3-0 out of 5 stars A thick book which could be much thinner
Working in optics, I purchased this book to get a wider scope of scanning techniques and possible optical schemes. The book is thick, up to eight hundred pages, and expensive. So, I expected a variety of optical schemes for laser/optical scanning. But I was disappointed with a great amount of topics, filling this book, which do not relate to scanning. For example, the chapters about M2 model, optical disk technology, image quality for scanning, are interesting in general but have rather distant relation to scanning. The chapter about motors and controllers is interesting, presenting the state-of-art of this technology, but it is overfilled with large, up to a page size, pictures which do not contain any information. For example, several pictures of printed-circuit boards with a great number of indistinguishable electronic components could be easily removed without any harm to the book. Also I doubt that pictures of standard diamond turning center, thin film deposition chamber, and other conventional industry technology are of any interest for professionals. At the same time such topics as infrared imaging scanners, reconnaissance systems, MEMS scanning/switching devices are completely ignored, as well as the rotating wedges technology. Summarizing, the size of this book could be made much smaller and the price lower without any loss of information. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Marketing hype for RFID, nothing more
This book was a HUGE dissapointment for me. I have plenty of "For Dummies" series books and this is the only one that really let me down.
5-0 out of 5 stars RFID for Dummies
Excellent book for first timers in gaining knowledge about RFID technology and it's many uses within the supply chain. Easy reading with excellent examples of the what the RFID technology can or can not do for a buisness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Very good book for beginners, not only from a technical point of view, but also for somebody who is looking for knowing how to adress an RFID project and how to make a Business Case. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What the heck does Iron Maiden have to do with this book?
A wonderfully funny thing happened to me the other day, and never one to believe in coincidence, I thought I would share it.I just finished reading this wonderful book, "Spychips" by Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre, the day before. In the last chapter, they coalesce some of the spiritual/religious/ethical issues surrounding RFID.As expected, they mention the passage in the Book of Revelations (ch. 13, v. 16-18) about the Mark of the Beast. That very next day, a knock on my screen door presented me with two Christian "students" hoping to get "scholarships" by selling religious books and magazines - quite a few of the lovely tomes, of course, delved into the Revelations and the so-called End Times. The kids were very nice about it all, and I politely declined their request. It wasn't until I walked away and started to do other things in the kitchen that I realized I had answered the door in one of my many Iron Maiden concert shirts, with Eddie (their mutant beast mascot) staring right back at them.(For those of you unfamiliar with the greatest band in the world, they have an album (and song) by the name "The Number of the Beast").
5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping and Frightening, This Book will Change Your Outlook!
Although I'm reasonably well informed when it comes to privacy issues, I'll have to admit that this book shocked me out of my complacency.I've always been a little leery about things like Speedpass and other RFID instant pay systems, but when I read the quotations in this book from patent applications, public forums and company press releases it became obvious that while RFID technology could have some benefits, the potential for abuse is simply too great.
3-0 out of 5 stars An Example of Where Technology is Going
I bought this book from Amazon based on reviews.I had heard of it through a mailing I received. It is obvious the authors both spent a lot of time and research and have untold passion to get this material into the hands of the public. The book is a current and informative tour through the marketplace detailing efforts of RFID (radio transmitters placed secretly in merchandise you buy among other places to spy on you, some transmitters half the size of a grain of sand). I have already seen similar evidence of their findings in the local supermarket (and I live in a small town). It is essentially a 200 plus page warning (with examples) to consumers with documentation sprinkled along the way.It does improve as it goes along, saving the most sensational for the last third of the book. My second reading of the book was more convincing that it is a necessary read for anyone interested in where technology is going.I would recommend it as an introduction to the subject, and it does include the website of the writers to keep up to date. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars quite good buth not well organized
To many stuff in one,its realy messy if youre not well known with practical electronics so i dont recomed it for beginers, its nice for reading and i found 30 % useful information for my project.

3-0 out of 5 stars good for sensor experts, not for beginners..
The content is far away from theoretical details and very practical (quite normal since the author is a company guy). The language is simple and easy to follow. However, the organization is ?awful?.

4-0 out of 5 stars introduction to the basics, at least in theory
This book is an excellent excellent introction to the basic physics and math of x-ray crystallography. This was used as the text in an undergrad class I took on protein crystallography and it was perfect for that purpose. The main drawback of this book is that it is really concentrated on small molecule structure determination, and doesn't address the problems or specific techniques used for large protein structures. So probably the best way to use this book would be in conjuction with a more protein-specific book. But for the raw fundamentals of symmetry and diffraction, I don't think you can beat stout & jensen. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Very Good Book
I can't recommend this book. It seemed sloppily written and edited, with numerous errors. The fact that the author largely limits himself to Euclidean spaces may or may not, depending on your needs, be a big drawback, but the carelessness of the writing really detracts from its usefulness.

2-0 out of 5 stars I don't like this book
We used this book for the first undergraduate topology course at my university.Perhaps the book is okay if you know what to expect from it before you buy it.What this book IS NOT is a book on General Topology. What this book IS is a book on the topology of the real number system. It's odd, because the course I took is one on general topology, where the topology of the real number system was mentioned as a mere footnote, yet this book covers very little general topology. At the end of each chapter, there is a starred section, in which about 1 page is devoted to how these concepts apply to general topology. So if that's what you want, perhaps you'll like this book. But that's not the only reason I didn't like it.Read more

Hold your arm out in front of you and flex it. Watch the muscles beneath your skin go to work, maybe place your hand in front of your eyes as close as you can get and view the interlaced layers of dead skin cells that keep your guts from spilling out, but can you really see what's going on?

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much basic
This book is too much basic and elementary. The language is poor and little pleasant to read. The scanner mods are very explicit, but you can find similar on the net, with same results. The graphics are very poor, with bad resolution (sounds like a dratf). The topic about antennas is a little more interesting, but it provides little help with decimal system, because all formulas use inches and no convesion tips are provided. It's really a VEEEERY introdutory scanner book. You can find better information on the Internet. I didn't like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars For beginner or pro
Mr. Pickard has obviously spent a lot of time and research to pick up the best Scanner and antenna mods available. Now, You might say "Why Buy the book, I can find these mods on line free". I have a junk pile ofburned up radios and scanners I'll sell you if you believe that to be thecase. I have literally burned up scores of radios following "Online" advice. The Most recent was almost an expensive 10 meter Radio, something kept saying to me "This isn't right" so I stopped anddrew out the circuit myself.. Bingo.. I had almost torched this baby.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Review by Scanning and OCR Teacher
So far this is the only book I know of available on OCR and I have been researching over four years for two scanning classes I teach at a local community college. This probably is because not many people who ownscanners actually have need of Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Thosewho do, such as office workers and librarians, will learn a great dealabout preparing documents before attempting to scan/ocr. The authorobviously has been involved in OCR since early days and provides manualsolutions rather than explaining features in newer and more helpful OCRsoftware. Creating forms in OCR is not covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!
Ross writes directly and engagingly, providing a multitude of scenarios and examples to drive home his points. There's even a section that provides guidelines for software and scanner selection. A comprehensive, informativebook and great reference guide. ... Read more
