5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent! Fully Justifies Its Price!
The preface of this book starts with a quote:
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Image Processing
This book feeds the readers all the basic concepts of Image Processing. Very easily understandable and lucid in explanations. I would rate it one among the best EE books published so far.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK book for 1st or 2nd year undergrads
I am giving this book 4 stars because it's quite descriptive and easy to follow. It covers some of the basic concepts behind digital image analysis and touches on the more general signal processing concepts, but it doesn't go very deep into the actual math. This may be what you want, but for me it was an assigned text for a 4th year undergrad course I took in college, and I found it inadequate.I felt like I could have written this book before I even started the class. At the same time, though, I think it would have been a great text for a more entry-level course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive text
To me, this book's greatest strength is instant applicability of theories and recipes presented in it. Virtually all topics in SAR are covered with great quality. There is no hard tie to any particular type of radar signals, which makes it very versatile.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best texts on SAR signal processing
SAR imaging owes a lot to inverse scattering theory, coherence theory, Fourier optics and holography. Luckily, Soumekh comes from an optics background and therefore, is very comfortable with all the optics stuff. He has done an excellent job in presenting different modalities of SAR imaging like stripmap and spotlight and implementing the algorithms in matlab. There is a lot of depth in his book and every time I read it I understand something that I could not understand when I read it last time. I have become a fan of Soumekh. I also attended one of his tutorials based on this book in the SPIE symposium in Orlando Florida.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice applications with heavy computations
Wasn't there once a time, in the depths of the Cold War, when Synthetic Aperture Radar was highly classified? It is still jarring to me to see a book like this, telling all and sundry about the many applications to which it can be directed.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unusually clear book -- and great for OCR researchers.
This nifty book is unusual in several respects: it is written in an extremely clear and simple style; it presents good clear code, both in print and on the accompanying CD; and it presents a variety of different methods for achieving each given goal. For example, the book presents a half-dozen different algorithms (usually with code) for edge-detection, for thresholding, and for skeletonization. For the most part, the book does a good job of explaining the relative merits or suitabilities of the different algorithms.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding source of implementations of image processing algorithms
This book is a great source of code for the implementations of common and not so common algorithms used in image processing and computer vision. It is not meant to be a textbook on either subject. For that I suggest you turn to "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods for the subject of image processing and to "Computer Vision" by Linda Shapiro for computer vision.
5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book
It has source C code available, which I found is very helpful. It would be better if its code is written in C++. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Image Analysis Book Review
I found the book to be very informative and I acquired several ideas from reading it. But, I repeatedly found myself searching the book for definitions of some of the terms it uses throughout its text. Practical Algorithms for Image Analysis will introduce new terms without any hint of their meaning, assuming that the reader already knows all they need to know about the subject matter (which would negate the need to buy the book!). This book sorely needs a glossary.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's just great
The book is just great! I used the source code from the CD-ROM for various image processing projects. The algorithms are also very practical if you have to deal with images. The code is neat and ready to compile and run.5-0 out of 5 stars Luis J Gutierrez

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook
This is an excellent textbook. Easy to follow if you are comfortable with Electromagnetics already.Lot's of math and examples inside.Make sure u get this book first, if you study MRI.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definitive text for the signal processing of MRI
Magnetic resonance has recently recieved many riches in the form of excellent, definitive texts that have bundled together the advances of the last 20 or so years.Drs. Liang and Lauterbur have added to this trove by writing a text that goes beyond the standard descriptions of magnetic resonance image formation and including many advanced techniques available today, some of which they originated. The ideal audience for this text includesscientists, engineers, and physicians actively developing MRI applications from the physics on up. Though containing many recent developments it contains a core of medical imaging information that will not be outdated. The mathematical depth is sufficient to serve as a reference of basic and sophisticated methods but with enough pedagogical information to tutor the interested student. Liang and Lauterbur should be on the shelf of any serious professional or insightful student.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of MR physics, however complicated maths.
