Editorial Review

In a new take on sustainable living and building, John Taylor presents a stunning array of traditional building techniques and housing solutions from around the world and from history. Most are motivated by available materials, economic necessity, and local climate and terrain. In this time of growing interest in earth-friendly building techniques, Taylor shows us that we need to relearn many practical aspects of constructing shelter and must blend the technologies of the present with the traditions of the past, with those of other cultures, and even with those of our own grandparents. Taylor, an architectural designer, has filled this delightful book with remarkable drawings and sketches of building techniques gleaned from his travels; it is a feast for the eyes as well as the brain. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A little bit of every other book.
This book seems to have sketches of just about everything to do with Shelter. I have seen most of these pictures in full colour 5-0 out of 5 stars Ideas and ideas that have worked
The book was recommended to me as a sourse for a shade problem I have with my house.I live on the West Coast in California's Central Valley. Our house is in the middle of a large pasture. We have NO shade. The trees we have planted will not have any shade value for many years. The West side of the house bakes in the summer. What I wanted was a solution to my problem. An aesthetic design and technical information on shading our house with structures, vegetative, and orfabric (pictures, line drawing, Etc.4-0 out of 5 stars A Shelter Sketchbook
I came across this book while assembling reference material for planning a treehouse at the cottage. While most of the books I was looking at were hands-on/how-to type, I found this book interesting, and there are a few ideas in the book I can definitely use.At first glance, the book has, asthe title implies, just a bunch of sketches - each page has four or fivearchitectual details and hand-written notes explaining or referencing thedrawing.Despite the rough-draft appearance, though, there is a lot oforganizing of the 600+ drawings, and they obviously draw on a wealth ofstructure details.Examples range from villas in ancient Greece, Japanesehouses, African huts, Aztec dwellings, to the current UNESCO headquartersin Paris and modern Frank Lloyd Wright homes. The book is arranged inthree sections: protection (from sun, wind, cold, water); accomodatinghuman needs (sleeping, cooking, eating, sitting, etc.); and structuralelements themselves (roofs, doors, windows). Each section draws onexamples from all parts of the world, and much of history, to show how, inmany cases, simple solutions from 'simple' people, and even animals, solvebasic living problems, and I found it quite interesting how differentcultures at different times came up with similar solutions to such thingsas drainage, ventilation, etc.I found the ideas in this book useful formy treehouse project because I wanted simple construction, low cost, andflexibility, and the concepts in the book, being drawn as they were frombasic construction principles, quite practical. This book wouldlikely be of interest to several groups of readers: those studyingarchitecture (there is an extensive bibliography), those building ordesigning energy-efficient homes (it is somewhat humbling to see so manyconcepts that we may think are new and radical, that natives somewhere havebeen doing for centuries!), or just for general interest (the book explainssuch things as roof angles on saltbox houses, cupolas, etc.) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not necessarily great
I enjoyed the original E-Myth very much, though it was painful too as I recognised all my own mistakes in business over the years. I found this particular volume just a tad too new-age in places for my own liking. It is also, like so many small (the book, that is) business-help books, a little on the glib side, making the issues out to be rather easy to solve whereas entrepreneurship is somewhat more challenging in reality, and not quite as formulaic as the author might have us believe. But there's still a lot of truth in it too, and it is easily read, with some good lessons to take from it. Certainly worth both the purchase price and the time it takes to read.

I believe this is the book that fills in the gap between
1-0 out of 5 stars Relies on outdated Windows NT 4
I am truly mystified as to the reason why a book published for teaching networking to beginners in 2003 would use Windows NT 4 Server as thenetwork operating software and where Win 2000 and Win XP are mentioned only in passing and relegated mostly to the book's incomplete website (which I had to find through a search engine since the publisher's website for this book does not even make reference to the book's website). So forget about using the trial editions of Windows 2000 or 2003 Server (the latter can be downloaded freely from MS) that comes with most of Microsoft's MCSE books (and some other publishers) available from Amazon.Put off buying this book until the author updates (in a 2nd edition, perhaps) to using the latest software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plain & Simple but VERY POWERFUL
This book provides a great base knowledge, in the practical understanding of TCP/IP structure. It quickly builds on basic IP addressing concepts, and ties in Subnets, and DNS information very, very well.Thank you for a GREAT book and lifetime reference. One of the books core points that 90 to 95% of networking issues are caused by IP problems, will allow you to solve many of your issues, through focusing on this book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Smith, Currie & Hancock's LLP Common Sense Construction Law
A great introduction to Construction Law for any aspiring Project Manager or Construction Professional.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview, but lacks some depth in places
This book was used as the text for a Construction Law case I took in law school.Overall I found the book to be very good.It was clear, concise, well written, and easy to understand. It also brought a pretty wide range of topics into the mix, and provided a fair amount of places to go for additional information (by way of case law).If I had to complain, and for the purposes of this review I will, I would make two comments: 1) There are areas where a little more depth would be nice.Frankly, I don't think the scope of this book really includes in-depth analysis on anything so this might be a non-issue for many folks.I just found that there were a few times (a very few) when I was looking for more information.2. This book does a really nice job incorporating definitions for new terms into the text. However, there are a LOT of new terms and a glossary would have beeen a nice addition to the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smith, Currie & Hancock LLP's Common Sense Construction Law
