Extremely Verbose with Very Little Detail
Quick note: I am an experienced programmer, but fairly new to Ruby and the Rails framework. I have read all the other Ruby and Rails books available to date.
Great intro to ruby, ruby for rails from beginner to intermediate
chapter 13 - Ruby dynamics is worth the price by itself.
I don't quite like it
this maybe against the popular opinions, but the book is thick on author's philosophical thinkings (and the author is obviously fond of) on how various things are tied together, but thin on the actual things that you can do, and what to do. You have to wade through bunch of such mommy and apple pie stuff to get the point, which is a a pain. On the other hand, if you have plenty of time, and want to take it to savor the good of either ruby or rails or their interconnects, maybe it is the right book. ... Read more

A good introduction with antiquated economics
RAILROAD ENGINEERING is somewhat pricey for a simple update of a book originally published in the early 1950's.A good introduction to the engineering aspects of railroading but with grossly obsolete economics and operating concepts.This critic, a onetime trackman on the Erie Lackawanna (Local 1502 MOW Employees) and now licensed professional engineer, found the author's suggestion to hire vagrants as gandy dancers somewhat amusing. A Book for Grandma
I could not get through this book.After 150 pages, I granted myself a pardon and tossed this book into the "books for people with more time and less interests" pile.
A woman built the Brooklyn Bridge
While the Brooklyn Bridge is the oldest of the bridges crossing the East River, it's one of the strongest, sturdiest and will most likely outlast the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges. John Roebling and his son, Washington, did not know how the forces of nature and bridge loads would affect their bridge. Given this gap in their knowledge they overcompensated by building a bridge capable of withstanding forces many times greater than would ever be applied to their structure.

of course some people wouldn't like this book
i loved this book: it questions the idea of repeatability, which means that it questions the religion of science (as practiced by amateurs)and it shows you how language has served the impulse towards duplicity.the book also has a certain tongue-in-cheek wit about it, and that makes the ideas more interesting to read. Interesting, but hard to read
I'd like to think I'm not a dummy, but this was hard to read.It looks to me like the book was translated to English by someone who might know more about Anthropology than written communication.There were times when I felt that maybe it had been run through Babblefish. It only takes a French accent...
Anglophone readers probably don't realise that Latour meant this book as a tongue-in-cheek exercise to capture the postmodern social theory market in his own country by using a postmodern style to show what an illusionpostmodernism has always been. But, as fate would have it, when someonesneezes in Paris, an Anglophone is felled with pneumonia. It's hard tobelieve that anyone with a firm grasp of the history of the last 250 yearsof Western culture would find this book anything more than a diversionworthy of maybe a couple of arguments in the pub. It's telling thathistorians of science, who are really the people who are in a position tohold Latour accountable to anything he says here, have given the book achilly reception. State of the art transportation planning text
Urban Transportation Planning is well written and well organized. Complicated modeling techniques are explained in detail. The process flow charts and bubble graphs simplify complex relationships between transportation, land use, planning and politics. Correction for earlier posted review
My review of "Traffic and Highway Engineering" posted March 31, 2003 was mistakenly attached to this Newer "Revised" Edition of the text.The original review, for an earlier version-ISBN: 0534387438, was left while I was an undergraduate student of West Virginia University's Civil Engineering program.
Very comprehensive and well written
As the transportation professor at West Virginia University, I take issue with the review from Braxton Lewis (one of my former students).This book does not have errors and we have been using it at West Virginia University for 12 years and will continue to do so.
Errors up the Yin Yang!

Trains Across the Continent: North American Railroad History
This is an excellent depiction of American railroading. The addition of some U.S. History makes this superbly interesting. The Master's Masterpiece
John Armstrong is one of the best known names to the model railroad hobby. He has written extensively but this book is his finest work.
Covers the Basics and Some Langaippe, too,
I don't think anyone in the model railroad hobby can say enough about the contributions of the late John Armstrong.His layout designs are masterpieces of getting the most out of a given space and working with the tradeoffs we all enevitably face.The book gives an overview of prototype operations and then goes into countless ideas and pointers for design and operation.I found the section on curve planning (p. 76), schematics (Chap. 8), and laying out an "easement" (p. 116) particularly useful.I recommend this to anyone planning a forst layout or for anyone building a second layout after messing up their first.It is a good companion to "Classic Layout Designs," also by John Armstrong.

Get a clear picture
Prior to reading this book, I had visions of grandeur. I envisioned cars rolling in, dirt being washed away, and my bank account growing exponentially. After reading this book, I know these things can still happen but they require much more work than I expected. This book is very helpful in informing you about what is required of you to open a car wash. Then you can make a better evaluation before you jump into something and regret it.

I don't know what is up with the Entrepreneur-magazine series of books, but I've read several of them now and I've yet to be impressed with any of them. A Thought of Trains

A Masterpiece of English Literature
Ok, it's not a masterpiece of English literature.What is there to analyze here?This is like arguing the merits of Benny Hill.For 8 bucks, buy this book.It has a few practical tips about where and how to deficate in the woods (hence the title).Great.The introduction is a tears-in-your-eyes funny anecdote on that topic that is probably worth the price.Then, you have a conversation piece for your bookshelf that will be appreciated by almost everyone.And, the author goes to some length to argue that this title is NOT vulgar (the book includes a useful lexicon for the word that is also worth the price).And, you'll have something to think about the next time you take a hurried necessary behind a tree or abandon a diaper in the Wal-Mart parking lot!Enough analysis already.

Finally ... a great help for the novice woodsman
Few experiences do more to mar the outdoorsy afternoon or the 8 day backpack trek than stepping over a log and discovering your expensive waffle-stompers are filled with the leavings of another hiker.The problem is as old as mankind.At least, it's as old as mankind after he began noticing what was between his toes.

Super history of the nation's most beautiful highway!
If you were ever interested in finding out more about how highways were built before the Interstate system, this is the book for you!The Merritt Parkway and its extension the Wilber Cross Parkway remain marvelous designs to this day and are still enjoyable to travel on during every season.If you are from Connecticut or nearby New York, this book offers a wonderful historically perspective.The photographs are large and clear and the pages of the book are a good weight.In addition to being a good read, this book promoted a lot of family converstion about the history of the road.My great-Grandfather, for example,was the first person to ever drive over the Sikorsky Bridge built to connect the Merritt Parkway to the Boston Post Road in Milford, CT.This made the book seem all the more personal to me knowing that my family had played a part in Connecticut's history.Read more
