5-0 out of 5 stars very good all-around reference
I primarily work as a structural-architectural engineer and am becoming more and more involved in civil-site work. This handbook is exactly what I was looking for in terms of something that would quickly get me "up to speed" in the fundamentals of civil-site design.1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to follow!
I am in a class at Community College of Baltimore Countyand we are using this book at this time. Our whole class along with the Professor find this book to be very difficult to follow. The book constantly repeats itself making it extremely boring to read and is not fluent at all. They have examples that reference charts that are 3-5 pages apart from the problem being discussed the formulas you almost have to figure out for yourself how they are used and there are alot of typos.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Pub
Ever since I purchased this publication I can't stop using it.Every civil engineer should have this as part of their reference library, regardless of your area of specialty. It providesmacro to micro scale explanations of general processes, design applications, etc in a very readable format.More times than I can remember I have looked to this book for an answer or at least for some guidance and was throuroughly satisfied. No it is not a definitive reference for civil engineers but its' breadth and usability overshadows any technical shortcomings. If I had to have just one reference book for my area of practice (general civil), this would be it.Yeah, yeah, the "Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers" is a more definitive reference, but I usually find out what I need in this pub.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Packed with Information, Riddled with Typos and Omissions
I have been using this text in a wastewater engineering course. It covers the different aspects of wastewater engineering well, providing in depth treatments of each. However, the great size of this book (over 1800 pages) may also be its weakness, making it an unmanageable project for the editors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bible of Wastewater Engineering
This is the bible of Wastewater Engineering.I'm currently a student studying Civil/Environmental Engineering and every professor I've talked to in my department has recommended this book for any type of Wastewater Treatment Plant design. If this book doesn't have the information you want (unlikely), the WEF MOP might.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE FOR ALL SANITARY ENGINEERS
I can't stress enough the value in this text.Like my title states this is a must have for all sanitary engineers. The book covers everything you must know concerning wastewater treatment written by professionals working in the field.I would hope some day that they publish a book on pump stations and sanitary sewer design as well.I think that they would also be on the top of the list for these areas as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Surveyor's Bible
While preparing for my licensing exam, I read this book from cover to cover. It addresses every principle of retracement (sequential and simultaneous conveyances), public lands, and riparian issues thoroughly. The highlighted "principle" at the heading of each new topic makes remembering the main points simple. I can honestly say that every question on the NCEES exam that dealt with general principles and practice was answered in this book. I passed on my first sitting, and this book was one of the main reasons why. If you can only study one reference, this is it. Every practicing surveyor should also refer to it regularly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boundary Control and Legal Principals
This is the definitive work on boundary control. Technicians preparing for the SIT and PLS tests should own this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
This book is full of errors. The publisher will do great service to the engineering profession (to humanity by extension) by immediately withdrawing this book from the market. Unorganized, incoherent, almost schizophrenic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for design
There are seven of us (structural engineer / bridge designer) have been using this book successfully for our daily bridge design.2-0 out of 5 stars Very Badly Written
Like all of Professor Nawy's books, this one is extremely badly written. There are numerous typos and mistakes, although some are kind of entertaining. The Reinforced Concrete Book for example discusses the "modulus of rapture" of concrete. The chapter on Unbonded Post-tensioning in the Concrete Construction book discusses "prostrating tendons".Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Go-To Reference for 30 years
I began using Design in 1968 when I was in the USAF as a Civil Engineer. The wealth of information compiled by Mr. Seelye is staggering.Even though some of the materials are archaic, the formulae are timeless.I find the tables and nomographs particularly useful for quickly checking the work of my consultants.I've found it useful and I'm sure any Civil Engineer will as well.It would make a great graduation gift for your favorite CE.Computers will need upgrading but this book won't.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book for practical engineering
I bought Seelye's book on design in 1971.I am sure that it has gone through some updates since, but for the last three decades it has been a ready source of quick usefull and practical engineering data.Granted, an in depth design problem will require other references and checks of current codes, but there is plenty in Seelye's book to find a direction and to solve "shirtsleeve" problems.4-0 out of 5 stars Broad range of detail and hard to find info, with calc's.