The selection of the chapters and the overall coverage of this book are excellent. It provides an outstanding and detailed description of MR physics and of how MR signals are generated and processed. However, notbeing an engineer or a physicist but a MD interested in MRI, I had someproblems with the mathematical background required to understand theformulas used in this book. I feel that the book would be greatly improvedif a more detailed explanation to the mathematics were given. At thispoint, I would recommend this book to graduate students or Ph.D.'s inphysics, in biomedical or in electrical engineering, who want to understandin detail the principles of MR signal generation and processing. Because ofthe somewhat complicated mathematics, the book might be somewhat lessdestined, but still of interest, to radiologists and MRI physicians who, like me, want to enhance their understanding of MR physics and signalprocessing. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars high on description, low on rigour and organisation
This is not a book you can use to rigourouslylearn the fundamentals of image processing. It's a good reference book for the techniques, giving formulas and some hand waving to accompany them - little is motivated, ir doesn't flow, is more a compendium of techniques used in the field accompanied by some text just to make the formulas less dry : the format formula/paragraph is repeated throughout; everything is treated at the same level hence the disjointed structure that doesn't flow.Low on rigourous analysis; may be good as a collection of magazine articles but fails as a textbook on fundamentals - reading this book you'll know the how but it won't help you grasp the why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Consice, yet descriptive
A good book for a variety of people, novice or advanced. Mathematically very well organized. References and bibliography well structured, for each section, giving freedom to explore the ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good reference for advance image processing
This is an excellent and comprehensive book about image processing. Its name is misleading - this is not an introductory book, although it covers all the needed mathematical background. However, this is one of the most valuable books in this field to be handy on your book shelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extra-ordinary book on Computer Vision!
I didn't know or hear about this book till one fine morning when I went to our IIT library looking for some good book on computer vision to supplement the knowledge imparted by Horn's book. I found this book and it contained most of the concepts covered thus far in my lectures. Still I was not convinced about the credibility of this book. Somehow, I started grazing through this book in leisure hours.
4-0 out of 5 stars Some nice intuitions
In my humble opinion, mathematics is best explained through intuitions which motivate the rigor. That is, a general, high level, overall understanding of a particular problem and the "theory" behind a solution must be presented before a rigorious algebraic analysis. The particular mathematics should then read like a novel. In this sense, Trucco and Verri succeed, at various parts throughout the text, but certainly fail at others.I would say 4/5th's of the text is well written, and hence the 4 star review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intermediate textbook on Computer Vision
If you already understand image processing and the basics of computer vision, this book is a very good at concisely presenting more advanced algorithms to the reader. Also, because this book is so well organized, you can read it from beginning to end. Rest assured if you are looking at an algorithm on page 84, you will not need to skip ahead to later sections in the book to understand it. From the beginning, algorithms are named and presented in numbered steps for clarity of presentation. The book starts out with introductory material such as basic optics and the geometry of camera models. It continues with image denoising, as well as two full chapters devoted to image features and their detection. Finally, the more basic material concludes with a chapter on the mathematics of camera calibration. One aspect of vision that is often neglected in other computer vision books that is treated well here is that of motion. For those working in video processing, this might make this book a good selection. Also, the book gives one of the best discussions of eigenspaces that I have seen in print in chapter ten of the book, where the subject is recognition of 3D objects. I was able to code up the eigenfaces face recognition algorithm based almost entirely on the information found in chapter ten of this book. If you need an introduction to computer vision before tackling the more advanced material in this text, try Shapiro's book "Computer Vision" ISBN 0130307963. A good knowledge of linear algebra is necessary prior to understanding the algorithms in this book such as is found in Schaum's outline of Matrix Operations. Given the specific subject matter of this book, it would probably be an excellent choice for an engineer or scientist that is interested in computer vision as it relates to robotics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a bible book to learn Gibbs sampler and simulated annealing
This is absolute a bible book for any person who want to learn Gibbs sampler and simulated annealing seriously. The format of this book, though full of mathematical equations, is very self-evident and concise. Nothingis missing and nothing is redundent. It is an enjoyable journey to followthe logic and principle in this book, with all your attention in. There arefull of in-depth discussion in all aspect of the Gibbs sampler, simulatedannealing, from the visiting scheme to cooling schedule, and parallelalgorithms. The references are excellent too. The author seems to have readall publications till 1995 about this topic and give an excellent detailedand in-depth survey in his book.At the end of your reading, you wouldhave love the mathematical form the author used. Without these tools, manydiscussions in this book will be just impossible and groundless. Ipersonally have read this book for several times. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect
