2-0 out of 5 stars The roofing book for those who have never been on a roof
This is an informative book that would be acceptable material for the person who has never been on a roof.He covers most roofing products in a adaquate manner explaining many of the basic princibles. However, as aroofer, it would have been nice to see what he considers acceptablemanhours per square on each product, using his experiance, instead of usinginformation drawn from other books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Roof Framing by Marshall Gross
I probably have 6 books on the steel square from as far back as 1904.They are wonderful examples of just how ingenious workman were at that time. They relied on the steel square for all of their framing problems.Mr. Gross adds his modern day interpretation using the calculator and the result is a very good treatise on framing from an expert. Each new chapter builds on the last and he encourages the reader to build models as your skills progress.Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for Your Construction Library....
I rated this book at 5. It clearly explains the mathematical operations needed to configure various roof types. The Texas Instruments Calculator TI-35 used by the author to walk you through the steps,I acquired via Ebay for $7.50.The TI-35 is no longer manufactured. But Office Depot carries the new Texas Instruments BA-II which also has the necessary function keys for about $32.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tough to get through
I'm 125+ pages into the this book ... I agree Mr. Gross certainly knows his stuff, however this is one of the most difficult books I've ever read on ANY subject. On the plus side there are nice illustrations.Generally speaking the material roughly builds progressively.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Slate Roof Bible
This is an excellent book that anyone who owns a house with a slate roof needs to purchase to understand their roof. While you may have no plan on ever going up their yourself to repair a leak, educating yourself against the lies today's roofing contractors will try to sell you is priceless.
5-0 out of 5 stars 2005 Writers Notes Book Award Winner
It's difficult to picture a reference book as literature, but Jenkins climbs that peak in The Slate Roof Bible. It's that rare combination of fact and experience that creates learning and appreciation. With beautiful pictures and sweeping detail, Jenkins' covers the height and pitch, the manufacturing and maintenance, and even the history of slate roofs. I'm not certain that you'd know this much about `the worlds finest roof' if you had one over your head, even if you fixed them for a living, but this book is more than information. It's a love story, and Jenkins travels the world to deliver the variety and nuance of the stone that affords shelter for countless generations. The heat rises. Bats cut loose. Angry bees buzz past. It's all in a day's work, as slaters anxiously attempt to match tiles, all the while pondering the mystery and genesis of the stone itself. Perhaps it isn't romantic for people who mine, cut, haul, and work slate for a living, but reading The Slate Roof Bible, you start to believe it is.

1-0 out of 5 stars no basics
Many of the chapters in this book are written by individual carpenters who "do things their own way". For instance, in the first chapter, the writer says to disregard previous techniques and use his method. In the 2nd and 3rd chapters, the writer talks about using power tools that are either outrageously expensive or not even avilable any more. Further, there is no discussion or summary of basic roof geometry and calculations. The tag phrase "for pros by pros" is quite misleading. It is merely 15 chapters of guys telling how THEY frame a roof. Anyone, even pro carpenters using this as a refresher, should start off with a tutorial on basic roof geometry, design, and construction methods. If you are looking for info on how to properly design and construct roof framing, don't waste your money on this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for stick roofs
In recent years, the roof has become the focal point of many NA homes. No longer content with simple styles, rangy, monstrous roofs are the norm.Additionally many of them are likely to be built with either trusses, or maybe manufactured wood sticks. These techniques shave dollars right into the developers pockets. And frankly have become the norm in the last 5 to 10 years. They aren't much covered in this book.2-0 out of 5 stars where's the info
The rafter jig idea was great, but there just wasn't enough info and detail to actually build it (I thought).I must admit, I'am not a pro as this book "by pros for pros" claims, but I guess if I was a pro, then I would probably find the information in this book to be too elementary. This book is ok for learning roof basics, but it's not enough info and detail to fully learn all that's involved with building roofs. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Expensive Book With Old Information
Much of the information presented is factually correct, but incomplete or based on old information.Single Ply section, for instance, lacks information about the most common membranes in use today and incorrectly identifies declining technology as current up to date technology.Lack of quality drawings or pictures makes this volume uninteresting. Many other books present up to date information in an easier format. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!!!
I have been involved in the Slate Roofing industry for 14 years. Before this publication was available, each slate company had their own installation manuals, but none were written from the perspective of the applicator or the specifier. This left a tremendous void in the industry.1-0 out of 5 stars Written by bone heads
I have worked with the author of this book on a slate roof. His work is poor and I think he has no buisness trying to come off as some kind of expert. Belive me he's not. John Cook Oak Sheet Metal, Inc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for metal roofing
I just bought a 5 year old house that has a common metal roof with overlapping panels. Some were not installed properly so I went looking for more information. This book has a chapter on metal roofing, but it is like an afterthought and doesn't delve into the various types. Except for the standing seam type, there is no detail on the joining of common metal roofing in use today. Why the author devotes 6 pages to thatched roofing and only 5 to metal roofing befuddles me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do-it-yourselfer from Massachusetts
This book is actually a collection of articles from Fine Homebuilding magazine. It is not a complete do-it-yourself guide, but an excellent compliment to other reference guides and how-to books. The photograhy isabsolutely top notch, and virtually every page has multiple pictures. While the book includes some rather obscure subjects such as roofing withsod and thatching, there are several articles which I consider essentialreading for anyone contemplating their first roofing job. Some of the bestinclude "Tearing Off Old Roofing" and "Roofing with AsphaltShingles".These articles, as with most of them, contain valuabletips and techniques from experienced craftsmen.Read more

The book was easy to understand and had very helpful illustrations. It did not cover some recent roofing materials, such as 'dimensional' shingles and 'ice guard' eave protection, but using this guide alone, you have all the information you need to roof your first house (it worked for me).P.S. Don't roof it by yourself; you will save a lot of time with a good helper.
