book is intended for scientists, engineers, mathematicians, managers, and other college-educated persons who need to interact intelligently with radar experts.J.C.Toomay's book won't make you an expert, but the consise, focused chapterswill quickly acquaint you with the radar concepts you need to contribute indevelopment or analysis of systems that include elements of radartechnology. One note of caution is that this book does treat a verytechnical subject, and although Toomay doesn't spend pages deriving radarequations, the reader will need a good understanding of integral calculusand fourier analysis to get the most out of his book.A solid backgroundin engineering or physical science is a thorough prerequisite for gettingthe most out of this book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete, careful, well written.
After having used a half dozen books on the topic of synthetic aperture radar signal processing, this is the best. The authors are very careful with their explanations and derivations, and keep their discussions within the subject context. Other books don't do this, and the details of SAR processing can become confusing to the novice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in SAR, despite the very high price tag.
