Best introductory book to GIS
I am taking a class on GIS applications in public health and this book has been extremely helpful. It is simple, easy to follow, and the step-by-step exercises are the best.

Very good book for begineers
I was starting with Arc products and this book was a very good start.

Excellent Resource and teaching manual
I purchased this book to be able to create my own maps for a client.I was familiar with ArcGIS Desktop 8.3, but had never really created any GIS data.Using this book, I was able to create custom shape files, MXDs and layer files that really impressed the client.The author assumes little or no previous knowledge of using the product and does an outstanding job putting the information in the simplest of terms.Unlike the books that come with the software, this one will actually have you creating GIS data in no time flat.Well worth the money. ... The GPS Primer - updated
I found Mr. Van Sickle's 2nd edition book to be an expansion, correction and update of the 1st edition (previously reviewed).The book now has nine chapters and includes a new one on "real-time".Various corrections and updates have been placed into print which were greatly needed.The book "boils down" GPS into its basic components and explains difficult aspects in a more understandable fashion.The new, larger illustrations are generally more easier to see and of a better quality than before.Mr. Van Sickle has added questions and answers at the end of each chapter making the book more useful in the classroom. Generally, I liked the new book and would recommend it as a basic part of your GPS/Surveying library. I intend to use the book as a textbook for my upcoming semester and I know that the students will like it as much as I have, especially with the new self-checking questions and answers at the end of each chapter.

An excellent guide to an interesting topic

Not enough content to warrant the high price
This updated edition of the digital image processing text geared towards satellite-derived remotely sensed data has some good content, but like previous editions it is much too expensive for what you ultimately receive. For general digital image processing and its algorithms I really think that "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods provides much more quality for a lower price. Granted, this book has some GIS specific information in it that other books don't have, but I don't think that this warrants the huge price tag. The presentation is not particularly compelling either. Quite a bit of room is taken up with large tables and sample imagery rather than instruction and algorithm details. I would really suggest that someone interested in the specific problems of processing satellite imagery look at some of the online resources for the pre-processing issues unique to this field, and then look at the Gonzalez and Woods book for a much better explanation of digital image processing in general, including the pattern recognition issues of the later chapters of this book that I think are particularly poorly explained. Excellent Resource
This book is an excellent resource and covers all topics in a sufficient and easy to read manner and definitely covers all the "elements".Anyone that is interested in Photogrammetry will find this book quite useful.

Book Review: Elements of Phtogrammetry
This book is substantially revised from the previous edition in 1983, some 17 years ago. Consequently, new topics are added, particularly on GIS and digital photogrammetry. The appendixes on least squares adjustment, co-ordinate transformations, collinearity equations and digital resampling are particularly useful.Read more

Complete, careful, well written.
After having used a half dozen books on the topic of synthetic aperture radar signal processing, this is the best. The authors are very careful with their explanations and derivations, and keep their discussions within the subject context. Other books don't do this, and the details of SAR processing can become confusing to the novice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in SAR, despite the very high price tag.

Absolutly One of the BEST!!
This book is one of the best on the market on Image Interpretation. After taking a class and the instructor had a different book (which was poorly written book) I bought this book. I found it interesting and easy to use, any math was explained step by step! I cant wait to get the 5th edition! This is a must for any person who is interested in this topic or is working in the field.

One of the best books in RS
One of the best text books in Remote Sensing: comprehensive, complete. I have the 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions. Will wait to the 4th edition in paperback.

A good technical overview of RS
The text is a comprehensive introduction to RS that covers the science from physical basis to sensors and applications.It is not a HOW-TO-DO-IT book as opposed to a complete textbooks for students in this area who need good background of the science and its application. nice alternative
As GIS continues to grow in many usages, it was inevitable that someone [actually a bunch of blokes] would consider an open source GIS package. The book describes one, GRASS; and specifically version 5.3. It offers many visualisation conveniences of the prioprietary packages. Very easy and intuitive usages.

a real gem
This book should be required reading for anyone who is allowed to make maps with a GIS. It's actually a pretty quick read (3-4 hours for me) thanks to its concise and tightly organized text set in context of some very clean and simple graphics. There is even a healthy dash of humor (so welcome in technical writing), genuinely funny but always in service of the text.
Why make maps
What makes this book exception is not its clear design and simple text. It's a book about making maps, after all. One would hope the design was adequate. What distinguishes this book from its competition is that, implicitly if not always explicitly, it is about using maps, the arguments maps make. From the first page, a First Nation historical map, the argument is clear: Maps make arguments and making maps is about the best way to make arguments.
Simple and Effective
While I do a lot of GIS work and never took a cartography course when I started my career in geography research work. After searching through the local geography dept library, and searching the university bookstore for something simple, practical, and effective, I have to say "Making Maps" works great.

Two new chapters:
Best overall coverage of the topic I've found
This text found its way into my collection during my undergraduate career as required for a Geography course in remote sensing. I ejoyed it as an introduction to the topic but later found myself returning to it time and again in graduate school working on a remote sensing thesis.I keep on finding new reasons to open it up in my business, at Terra Prints.It's exhaustive while not exhausting. Worth buying.

This book covers broad area of remote sensing; nature, physics, photogrametry, history, various types of sensors (multispectral, thermal, Microwabe..), earth resource perspective(vegetation, water, urban landscape, soil&mineral...).