This is a collection of years of work detailed by a civil engineer dealing with many types of materials and projects. His formulas and charts are well documented with an excellent index. Great for structural and generalcivil engineering type of work. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Way too many errata for a recommendation
I have been using this book for six months in two different courses, and have nearly completed it.
1-0 out of 5 stars how to survive the use of this book
this book is terrible! There are very few helpful illustrations, some simply don't exist ie in the defining of angles and their relationships!for some problems/projects that are fairly involved, several completely different data sets are used, so if you were confused about something on one step you cannot derive understanding from the completion of the problem. So, you are forced to rely on the horrible text written partially in crat -things are explained in the longest possible way!The author and our instructor use different terms, it is awful.5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Surveying
Simply the best surveying text. The best feature is the way it introduces the basic concepts of a topic followed by a section of advanced concepts concerning the topic. This makes the book an essential reference for both students and practioners. This book is highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Text For Environmental Design Management ! Flawless!
I live, study and work in the New York Tri-State region and this book is pretty great because the author also lived, worked and studied in the same region. Whats good about that? The Human Development and Expliotation is our region is very diverse and often connects directly with other prominent regions around the globe. The author basically covers alot of legalities, origins, design principles, and field work analysis really well.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREATEST ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING BOOK
GREAT!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars 94 S: Excellent Resource, Environmental Health professionals
I have just reviewed the ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND SANITATION 1994SUPPLEMENT, by Joseph A. Salvato and Joe E. Beck. It's a great resourcefor professionals seeking a broader vision of environmental health practiceareas and where we are heading.Prof. Beck obviously put a lot of workinto conceptualizing this volume and working with the distinguishedcontributors. It shows. In particular, I found the first chapter,Stakeholder Focused Interactive Planning (SFIP)by Joe Beck and Steven Isonto be a brilliant piece on the desirability of (indeed, the imperative forour profession to) include the public in problem-solving and planning.Ihave used this process and mediated disputes ranging from sitingcontroversies (haz. waste facility siting in Massachusetts) to determiningfuture land use options at Hanford in the nuclear weapons complex.Icommend both Beck and Ison for their clear portrayal of the paradigm aswell as the steps one undertakes in conducting such planning.Federalgovernment engineers and planners have been learning the hard way aboutwhat happens when decisions are made without public input and withoutregard to the values, interests, and expectations of so-calledstakeholders.At Hanford, more than $20 billion in appropriations hasyielded preciously little in terms of actual cleanup:one may wonder ifCongress will continue to appropriate the substantial $6 billion a year forthe Dept. of Energy's Environmental Management Program without consensus ofthe public on #1) the benefits or #2) the ameliorated risks from presentexpenditures.Current stakeholders come from a wide range of publicinterest groups and they do not get along particularly well. They do nothave current programs or projects that reflect the use of the SFIP andresearchers should be asking themselves, "Why not?" (Resourcesfor the Future [RFF] has an on-going research project that tackles publicparticipation in environmental decision making).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for those less worried about theory
This book came in very handy as a compliment to Meriam's contribution (5th edition). For those of us less technically-minded, yet required to take courses such as engineering dynamics, this book left the theory and procedural derivations to another day so that at first by practice may understanding come about. When I couldn't quite comprehend what Meriam's book said, I found my answer in this book. There are better (ahem, simpler) explanations of not only the ideas but the math as well, a major help to someone increasingly out of practice, however the appendices are weak so don't look to them for much review.Answers to odd-numbered problems are provided.Note: This book doesn't make the learning easy, it just softens the blow sufficiently. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a really good book on a subject that can be boring
Because of work, I have had to read a lot of books on this topic... most of them are dry-textbook reads that you have to slog through. This one was well written - the text was easy to read - the diagrams and examples were interesting, and I found myself gaining new insights because I was actually reading the text instead of skimming it. Mr. Gryna clearly has the years of experience needed to write this kind of book, but he also has the teaching style of one of your favorite teachers.