As others have stated, this book comes as close as you'll ever get to a single-source reference on image processing. But if I were ever going to shoot anything down in it, I'd say that a little more mathematical background on some topics (and maybe pseudocoded examples) would help. For example, in the satellite geometric correction section, only a very high level view is given yet this is a challenging topic that could use more depth.Geometric transformations in general could use more depth, e.g. camera calibrations or image warping/morphing/mapping to other projections for example.Another example would be the need for a little more depth on how to make slow algorithms fast ...like convolution multiplications for example.Sure, you could write out the multiplies and spot commonalities, then re-use results that appear in more than one subsequent equation and what not, but some exploration of matrix math and how to make it efficient would be nice. But again ...I'm picking at small things here, and if John's book covered everything that I'd like it to, then it would become 2 books, not one ...hey!Now THERE's an idea!A 2+ book set by John Russ that covers a broader range of topics and does so in greater depth! That's something that I'd pay for (and much better to read than Ballard & Brown)

This is a response to Mr. Kessler's review.First, he needs to state that he has a biased interest in his review, that he used to work with Walter at Hill & Associates before he went to work for Juniper.Second, I was the reviewer for the first edition of the book and Walter had a lot of misconceptions about SONET in the original draft. So much so that my name is menitioned in the acknoweldgements in the first edition.Since I worked as amanager dealing with SONET at both AT&T as well as Cisco Systems, the book leaves a lot to be desired. He is very verbose in his writing style and has never worked in the field to give the reader a real understanding of the issues that come with understanding SONET - both services and equipment. There are other books in the field that do a better job - Andy Reid is a good one from the technical side for example - but this author needs to change his writing style and tone it down for this book to be considered for readership seriously.

2-0 out of 5 stars this is not your book if you want hardcore technical details
I can recommend this book to everyone who wants to get an overview on SDH/SONET capabilities and/or products but does not care for the protocol itself.3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book To Start Sonet Studies
This is very good book for beginners, and for those who wants to understand Sonet basics, but still it very general and lacks from some shallowness.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for anyone working with the details of JPEG
Created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, the JPEG standard defines a toolkit of processes for lossy and lossless encoding and decoding of continuous-tone still images. This guide, which includes the the complete text of the ISO JPEG standards DIS 10918-1 and draft DIS 10918-2, offers detailed information on the JPEG modes of operation, signaling conventions, and structure of compressed data. It also provides a general review of image-coding techniques, so it does not assume the reader has expert status in data compression and coding techniques.
5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive JPEG book for programmers
This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in understanding the JPEG standard. It has two distinct parts.5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars essential MR lab companion
This book is essential to the library of any MR lab that has an interest in in vivo MR spectroscopy, especially on the basic science level. The beginner will find a good survey of the scope of topics currently under investigation in the basic science literature. The expert will find this book especially useful in its nuts-and-bolts approach, which translates topics from literature to scanner well. This book is less appropriate for physicians in that it does not present information relevant to today's clinical practice. This book was an invaluable reference throughout my PhD training. Because small-animal and vertical bore magnets frequently have less user-friendly instrumentation and packaged support programming than clinical scanners, a more hands-on understanding of basic in vivo MR and all its components is frequently required. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great MRI Book
I tried the green book but found it didn't cover the pulse sequence development to a depth that was acceptable to me.This books covers pulses in such a way that it's invaluable if you're developing or rewriting any MR sequences.
5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of MRI pulse sequences is the best handbook I had ever used
I got to know this good handbook from an international conference. It was sold out in few days during the exhibition period. I strongly recommend every MRI guy own at least one copy of it. ^__^ ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars covers a lot, sometimes awkwardly
Many topics in image enhancement, analysis, compression and description. The algorithms are usually 1 page or less of C code.
3-0 out of 5 stars a decent book
This book gives a good summary of theory as well as algorithm (in C code written to illustrate the algorithm rather than optimal performance). If you are looking for a high-level book that throughly explains theory then this is not the one. If you want theory and some example code then this is a good buy. The bibliography at the end of each chapter gives great pointers of where to go for more detailed theory. I would recommend this to students in image processing or professionals who have to acquire image processing skills.
