Great book on practical holography
Saxby's book is a must have for everyone involved in holography and is worth the high price. I have read several books on holography and this book is by far the best resource on practical holography.
Message from Author
Further update on Practical Holography. Pearson Education, who now own Prentice-Hall, have sold the last copy , but - good news - they will reprint single copies to individual order, until the next edition comes out. I am now working on a third edition, to be published by Institute of Physics Publishing towards the end of 2002. Agfa materials are no longer available, but BB and Slavich emulsions work well with all the formulas in the 2nd Edn.

Modern, Straight Forward and Useful Optics Book
I've been designing diffractive elements for about two years. I first started knowing almost nothing about DOEs (except that they worked on diffraction). Even after two years, and a couple of successful designs, I was still in the dark on some of the methods used in designing DOEs.Read more

Good first book on holography
This book is intended as an introduction to the subject for science and engineering students as well as people with a scientific background who would like to learn more about holography and its applications. A comprehensive bibliography and references to original papers identify sources of additional information.Numerical problems and their solutions are provided at the end of each chapter to clarify the principles discussed and give the reader a feel for the numerical aspects of each topic.

An advanced book on holography techniques and research
Holography is an advanced form of photography that allows an image to be recorded in three dimensions. The difference between holography and photography is best understood by considering what a black and white photograph actually is: it is a point-to-point recording of the intensity of light rays that make up an image. Each point on the photograph records just one thing, the intensity of the light wave that illuminates that particular point. However, the light which makes up a real scene is not only specified by its amplitude and wavelength, but also by its phase. In a photograph, the phase of the light from the original scene is lost. In a hologram, both the amplitude and the phase of the light (usually at one particular wavelength) are recorded. When reconstructed, the resulting light field is identical to that which emanated from the original scene, giving a perfect three-dimensional image. This book is an advanced one on the mathematics of holographic techniques and current research. If anything I just said in this first paragraph is news to you, chances are this book will be over your head.

draws together U.S. history and environmentalism
This short book showed me a great deal about both U.S. history and environmentalism. The extensive notes and huge bibliography mark the book not just as inviting severe academic scrutiny but as a pithy summary of a lifetime of information. If my library was as large as this bibliography, I'd feel obligated to open it to the public. Read more

A complete, in-depth book and CD-ROM technical manual
Holograms & Holography: Design, Techniques, & Commercial Applications is a complete, in-depth book and CD-ROM technical manual for the combination of physics and optics that allows the creating of a beautiful, shiny, three-dimensional image on a two-dimensional surface. From the myriad uses of hologram technology to the economic value of holograms and how to create them with a computer, Holograms & Holography Design is more than a straightforward instruction book - it also has helpful instructions for how to best put holograms to commercial and practical use. The text is "intermediate to advanced" level; while it covers some very complex and technical subjects, it strives to do so in an explicitly clear manner, that anyone with a basic understanding of the physics involved can grasp. Diagrams, appendices, glossary, and an index complete the handy accessibility of this reference. The CD-ROM that comes with the book contains hologram-related images, animations, and web sites. In order to view the CD-ROM's files, a separate graphics program software such as Paint Shop Pro or Visio is required for the image files, and a separate movie player such as Quicktime, Windows Media Player, or Real Player Plug-in is required for the movies. Adobe Acrobat Reader and any web browser software (such as Netscape) are also useful for taking full advantage of the CD-ROM. Highly recommended!

This book is a misleading con
This book is inaccurate, out of date and misleading. It should never have been published, but as it has been the "author" and publisher should at least have had the grace to acknowledge the fact that much of the content has been copied wholesale from previously published papers and web sites. It won't help anyone to make or understand holograms - its science is confusing and wrong, its techniques are even more confusing and inadequate. This is by far the worst book on holograms in print
I believe this book does a great disservice to our industry bringing the worst "Internet ethics" into the realm of technical literature. It exploits the fact that there is a real need for a new book on this subject and cynically fails to deliver the goods, whilst disingenuously dressing up the package to make a quick sale. most of the text has simply been lifted from other sources (mostly the internet where one can read it for free) and is now several years out of date. The new reader would have no reason to suspect this, however, as in the author's "end notes" he cites his sources as being from the last couple of years. That might not matter, except that the world has moved on and it is now a little sad, to read chapters about building a studio for silver halide holography, as though we were in 1981 rather than 2001. It's like reading a typewriter manual, or a guidebook for Windows 3.1. - it's just not relevant anymore. ... Read more