Super fast shipping. I will always order from the seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of knowledge
If you want to learn the most common surveying situations you may face out there, this is the book you need to read. Written with a high level of professionalism, the book covers a wide range of topics. I've just finished a course on surveying and definitely it helped me a lot. You will enjoy it if you are a math lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do well on these questions and you will pass your FLS!!!
I used this book almost exclusively in studying for the FLS exam in October of 2003 and ultimately passing it. I felt like the questions in here prepared me really well, in fact, the majority of them were more difficult than the ones on the test! The only things that I can think of that it didn't delve into were computer, spelling, and grammar questions which were on the exam, but you only have to get a 70% on it, not 100%!! After all this is a SURVEYING book.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Airport planner and engineer's viewpoint - updated
The best of its kind for the technical detail. We have most of the other airport and terminal design books on the bookshelf (up to 2005 publication date), but every time we come back to using Horonjeff for the serious design ofnew airports and extensions. It is also good for layout design by theengineer for terminals - although the architects may want more books. But there is another book - the 2003 book titled Airport Systems - Planning, Design and Management by Richard de Neufville and Amedeo Odoni - that will become the definitive text on airport design for the first part of the 21st century. So you'll need both, especially if you have to deal with the complexity of systems and stakeholders that are part of medium to large size airports.

5-0 out of 5 stars The GPS Primer - updated
I found Mr. Van Sickle's 2nd edition book to be an expansion, correction and update of the 1st edition (previously reviewed). The book now has nine chapters and includes a new one on "real-time".Various corrections and updates have been placed into print which were greatly needed. The book "boils down" GPS into its basic components and explains difficult aspects in a more understandable fashion. The new, larger illustrations are generally more easier to see and of a better quality than before.Mr. Van Sickle has added questions and answers at the end of each chapter making the book more useful in the classroom. Generally, I liked the new book and would recommend it as a basic part of your GPS/Surveying library. I intend to use the book as a textbook for my upcoming semester and I know that the students will like it as much as I have, especially with the new self-checking questions and answers at the end of each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to an interesting topic

2-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing AutoCad LDD
I did not care for the book. I did not feel it was written very well. It does not "read" well and is difficult to understand and follow the examples. I suppose, it is better than nothing and I keep it around as a reference only. Also, hardly and time is spent on the survey module only 1 example is given on runnning traverses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fully Comprehensive and an excellent reference.
I have more than five years using third party Acad applications for land development and I found this material systematic, well organized and easy to follow. The examples provided ( CD included) are sequential to the lectures which makes it an excellent didactic tool.On the other hand, the text does not cover the possible, or most common, types of reports that can be generated with the program in its differents applications.3-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing Autodesk LDDT2i
The overall organization is quite good..., however, if you have been using LDD for a while and have accessed the online help to learn the program, you may find much similarity in syntax. If you are new to using LDD, then it is worth the price of the book. Keep in mind though, if you need to pick up the overall working mechanism of this LDD software and civil design in general in a rather short period of time, you best bet may be going to an authorized learning center.(No, I don't work for anyone of them.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tour de Force: Earth Moving at its Finest
Ranks right up there with Handling the Big Jets, get behind the wheel of an earth grader or dumptruck. Moving great masses of the earth is a singularly human occupation. This book will put you there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic refernce
I ordered the latest edition of this book for my husband, who had spent hours studying the previous one. Whether you're operating a dozer or an excavator, or even a Bobcat; transplanting trees, landscaping, making stock ponds or building roads... this is a valuable reference.

Just a word to Amazon....[com] as an entity, thanks guys/gals, very much! To the rest of you...I ordered this book on a holiday, to be delivered the cheapest method possible (I was in no rush, I had a copy available at work but wanted one for myself). It was sent that day and I received it 8 days later! I certainally do not expect that to be the case with every order, nevertheless, I will be looking to order any future items thru Amazon.[com] As to the book...if you work in the dirt, around, on, or in Machinery and want one book that tells you how it really is (speakin' in :) down to earth talk) and covers it all...you're lookin' at it. ...
